The Difficulty Machine

Rate this book
Right now, reading this book synopsis, you are making thousands of very small choices. Every single one of them affects all the people you know and don't. Standing here means you're not walking there. Reading this means you're not saying that. Here are fifteen stories, a city of people and millions of choices.

"There are no spiderwebs between us. We're a bundle of frayed threads...You're just another cog in the difficulty machine, my friend, and tonight we're turning together."

Topher South expertly weaves the lives of a rather large number of seemingly unrelated events together over the course of some 200+ pages.

At first, having not been briefed, the connections between one story and the next were lost to me. South made me work for my answer. He beckons you to keep reading, and rewards you as you hope he will...with nuances and poignant connections; and simple, sweet, sometimes hysterical anecdotes from chapter to chapter.

For his first book, it's quite an achievement. It leaves a lot open for interpretation, making it a different book for everyone, but also possesses within it a clear message (which I won't spoil here.)

If you come across this review and are intrigued by intertwining stories that are not "involved" closely, per se, but have more "parallel and inadvertent" closeness, go to his website and order a copy. Even the cover is something to decipher.

Enjoy!
