Some books have a huge impact on a person and I would say this could be one of them. Susan Willoughby includes not only facts and figures, but also real-life accounts (journal and diary entries) to tell of this horrific event in our recent history. If you are not left completely bewildered and saddened, you have not connected with the intent of this book. At the end, “the lessons of the past” are included. It is pointed out to the reader that “social and economic hardships can provide opportunities for fanatical leaders to seize power.” I really do hope we have learned a lot from this past experience in our history; May we never forget it. I would highly recommend this book for every student. It is a rather long book for a picture book and would take some time to read. It would be a great book for junior high school students studying world history.
