Double M Ranch #1

Mad About Maddie

Rate this book
Madison Preston wants nothing to do with the opposite sex. She only wants to teach the techniques of barrel racing, but doesn't have her own land to accommodate her dream. In order to earn enough money to buy her family home, she settles for training horses on the Double M ranch, but finds it hard to concentrate when a certain cowboy won’t stay out of her way. Even her strong tongue-lashings do nothing more than encourage his sexual innuendoes.

It's going to take a special man to help Maddie overcome her fears of intimacy and abuse. Especially when that man is a hot-blooded, sex-driven cowboy and his very being is dependent upon male-female relations. However, that’s exactly what Jake Dutson does, until, that is, she finds him in the arms of another woman.

All his life Jake Dutson wanted to take in and train abused horses. He has also wanted a place to call home, but being on his own since the tender age of sixteen he's never had that luxury, until now. He's determined to buy a house. He needs the land. What he doe
sn’t need is an entanglement with a woman who has a tongue as sharp as a razor and doesn't mind using it. Believing he isn't interested in long term relationships, Jake's world is rocked when he discovers the only place he finds home is in Madison's arms.

Now he only has to convince Maddie their love is worth the ride.

Cowboys, horses, and chaps, Madison Preston works in a world typically dominated by men. Madison trains abused horses that are dangerous and unpredictable. She is a gifted, patient equestrian and the horses respond to her methods of natural horsemanship.

Maddie takes a position at the Double M Ranch and settles into the rhythm of training and soothing the ill-treated mounts. When out for a ride on a recovering steed Maddie is literally and metaphorically pulled off her saddle. With her heart thumping and her breathing labored, Maddie struggles to see who has ripped her from her horse and what his intentions are. Maddie turns to find she 19s been horse-jacked by Jake Dutson, the foreman of the Double M Ranch. Jake assumes Maddie is in trouble because the horse she is riding 1Cisn 19t fully broke, 1D not aware that she was hired while he was away. But Maddie 19s heard more than enough about the infamous, Mr. Dutson, his reputation as a Casanova having preceded him. Furious, Maddie makes it clear how she feels about being manhandled by the presumptuous cowboy.

This first frenzied meeting sets the tone for the book. In addition, Maddie 19s job as a trainer of battered horses is a metaphor for her own life, having survived an abusive relationship. Jake, too, is wounded, scarred from a wrong inflicted long ago. Maddie and Jake 19s pasts have all the ingredients for a tempestuous relationship at full gallop, and that is exactly what they have. Sparks fly; Jake and Maddie are so attracted to each other they are out of control. They 19re like sexually mature salmon who must return home to spawn. They both try to fight the attraction for different reasons. But there is no denying the pull, the draw, or the lust. And, while their chemistry is set to a boil their relationship is fraught with misunderstandings, assumptions and is absent of true communication. Jake and Maddie 19s love story careens at the speed of a canter. There is no easing into the relationship for these two, as the relationship is nitrous-hormone driven. Because their love story occurs so quickly, there is no true emotional development between Jake and Maddie.

Nevertheless, Mad About Maddie, is an enjoyable ride. After all, that 19s how attraction is sometimes. You 19re sideswiped. You never see it coming. Such is the case for Maddie and Jake. If you 19re a fan of romance and, in particular, romance in a western setting, you 19ll be in Stetson heaven.

Romance-fiction-Erotica is not my select choice for reading material. But I do have to say, I enjoyed this particular read. Maybe it was because the storyline wrapped itself around a ranch where abused horses were being treated and trained by natural training methods and I love horses and so wanted to be near them forever. However, I gave up my horses when I married many years ago....one of those situations where you can't have your cake and eat it too! Anyway, Madison, (Maddie) Preston, had returned to her hometown and landed a job at the Double M Ranch as the abused horse trainer. She had left an abusive relationship herself, which had scarred her emotions and left her with a plan to live her life alone, self sufficient and strong enough not to need a man in her life. Her plan provided safety and she had worked hard to get where she was alone and strong. But she didn't count on Jake Dutson, stirring every nerve, and every hormone in her petite body. Jake had been away from the ranch when Maddie had hired on so she came as quite a surprise when he returned and found her riding one of the untamed stallions. Needless to say, he ruffled her feathers, but he was also a cowboy in lust...The two were drawn together
as if there were magnets. Each found a great need in the other...a need no one else could possibly fill.

The story I liked. The plot I liked. The Character development was excellent. The hot steamy sex scenes were a little too hot for me; I like my imagination to have something to do while the characters are busy in the boudoir. That's just me. There surely must be a market for this as a lot of romance writing includes very descriptive sex scenes these days. This was definitely an ADULT read. The book was short, so easily read in a day. Overall I did enjoy the book! Maybe I am no longer a prude! lol

For a story that dealt with some pretty heavy topics, it wasn't weighted down by them. Both Maddie and Jake were likeable and sweet in their own way and really cute together!
