This was a quick easy read. The story is about the meeting and forming of a relationship between baseball player Nate Carter and Dr. Holly Bell. It was basically a good story but somtimes Holly's description of Nate was bit redundate. She was overwhelmed with how handsome he was and how great his body was to look at-it just was repetitive when the author used the same descriptive words. The author did a good job of giving the h/h a real life relationship struggle. There is even a little suspense action involved with one of Dr. Holly's patient. This part was predictable. Personally, I could have done without this whole scene/plot. I don't feel it really added to the story other than a way to wrap the story up.

Even though I enjoyed this book, I give it 3 stars for poor editing- the book was riddled with errors. There was enough to distract me from the story.

Review: I confess, I don't usually read just straight romance books; I prefer paranormal romance or romantic suspense. This book sounded like such a fun read I couldn't turn it down. Plus, it actually does end up having some suspense elements to it that I wasn't expecting! Also, did you SEE that book cover?! The only word that comes to mind is H-O-T!

1) Character Development: I was able to relate and connect with both of the main characters, Holly and Nate, but perhaps not as much as I would have liked. Nate was a really down-to-earth guy, despite the fact that he was a famous baseball player; not stuck up at all and not especially full of himself. Holly was a pedatric surgeon; I like that she was a successful, confident female lead. She was completely independent and obviously very smart. There were times she annoyed me with her insecurities when it came to Nate, but at the same time I could totally understand where she was coming from.

2) The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: First, The Good - I enjoyed the characters and seeing their relationship develop. The story overall was interesting; in addition to finding herself smitten with Nate, Holly also has to deal with the beligerant and menacing parent of a sick child she is caring for. That definitely adds a few tense moments, especially when she suspects that he doesn't have his son's best interests in mind. Also, the sex scenes were very steamy, but they didn't take up the whole book like sometimes happens with romances. The Bad - I felt like sometimes the dialogue (mostly on Holly's part) seemed a little awkward, where I found myself saying "Do people actually talk like that?" I also had trouble with the fact that the first few times Holly meets Nate she's really insecure and somewhat shy, as she was wondering why he wanted to spend time with her. Then on their first "date", she turns into kind of a sex kitten. It didn't really jive with how I expected Holly to act in that situation. The Ugly - I don't have anything horrible to say in this case, it was a good read.

3) Romance Sizzle Or Fizzle?: I would say sizzle. Holly and Nate definitely had a connection from the beginning and as I said before, it made for some extremely hot and steamy sex scenes. They were really good together, yet I felt like Holly moved way too fast in the relationship considering they hadn't been seeing each other very long. Maybe that's why I felt like I connected better with Nate in the long run. Overall though they made a cute couple and had some great chemistry.

4) Uniqueness Of Plot: I wouldn't say this book is especially unique; all of the elements were ones I've read before. It was still an enjoyable read though.

5) Final Thoughts: Overall, I didn't enjoy this book quite as much as I was hoping, but I chalk that up to the fact that I'm not really a big fan of this kind of romance. Regardless, I did like the book. If you like hot male baseball players, steamy romance, and some suspense then this book is perfect for you!

I was up until 4:45 am reading this amazing book between Doctor Holly Bell and Pat's Pitcher Nate Carter. You get a taste of him in Fastball and you can see how loyal he is. Nate is sweet and caring and can be stubborn. Holly Bell is a fantastic doctor and loves what she does, and she can be just as stubborn as Nate. I think the sex between Nate and Holly was just a little hotter than Jake and Maddie's. Jake and Maddie do make a few appearances in this book unfortunately it is not reviled in this book the sex of their baby. I really enjoyed the dialogue between Holly and Maddie. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I have to know what happens next!!

Contemporary romance with a baseball theme when the star pitcher falls for a selfless local children's doctor.
Dr. Holly Bell is a wonderful children's cardiac surgeon, but new to Philadelphia when she bumps into Nate Carter the famous pitcher who volunteers cheering up the sick children and he falls for the sexy Holly. So they start a relationship, but it is difficult because Nate has a terrible reputation with the ladies, but he does has nice friends so the relationship is developing but then there is a stalker and a possible trade to California for Nate.
HEA guaranteed, but some bumps and death threats.

I dislike clingy heroines especially coming from a beautiful and sucessful surgeon. You have everything going for you and you practically beg for marriage from a sports star who I must add is a womanizer. On top of it all she keeps whining and setting rules and conditions to him him. Babe, you are supposed to be intelligent, classy and different from his other ladies but you ended up just like them. The write up was okay but the heroines attitude just killed my vibes.

