Are You Afraid of the Dark?: An unforgettable suspense crime mystery novel

Rate this book
A chilling thriller and a classic from the internationally bestselling Sidney Sheldon, author of The Other Side of Midnight and If Tomorrow Comes.

In New York, Denver, Paris and Berlin, four people have died separately in apparent accidents.

The widows of two of the dead, Diane Stevens, a well-connected, affluent artist from the Upper East Side and Kelly Harris, an African-American model, find themselves under ruthless attack and are drawn together in fear, confusion and for mutual protection. But why are they being targeted? Is there a connection to the mystery behind their husband’s deaths?

Meanwhile, Tanner Kingsley, Chief Executive of an international Think Tank created only seven years ago, is on the cusp of an amazing discovery which could alter the future of the world and deliver unbelievable power into the company’s hands. But are the mysterious deaths connected to this volatile secret?

Taut with suspense and with an unnervingly realistic premise that could alter our lives, ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK is Sheldon at the top of his form.

Sidney Sheldon (1917-2007) was an American writer who won awards in three careers—a Broadway playwright, a Hollywood TV and movie screenwriter, and a best-selling novelist.

His TV works spanned a twenty-year period during which he created I Dream of Jeannie (1965-70), Hart to Hart (1979-84), and The Patty Duke Show (1963-66), but it was not until after he turned 50 and began writing best-selling novels such as Master of the Game (1982), The Other Side of Midnight (1973) and Rage of Angels (1980) that he became most famous.

could also be called "the bitches did it again!" because really, how many times can someone say that in one novel? it was like a scooby doo episode. "and i would have gotten away with it too....." and that would have made more sense than the title, which is just dumb and has nothing to do with the plot at all.

but seriously, i was rooting for the bad guys sometimes, because the heroes are just.... pathetic airhead twats. at some point, i kept reading hoping they would all die.

in the end, i decided that i didn't like any of the characters, including the bad guys, and while this book is reaching for some higher ground hinting at domestic abuse, women's shelters, environmental issues, anorexia, women's lib, spiritualism, sex trade, capitalism, sexism, etc, etc, etc.... it doesn't actually say anything or delve into any of these problems in any significant way. it's like the author decided to throw in some "hot topics" from a newspaper without really understanding any of it.

Sheldon's last novel, and on the contrast the first Sidney Sheldon novel that I've read, this was 'THE' book that actually developed my interest 'FOR READING'.
Coming to the book, as the title suggests, this novel is a blend of suspense and thrill. The story revolves around the murder of 4 people in different cities across the globe, but having a common thread amongst them. A light read for those who have just started reading novels and a fine source to amplify your reading interests.

3/5 from my side !

I can't believe this book really happened! I can't believe it was written by Sidney Sheldon! This book was such a disaster, it looked like an amateur writer tried his hand at imitating Sheldon's writing, and failed at it, terribly.

The only reason why I'm giving it 2 stars is because it was a fast paced read.

Meet Diane Stevens and Kelly Marks, wives of two scientists who worked in KIG, a famous think-tank. The husbands were dead under mysterious circumstances and these women are hunted down by some savage killer. This book is all about how they escape from the killer, get caught (because they try to do something stupid), escape again because the killer is even dumber than them, again get caught, because they are more dumber, escape again because...

Need I tell more? This is utter nonsense. What a poorly written plot, what senseless characters. I feel like this whole book is some well played joke on the reader.

It seems that I’m in a Sidney Sheldon marathon this January. This is my second Sheldon novel for the month; I had Morning, Noon & Night last week. What I appreciate about Sidney Sheldon is that his books are always page-turners, the kind that makes you not want to drop the book until you get to the last page. This is the reason why I was able to finish the each of the books above for only one day.

