About the author

Dr. Connie Curran is a highly regarded national healthcare leader, speaker, and consultant. She brings a unique depth of experience that ranges from the patient's bedside, to the classroom, to the executive suite, to the boardroom, and beyond.

A former hospital floor nurse and clinician at a medically-underserved community health center, Dr. Curran took her concern for better patient care to the administrative suite, where she could have greater influence on care delivery.

Today, Dr. Curran heads CurranAssociates, a healthcare consulting group specializing in healthcare services and human resources leadership and management issues. Previously, Dr. Curran was the first executive director of C-Change, a national organization focused on the eradication of cancer. C-Change is the first to bring together the heads of the public, for-profit, and not-for-profit sector organizations, and the motion picture industry and media, to focus on one health issue. C-Change is actively led by President George H.W. Bush and Mrs. Barbara Bush as co-chairs, and US Senator Dianne Feinstein as vice chair. Dr. Curran also was the founder, president and chief executive officer of CurranCare, LLC, a national management and consulting services organization, from 1995 to 2000. It then was acquired by Cardinal Health, where she served as President of Cardinal Health Consulting Services and led a staff of approximately 200 consultants.

Dr. Curran has been an executive at academic and national healthcare organizations, as well. She was the Chief Nursing Officer of Montefiore Medical Center, then the nation's largest nursing department; Vice President of the American Hospital Association; National Director of Patient Care Services and vice chair of APM, Inc; and dean at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Curran is one of the most prolific scholars in the field with more than 200 publications and several research programs to her credit. She directed two of the most comprehensive national studies on staff recruitment, retention, and labor market participation. More recently, she co-authored books on hospital-physician integration, hospital redesign, and on optimized home care integration. She also served as editor of Nursing Economic$ for fifteen years. She is a graduate of the Harvard Business School program for company owners and presidents.

Dr. Curran serves on the board of directors for three publicly traded corporations: Hospira, Inc., DeVry, Inc., and Volcano, Inc. She formerly served on the boards of Pyxis, Allegiance Healthcare, Cardiodynamics, and IDX, Inc. Dr. Curran also serves on the boards of The National Student Nurses Association, DePaul University, and is immediate past-chairman of the board of Silver Cross Hospital, which she helped lead to repeated Top 100 Hospital status.