It was an ok romance. Nate was an ok hero who didn't really cave until Holly was in danger. Holly fell in love with him way before he reciprocated those feelings. Therefore at times it was frustrating seeing Nate debating if he was ready to commit and no longer be a man whore.

Good continuation. Didn't quite have the same chemistry as book 1, but overall good.

***Detailed Review***

HARDBALL is a quick and fast read that continues on the Philadelphia Patriots series. Featuring star pitcher, Nate Carter and pediatric surgeon, Dr. Holly Bell.

Holly is similar to Maddie from book one in the fact that she loves her career and doesn’t want to risk losing it if love isn’t the end result. As a pediatric surgeon, she’s passionate about staying focus on saving the lives of sick children and doesn’t want a relationship to derail her. She’s high class, but I’m glad that wasn’t the main focus between her and Nate.

Nate is an up and coming pitching star. He’s in early stages of talks of being traded to a prestigious team and is floating on air until he runs into Holly while visiting the children. He’s taken with her instantly, but knows she’s going to require a little convincing.

They do start a dating relationship and Nate takes her on some great dates that continue into the bedroom. Meanwhile Holly begins being threatened by an unruly dad over his sons pending surgery he doesn’t want to happen.

In addition, Nate takes an injury to his pitching arm that slightly strains their relationship as he struggles with being away from the game.

Nate is great through supporting her through the fiasco with the father. He even flies her personally down to Florida for a few days of relaxing. It goes great until Holly brings up wanting a commitment of monogamy on the way back.

Breaking up because Nate isn’t going to promise something he’s not sure he can stick too, these two are both put through their paces missing the other. Jake offers that perspective only a married man can give and tells Nate he needs to decide how he feels about Holly. Maddie makes fast friends with Holly, but isn’t able to get her to ease up on her demands.

Overall, it’s the angry father that gets these two back together as his threats escalates when Holly gets the court to overrule his wishes. While Nate’s gone to a mini game to test his shoulder, Holly is attacked by the father. Once Nate is pulled from the game due to his disastrous pitching, he rushes home to Holly with a bad feeling and just in time to save her.

Now, a commitment is all Nate wants as he’s never leaving her again.

Overall, an enjoyable read. This series is a great in between series for when a break is needed. I’m on to book three.

Yeah, where do I start??

Let me summarize real quick:
Plot: awesome (exciting, keeps you going, with twists - predictable ones, though)
Characters: meh (I just didn't like Holly...)
Writing style: good (there r a lot of descriptions of the surroundings... that was a bit boring at times)

So, let me start with the writing style.
Maybe I'm getting tired of this genre 'cause the first 17+ scene was just really boring to read for me. I don't know...

And don't get me started on Holly Bells.
I mean, gosh, she seemed to be so head-strong in the beginning, she's an awesome doctor, she loves the kids, she loves her job (I really liked the first 29% of this book) but then it went downhill pretty fast.
She was so self-conscious when she was intimate with Nate and that was soo annyoing. She totally embarrassed herself by babbling about her inexperience and I mean, god, you're a grown woman, get a grip, Doctor.

And that wasn't all. When Nate is watching a Patriots game and they lose, he is furious. Yeah, figures, right? What does Holly do? She acts like a scared puppy and he didn't even do anything!! Good god, woman, really? He has to be someone else when he's around her and that is not cool!! I mean, people are angry sometimes. I wanna be allowed to throw the pillow across the room and punch the couch. What's wrong about it?

Yeah, and then we've got the next problem. commitment. At least, when it comes to this, I was totally on her side. I was just really disappointed that it took her so long to talk about this. I mean, hello, he should have known in the first place that she isn't a woman you can screw around with and that is your toy whenever you come back home. How could Holly agree to this 'relationship' without being clear about the fact that she wants him to be faithful.

Yeah, but anyways, just some remarks :D

In the end, I did enjoy this book.