But like what I said in my review of Morning, Noon & Night, I find Are You Afraid of the Dark? too predictable for my taste. I may not be much of a fan of Sidney Sheldon but I have read a number of his works enough for me to acquire a sense of familiarity as to what his stories are like. And this is what bothers me the most because Sheldon no longer surprise me at all. For most parts of the book, I was busy making bets with myself as “who did it” and find out that I had been always right with my guesses. Still, when it comes to suspense, Sheldon for me is one master storyteller. His writing style is simple yet vivid, effortless and fluid. His story plots are always absorbing and intricate and his characters are very complex and intriguing.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? takes the reader into a tour of New York, Denver, Paris, and Berlin and the hide-and-seek action makes the virtual tour even more appealing. However, I can’t help comparing it to most of the works of Dean Koontz, to which I confess I am an avid fan. Most of time, while reading the book, I always had to remind myself that I am reading Sidney Sheldon and not Dean Koontz. There is an apparent closeness to most of Dean Koontz’s plots, particularly the concept of a “think tank” with conspiracy, and the cat-and-mouse chases that usually goes with it.

I have some problems, though, with the way Sheldon peppered the book with quite a number of flashbacks. It somehow added to my confusion especially that there are a lot of names of the characters that I have to remember.

Nonetheless, this is a story pregnant with much suspense and action, and the revelation towards the ending is a strong probability worthy of discussion.

“Kelly, there is magic, but you have to be the magician. You have to make the magic happen.”
― Sidney Sheldon, Are You Afraid of the Dark?

SPOILERS:

I hate to give any book by Sheldon a 2 as I am a big fan. This did not even seem like him though. It could have been any mass marketed thriller.

The book featured one thing I do not like in books..non stop chase scenes and action oriented sequences where the main characters, through almost insurmountable odds, do not get a scratch on them. It was not believable in the slightest and I just could not take it seriously.

Also this book featured such a depraved villain that I found it was to distasteful reading about him and I started skimming his chapters. I NEVER skim Sheldon.

This was my least favorite of Sheldon books but thankfully most of his books are a 4 and 5.

Okay, so if this book was Sidney Sheldon at the top of his game, I'm definitely not reading any of his other books because I really didn't like this book.

First of all, it was way to predictable. Even for me, who doesn't read a lot of mystery novels. So if you're one who loves mysteries and reads them day in and day out, save yourself the trouble and don't read this one, because a few chapters into the book, it's no longer a mystery.

Another thing that annoyed me about this book was our two protagonists. Of course they're both very young and very beautiful, but on top of that they're incredibly smart and lucky. I mean, everything seems to actually go right for them when it's supposed to be going wrong. They manage to have a steady flow of cash on them, they can get a plane, helicopter, taxi, whatever, whenever they need it. And they're very one demensional too.

I really don't even want to continue talking about the book because I disliked reading it so much. In summary, I didn't like the book because of the predictable plot and the shallow, one-demensional characters who really aren't real women at all but just some author's fantasy of what a perfect woman should be.

Sidney Sheldon's Are you Afraid of the Dark isn't of the same caliber as some of his other works such as Master of the Game, If Tomorrow Comes, or Bloodline. These books have bigger-than-life characters that are still believable. Books like The Best Laid Plans and The Other Side of Midnight have complicated plot twists that the reader considers plausible. The storyline in Are You Afraid of the Dark is simplistic and the book just feels as though it has been rushed. I am a Sidney Sheldon fan, so I still found it suspenseful enough to see through to the end. It just wasn't what I expected.

It's all about the endings, isn't it ? So this is his Omertà, the book that capped off his career and quite possibly his life. Naw, just his career. It's hardly his Deerhunter, an obscure Entourage reference that no one will get, haha. Even if Omertà wasn't written by Ser Puzo it's still better than this novel.

In stasis, just for the heck of it I reread this because clearly I don't love myself enough but I don't think I have laughed aloud like this in a long while. I laughed until it wasn't funny anymore, until it became saddening. This is acceptable by humanity ? When so many others who deserves to be read aren't being read, who ought to be published are not being published, those who should be writing aren't writing , well that one is their own fault.

