A history of modern art starting with Giotto and ending at Augustus John. Many (black and white, unfortunately) illustrations of the works discussed. This is the John O'London's edition.
Interesting to see how artists move in and out of fashion. Some that were highly praised at the beginning of the twentieth century are now forgotten, others are revered now but didn't get a mention then. For me, the important thing about this book found at the back of someone else's shelves is that it sent me to the internet to learn more about the artists and study their work online - there are some marvellous websites out there. I'd guess this book will never get another mention on Goodreads, but at least now it is not forgotten.