This was a really fun read. I really liked the use of suspense mixed in with sports. I also felt the depiction of Holly and Nate's relationship was pretty realistic. I hate instalove and I hate when the guy is possessive and overbearing, and there was none of that here. Nate was just a guy who really liked a girl and wanted to see where it went. He got understandably freaked when she became more invested than he was ready for and I felt that part of their struggle was portrayed in a very real way. Sometimes Holly was a bit over-the-top insecure. (Sorry, but if a patient's father is threatening me with violence and overall giving me the heebie jeebies, I would DEFINITELY tell my boss right away. That doesn't make you a wimp.) But overall, both she and Nate were likable and fun to read. My one big complaint is that I thought it was silly that, considering he was already not sleeping with anyone but Holly, he couldn't promise that he wouldn't do it while was with her. After a month of dating, I don't think it's unreasonable for a woman to ask a guy to only sleep with her.

One part really jarred me out of the story, though. The first time she sees Nate naked, she notes that he must have a great BMI because he has no flab. BMI doesn't take fat into account at all, it's a measure of weight to height. Given his size and muscle mass, he probably has a terrible BMI. A doctor should know that. Not sure if any of the other medical jargon was good or bad because I know nothing about surgery or cardiology, but that part distracted me.

Beyond that, the sex was steamy and fun. The writing was pretty good, easy to read, and light. Minimal editing errors. I'll definitely be checking out the rest of the series.

Holly Bell is a children’s surgeon and just started her new job in the hospital. She knows she shouldn’t get too involved in the private lives of her little patients, but when this little boy becomes her patient she cannot ignore the warming signs. Holly is also not ready of all the attention this gorgeous pitcher is giving her from the moment they meet.

Nate Carter is a star pitcher and has a highly reputation with the ladies. When he meets the new beautiful new children’s surgeon during his monthly visit to the sick children, he cannot get her out of his mind. But is he looking for a good time or is he finally ready for commitment?

Hardball by V.K. Sykes is a great contemporary novel with a fabulous storyline.

When Doctor Holly meets pitcher Nate you can feel the sparks fly, the attraction between them is huge and you know a relationship is not far behind. Both characters are not looking for a long term commitment, Holly wants to focus on her career and Nate’s family history has left him wary of relationships and settling down.

But when Holly’s life is in danger because she wants to protect her young patient, Nate is determined to keep her save.

I love Holly and Nate from the start, they both have their baggage from the past and need to deal with it in their own way. They are forced to think about that and their relationship when Holly’s life is in danger. It was great to see that Nate finally came to his senses and admit his true feelings for Holly.

This book has kept my attention from the start and I couldn’t put it down until I finished it. It was great and I really hope to read more of this writing couple in the near future.

4.5 out of 5. A delightful novel that is great for romance fans, sports fans, and for those who really like a spicy story with some very real edge to it. The doctor has her professional demands, not the least are the concerns of the parents of her pediatric patients. It is not pleasant when a parent just can't seem to cooperate, but when a parent becomes threatening and uses intimidation to prevent treatment for his child, then things heat up and the story is not only a romance with its ups and downs but the element of threat and violence hovers in the background. This is a story of the clash of two worlds: the world of high-tech medicine and the world of professional sports, and the cultures and people who inhabit them. Trying to bridge the gap between the two can be tricky and managing to do so can be the most challenging undertaking either the doctor or the baseball player have ever faced. Add in an incapacitating injury, a difference of viewpoints that threatens to derail the love affair, and you have a book that is compelling on many fronts and which will keep the reader moving forward with avid interest just to see if 1) these two can make it and 2) the parent of the hurting child can be caged. I read it in one sitting and highly recommend it as full of dynamic action, hot loving, and some life lessons we all can stand to learn about ourselves and those we either are in relationship with or with those we hope to eventually relate to. Just a really terrific read!

Ooo, this book is hot! Nate Carter starts out as seemingly sort of full of himself and that's exactly what Dr. Holly Bell thinks when she first meets him. Quickly she and we readers realize that's not the case. Holly and Nate quickly fall into a relationship even though they come from two very different worlds. This book sucked me right in!

The book is a romance and there is some hotness throughout the book but this book has great characters that really serve to carry the story along. Nate is a pro baseball player who is down to earth and very caring. Holly Bell is a pediatric doctor who is mired in a case where she thinks one of her young patients may be being abused. The patient's father is a pretty terrible guy. He's rough and has a pretty sordid past where he got away with some things that he should have never gotten away with. Holly is frightened for her patient, Tyler. Holly isn't sure that she's going to be able to take care of the situation with Tyler's father without making it worse. Luckily she's pretty resourceful! There's definitely more that meets the eye in this book.

I flew through it (most of it in one afternoon). It was the perfect book for curling up on the couch on a chilly afternoon with.

