Secret agent Rip Haywire is half The Spirit, half Mark Trail, and half Bruce Campbell. And if that adds up to 150% of a character, well, that's just how far over-the-top this globe-trotting rock-em-sock-em noir parody plays it.

Pop culture references, wiseacre asides, and self-aware banter ("Zip it, you two. We're about to head into a dark jungle - predators are attracted to witty repartee") are interspersed with outrageous noir similes ("Give me the compass or I'll lock you away like the recipe for Coke!"). There are enough jokes flying around that one is bound to hit on every page.

As for the art, think Dick Tracy updated with a generous dose of Adult Swim. Bright clear colors, exaggerated lines, and liberal use of silhouettes combine to create a zippy retro style.

Rip is on a new mission, a hunt for the ghost compass and to lift the curse of Tangaroa. Joining him is his every loyal canine sidekick TNT (well mostly loyal) and his sometimes girlfriend/sometimes enemy the always dangerous Cobra, who currently has the ghost compass. They must follow the clues to the two other compasses to life the curse and travel the world. Along the way they must doge Longbeard and his team who are also seeking the ghost compass...and perhaps another secret as well. Will Rip and his team win? Will his mom finally leave him alone about getting a girlfriend? And will TNT’s elephant talking classes pay off? Stay tuned to find out the answers.

I’ve been following the Rip Haywire comic online for a while now and I absolutely love it. It’s like a combination of MacGyver, Mark Trail, and well a lit bit of Mark Twain mixed in. So I was glad to be able to pick up this book and read a tale separate from the comic and boy is this book worth picking up. It’s chock full of humor, action, and intrigue that just kept me turning the pages to the end. In many ways the world is a parody (a really, really funny parody) of Mark Trail/MacGyver, which is fun to read. Dan creates a well paced tale and really interesting characters. And his sense of humor is absolutely fantastic. The little quips that Rip and Cobra throw out at each other kept me laughing. One of my favorite parts of the story is right at the beginning, where TNT tells the tale about how he met Rip (and makes himself the hero of course.) It’s a great story and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

I love the artwork in this series the colors are dead on perfect and the design of each character is absolutely fantastic. I especially love the character designs of the ghost pirates and how they don’t seem to be tied to the era they died in for dress style (one of them looks like a 40’s mobster.) There are just so many great little details and elements of color in each panel, such as the scene where Rip and gang over the edge of a waterfall. The colors are just beautiful in it. And then there are the little parodies that are sprinkled into the story, such as Ripnuts--the parody of Peanuts. He nails the character design and I love the mention of the little red haired girl.

This is a great book whether you’re an old reader or a new reader. Dan does a great job of introducing the characters and how they met so anyone can follow along and not be lost. I can’t wait to see what happens next and I look forward to the future adventures of Rip Haywire.

Solid spoof of the classic high adventure stories. Art is merely okay but what is normal for a satire comic.