I must say he had turned telling a story instead of showing one into a fine art form. I thought about it but I just didn't care about the characters. The outdated technology dispirited me since we can do all the googling on our phones now and that's mean, I know . But then again like the author of Kramer vs Kramer said books serves as time capsules that we can revisit, that is such a beautiful thought, right ? So if I wanted to get a 2004 feel I'll just reread this novel as devoid of substance as it was. To be honest, it wasn't so long ago that I was in 2004 and I remember it vividly, we can only hope that our years remember us fondly too.

As brainless as this is, and it is pretty brainless, I can't help but feel that it's ahead of its time filled with dreary fortelling and cold presentiment. Because nowadays everyone is obsessed with climate change, whether they believe it's happening or they are wrong. Haha, just kidding I don't enforce my opinions . The point is everybody got something to say about it. Even a bear's victim that was awarded recently. Oddly enough in 2004 another novel on this subject was released ; State of Fear by Michael Crichton. Safe to say that was a better novel, more persuasive too.

Back to this one, the two stars are for ..... Well, who am I to completely shoot down something that brought joy of reading to countless many. After all I enjoy cotton candy and light kisses too.

"And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling ... "
Yeah, that's like every Scooby Doo villain ever, and rather, unfortunately, applies to the highly comical villains of this lacklustre Sidney Sheldon plot.

With bickering, paper-thin, highly annoying protagonists and a cast of villains so much like the ones Scooby faced, I wonder whether this was actually sponsored by Hanna-Barbera! (Hmm, thinking cap on)

My Rating - 1/5 (aka Utter tosh)

Not the greatest Sidney Sheldon I've read. It had its moments, I guess, but it saddens me that this was the last book he wrote.

The book begins with the death of 4 people, seemingly non connected, except they were all employees of the same international think-tank. 2 of the widows, Diane and Kelly, a painter & a supermodel, are invited to New York to meet with Mr. Kingsley, head of the think-tank, and the events unfold from there.

I won't go into specific details, but the book was subpar compared to Sheldon's usual standards.
The author tried to mislead us with , but it could have been used better later on to generate more complex conflicts and help develop a better story as well as better characters.
Despite being quite eventful, taking us through Europe and then back to New York, the book is kind of dull. I didn't feel connected to the characters, and I just wanted the book to be over so I could move along to something else. It's not that the characters were shallow or one-dimensional, they're okay, but it all felt somehow out of place, you know?
Yes the characters go on a journey, both physically and metaphorically, they grow and with alternating flashbacks and real-time scenes, we see them process their grief and look for closure. However, in the big scheme of things, there was a huge void between the stakes at play and the characters, and I don't mean that they were detached or anything, but that it didn't make much sense that Diane and Kelly, again, a painter & a supermodel, could actually . I don't know, it just felt lazy and there were definitely many pieces missing here.

All said and done, I still believe Sheldon to be a really good author who really knew how to write women in thrillers without falling into the clichés and stereotypes that dominated the end of the 20th century. Nonetheless, this is far from being his best work, and I invite you to read books like Master of the Game, which is a great great book that happens to showcase his abilities as a storyteller.

Utilizing his typical berserk, page-turning style, Sheldon takes us directly into the story with a progression of passings that are made to look like suicides. At the point when the spouses of two of the "suicide" casualties get together to collaborate, they understand there is an abnormal association between their husbands' passings – the two men worked for a mammoth organization called the Kingsley International Group, and the two men were headed to Washington, D.C., to meet with somebody about something risky. Something that would cost them, and twelve or so others, their lives.

Something many refer to as "Prima."

It's really hard to believe this book was written by Sidney Sheldon. Though he's known for writing popular, commercial fiction, this book was downright pretentious and lame! It's riddled with too many unnecesary flashbacks and near misses. The plot, characters, situations, everything is just soo lame! Too bad this was the last novel he ever wrote. I kind of feel sorry for him :/

Thirty years back, this book would have felt unputdownable. Now, it's an unbearable drag. My humble suggestion: please avoid this inflated work full of two-dimensional stereotypical characters, which is devoid of any real surprise or twist. You can find much-much better techno-thrillers or suspense-driven thrillers now, dime-a-dozen.
NOT RECOMMENDED.
