A young girl and her older sister, working in the Triangle Shirtwaist factory, an early twentieth-century sweatshop on the Lower East Side of New York City, join a protest to try to improve the miserable working conditions.
East Side Story is a very short historical fiction book for younger readers. The reason I'm giving it such a low rating is because it is suppose to teach readers about the 1909 shirtwaist strike in New York, but the author doesn't explain what a strike is, or follow the events that took place during it. If I was a young reader with no prior knowledge about early 20th century American labor, I would have been completely lost.
1909, NYC. 11 year old Rachel Boganovitch and her older sister Leah are fired from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory because of Leah's involvement in the union. Leah and Rachel continue helping with the protests for better and safer working conditions.
The story is about the workers' striking prior to the fire in 1911.