Bottom line: If you're looking for a romance with a good story line, this certainly fits the bill!

An all-star Philly baseball player, Nate Carter, bumps into a sweet doctor with a big heart, Holly Bell when he's making rounds cheering up children at the local hospital. The chemistry is instant and Nate knows he'll need to find a plan to get to know the good doctor better.

Holly was caught off guard when the charming, athletic, breathtaking Nate stumbles into her in one of her patient's rooms. Cautious with her heart and dedicated to her work, dating a celebrity athlete was not part of her plan. When Nate asks her to accompany him to a golf dinner, however, she finds it hard to refuse.

As things grow steamy between Nate and Holly, things at the hospital begin to heat up as well - but not in a good way. A difficult father threatens Holly's life as well as puts the life of his son in jeopardy. Holly must put the boy first in a fight to save his life, despite his father's threats and stalking. Meanwhile she's falling fast and hard for Nate, who doesn't appear to be ready to make the some commitment she is. Will Nate be willing to give up his wild lifestyle for Holly? Will Holly risk her life to save her patient?

This book is a page turner. A great mix of an exciting story, a steamy hot romance, and a nice dose of baseball for the fans out there. I totally loved this book!

There's a whole lotta story in this story, and for that alone I'd say you'll get your money's worth out of this book.

Here's my 2 cents worth:

The author is actually a husband/wife team and they write an excellent sports erotic romance.

Dr. Holly Bell is a no-nonsense pediatric cardiac surgeon. Love interest Nate Carter is one hot, charming and disarmingly sexy baseball player. Even as her brain is saying "no, bad idea", her mouth is saying "yes, Yes, Ok, yes". It's actually funny at times, because she acquiesces as she is thinking it's a bad idea to get involved, but she just can't help herself. There's no denying their chemistry and they burn up the sheets, but Holly is not interested in dealing with a playboy. She wants monogamy. Nate is nothing if not honest. He's seriously enamored with Holly and not interested in anyone else but doesn't want anyone putting restrictions on him.

Holly deals with some crazy parents, some very sick kids and the distraction of a hot man, where she can't afford the distraction. It's a sweet story, with some realistic touches of sadness but I PROMISE you'll still get your HEA!

Even if you're not a sports fan, this book is a fun ride.

I got Hardball by V.K. Sykes for free on Amazon.

Hardball is a pleasant contemproary romance with a lot of heat!
Just have a look-see at the cover.

To me the story doesn't really have any surprises in it, but it's very well written and easy to read. There is some suspense in the book and I knew there was going to be a showdown close to the end.

Holly is a strong, successful, some what shy female heroine and I enjoyed her standing up to Nate for what she needed and wanted.
Nate was a really down to earth guy even if he was a rich ballplayer.

The characters are very likeable, their strengths are shown as well as their flaws, so the reader can see them as real people. It was nice to seeing thier relationship develop threw out the book.
Holly and Nate definitely had a connection from the beginning. They each view life from a very different perspective and thats were you get some obstacles that they most over come.
Regardless of the theme (CR,SR,PNR,etc) of a book I like it when it grabs your interest right from the first and won't let loose until the very end. For me That is the kind of story I really like and the kind I perfer when its all said and done.

Dr. Holly Bell is a pediatric surgeon who just started her new position at a hospital in Philadelphia. She meets the infamous Nate Carter, a pro ball player (though she's never heard of him), while he's visiting sick children. Immediate sparks and let the romance begin.

There's also some stuff about a crazy ass father of an ill patient, but I'm not gonna go there.

I guess the doc's been less than active sexually, and yet that doesn't stop her from doing Nate on the first date. Apparently she just can't control herself, and I just can't blame her. lol. Nate Carter is handsome, thoughtful, charming and good with kids to boot. Throw in that he's rich and sexy and it makes for an irresistible combo for Dr. Bell.

Apart from a few wardrobe malfunctions near the beginning, I enjoyed the story. Toward the end, I just wanted Nate to say he'd stop seeing other ladies already. Why wouldn't he just say it??!! We all knew he wanted to. ;)

Oh yes... I got a kick out of the twist with the snow globe. You'll have to read it for yourself if you want to know what I'm talking about. It's worth a read.

