The Last Refuge

Rate this book
James Muller is a relic - and a danger to the state.

For he was once a writer. And people remember...

Even people drugged by the calculated sensualities that keep the peace in despotic, post-H-bomb Britain... the naked, state-employed streetwalkers, the bugged bedrooms, the subtly staged depravities...

And because he is a danger, he is given the most terrible punishment the new scientific society can impose - freedom.

Post-nuclear war, dystopian society. (like Orwell 1984...) The protagonist wants freedom of thought... or a return to a happier life...

Strange book. You cannot help cheering for the hero, but deep down you know that the bad guys are trying to keep humanity alive in a time of crisis, and he is not...

To save the world, we all need to sacrifice a little (or a lot) personal freedom. Probably more relevant today than in 1966...

Depressing...