This book was a good read, good characters and storyline. Dr. Holly Bell comes across as a confident "don't take no shit" kind of gal but when she meets Nate Carter, a pro baseball player she falls head over heels. I though Nate was a bit stuck up his own butt at the beginning and even throughout yet not as much. He always gets the girls and he's the best pitcher ever etc etc. however I did like him.
When he and Holly are going through a 'hard time' I really felt for Holly, some would see she was pushing Nate to soon but I can actually see her point. She wanted to know if it was going somewhere or if a few months down the line he'd find a new fancy because she knew she was falling for him. In return he wants her to wait for him to make the decision whether he wants her or wants to bang other women! If it was me he'd get a slap in the chops and kick somewhere else.
The story was good, not that exciting except for the end with the counter story but still made me smile reading it and hot sex scenes too :D 4 stars

Nate Carter is a buff (duh) baseball player who visits the children’s wing of the local hospital and meets the new doctor in town. Holly Bell is a workaholic who cares overly much for her patients and doesn’t have time to date. He is from a working class family; she is from a wealthy one. He plays the field, she seldom dates. But the electricity flies and the two become involved. In the ointment are an offer to play for another team across the country, threats coming from a young patient’s father, fear of commitment from him and desire for commitment from her. This may be a typical romance novel but the story is well written and had me rooting for the hero and heroine as they loved, fought and loved again.

Favorite line: “God, that little taste just makes me want more,” she breathed. “What a beast. A beautiful beast, for sure, but still a beast.” (She was talking about his Aston Martin DB9.)

Holly is a slightly neurotic surgeon with less-than-stellar social skills. I actually commiserate with her because when it came to dating, I wasn't one to play around either. Before I started dating my husband, we had a long talk about where we saw the relationship going. We didn't want to waste our time. So I get Holly's thing for not wanting to put energy into what amounts to a fling. I think she could have handled it better, though...like, say, letting Nate know that before they started dating or at least before they ran off to Florida for the weekend. But whatever. I get her; it just doesn't make for great reading.

And what was with her going on and on about "feeling safe" with Nate? Jesus, girl, go take a self-defense class or something. I got tired of her relying on the men-folk (the detective, Nate, or Nate's bff) to keep her safe. Give me a story about a girl who can take care of herself anyday and I'll be happy!

I'm not inclined to try another of their novels.

I love Nate's character in this series...he is the quintessential jock douchebag when you look at him on the outside, but when you step into his mind you see he's not what everyone leads you to believe he is. He's known as a playboy with a long string of girls from different cities....then he meets Dr. Holly Bell and his whole life gets flipped upside down, and he doesn't know how to handle the emotions she brings out in him. When Holly brings up the fact that she is NOT into sharing Nate tries to make her see his side of things...but Holly refuses to be anything but the only woman in Nate's life so she breaks-up with him (something that NO ONE has EVER done to him).
Due to circumstances Nate is forced to realize just how much Holly means to him, and how much he CAN'T afford to lose her.

I loved the plot, as well as the characters and I can't wait to read Martha's story next....

Hardball is a pleasant romance with a lot of heat! You can probably guess the amount of heat by the cover. It's too bad I read the ebook and didn't get to look at it in between chapters!

The story doesn't really have any surprises in it, but it's very well written and easy to read. Holly is a strong female protagonist and enjoyed her standing up to Nate for what she needed. The characters are very likeable, and oh so very human. Their strengths are shown as well as their flaws, so the reader can see them as real people.

If you prefer your romance without any spice, then give this book a skip. Everyone else, you'll really enjoy it!

It was a good book...I would say even a 3.5. It kept me reading, but have to admit there were some areas where I could definitely see where others reviews came from as Holly was quite a bit insecure...not that I cannot understand her fear of dating a professional athlete with a reputation as a women's man....however, she is successful, attractive, and smart so not sure why she was as insecure as she was. His issues with commitment didn't sit well either. He didn't have much of a basis for it other than being an attractive ball player that women flock to and not wanting to settle down. The whole he and his sister are wired different didn't make sense just as Jake pointed out. Overall, I liked the book, but it wasn't my favorite.

With the unique perspective of BOTH the male and the female in a new relationship and navigating falling in love the husband and wife writing duo make this a highly credible romance. Dr. Holly Bell is swept off her feet by Nate Carter who is a superstar pitcher for a baseball team and she wonders how she compares with the other women Nate has been with and is she really special to him. As they spend more time together Nate has to decide if Holly is worth exclusivity and the conversations and the thought processes of both characters come alive in how men and women approach relationships and made for a solid book. The cover of this book got my attention but the characters fleshed out the story and made it a worthwhile read.
