Stranded. He is the only thing keeping her alive. Her Captain's Survival. Tallie is to shy, but she's lusted after the man she thought her Commander to be. Against her will, she is forced to go on a mission to an alien world. Disaster, they are stranded, trapped. Captain Boa knows there is no escape off the ugly alien planet. Sure death in days, weeks, or months sets him free to explore the dominance he's kept under control. He is a Variant, genetically born to be enslaved by womb born humans. His rage is just. Will he make Tallie pay or will they find their passions ignited? Tallie is a civilian recruit under the command of Captain Ry Boa. The Captain is ordered to take Tallie into enemy territory against his better judgment, but orders are orders, and things go wrong fast. This is an erotic tale of eventual submission and dark tangled lust and love. Set on a distant planet, in the midst of harsh survival, a man and a woman test the boundary of need, when they believe there is no chance of rescue. HFN *This is the first title in the "Her Captain's Command 1: Stripped" short (20,000 words) story series. "Her Captain's Command 2: Hunted" is the next (40,000 words) story available now. Each story can stand alone or as part of the saga.
Really I think that this and the follow-up story 'Hunted' should have been published as one (if at all), because this little tidbit is so darn short and ends so abruptly. While 'Stripped' was marginally better than 'Hunted', I'm gonna put my thoughts for both in this review.
The premise of this story sort of reminded me somewhat of Starship Troopers with some (bad) bdsm kink thrown in - there's a hastily formed earth military fighting a relatively unknown alien aggressor. The hero (and I use that term loosely because the guy is an a$$hat) is a genetically modified human who's captain of a starship and the heroine (or doormat) is a reserve soldier who's a tech specialist on the ship. Following an operation gone wrong, the two are stranded on the hostile planet and while trying to stay alive and get to safety they, of course, "get-it-on". More accurately, the guy decides that if he's gonna die soon he might as well take out his aggression on the closest available semen depository. Truly, I found his treatment of "his woman" quite appalling - especially in 'Hunted'.
Another major turn-off in the story was the "erotic" language. The guy frequently refers to his tool as a dong. Seriously. Not sexy. At all. If 'Stripped' and 'Hunted' are a testament to Christina Stoke's talent as an author, then I'm officially not a fan. Sorry.
Bad. It was bad, people. Basically porn with plot, but bad porn. Two people get stranded on a hostile alien planet during a war and are being actively hunted. So they have lots of bad BDSM sex...obviously. It's what you do, right? Worse, he's predominantly turned on by the fact that he has complete control of this woman and she has no escape. The reader is reminded of this repeatedly. He claims her and initiates sex without her consent. Then, he viscously spanks and whips her without her knowing why and as she begs him to stop. This is not kinky sex. This is abuse. Period. All exacerbated by bad writing that ends so abruptly it is literally in the middle of a sex scene.
this book's one saving grace is that it's short. the point of view alternates each chapter between the H and h. the author occasionally helps you realize this by having the character refer to him/herself by name. it's amusing it its awkwardness. the h (Tallie) starts off as this super shy woman who can't even look the H in the eye when she talks to him. the H (capt. Boa) is an aloof commander who inexplicably lashes out against his officers when they ask him to join them in a game of air hockey. he must really hate air hockey.
Boa is commanded to take Tallie to an enemy planet in order for her to plant a bomb or virus into the aliens' communications system. they get thrown off course when their ship explodes, which means they won't make the rendezvous point and are now stuck indefinitely on this planet. Boa's still determined to plant the bomb/virus but hey, since they're probably going to get killed by the enemy, he might as well take the opportunity to turn Tallie into his sex slave.
so yes, while they are in a hostile environment, in danger of being discovered and killed by the aliens at any moment, Boa has Tallie unzip her flight suit and tie it around her waist so that he can look at her boobs while they're running through the jungle. when camped for the day, she's only to wear her panties with the crotch conveniently torn, and, when they're sleeping, be naked. obviously, they're having lots of LOUD sex. guess the aliens are deaf. remember when i said Tallie was super shy? well, by the end of the book it's all "fuck your naughty slut, baby". that's what you call character development (*cough*).
and that's just the plot! the writing itself is like something that's been put through a Babelfish translator. here are a few examples:
-"I'd make a good guess he is very angry, but he is trying to control it. At me?" -"But I'm impish, truly I am. Though I can't speak to him casually or barely even look at him, my nature is well...it's mine." -"The badly-mannered man and his partner stumble" -"I've always lived with this lesser complex."
there are so many many more. i didn't even talk about the sex. i'm just going to say you know you're scraping the bottom of the synonym barrel when you have to use the word "dong" in your "hot" sex scene.
if you should get to the end of this tale and find yourself sad that it's over, don't despair; there's a sequel coming soon.
I feel like my review is going to end up more as a caution piece.
First of all, pay attention to the clues in the blurb- 'set free to explore his dominance', 'rage' 'take out on Tallie' 'dark'. Captain Ry Boa is an enhanced human in a futuristic sci-fi universe. His types are looked down on by 'womb borns' as those birthed naturally are called. He is rough, aggressive and dark in his desires. He has latched on to a shy, submissive woman that he watched from a distance, but now has under his thumb on the alien planet where they are stranded.
Secondly, the dark desires are kinky and the hero is dominant, but I want to make it clear that this is not a BDSM story. This is a dub-con Master/slave with the master loving edgy sadism and humiliation. He uses Tallie's attraction and desire for rough sex. His thoughts are not tender and he is not gentle. The captain is in fact not a romance hero. This is not a romance. Its dark erotica. That being said, it doesn't go as dark as some that I've read.
Thirdly, don't pick this up if you're looking for a story line and story development. This is a quick, dirty hot read with the 'story' being just the impetus to get from point A to point B for the characters. The author most likely meant for it to be this way so don't grab it if you are looking for character and story development. Grab it because you need something hot and quick.
It ends abruptly, but the blurb makes it clear that this is only the first half of a story so know this going in.
There, you've been cautioned. Make of it what you will. ;)
...don't mind when the hero goes all Alpha male dominant on the heroine. ...can overlook themes of dubious consent. ...like their BDSM to feel a little dark. ...enjoy a futuristic feel to their stories.
I'm wavering on how I feel about the dubious consent here. While it could be argued that Tallie was willing and she was simply too shy to make a move, the fact that Ry was her commanding officer kinda squicked me. But... she did ultimately choose to engage in his form of play and she did enjoy it. So, *inarticulate noise*. Yeah, wavering. However, I did like the dark edge to their play. So, you know, *thumbs up* to that.
Wow, I wouldn't mind being stranded on a planet with Captain Boa!
Okay, but seriously...I really liked the storyline with the 'varients vs. humans'. The author does a great job developing Tallie's and Captain Boa's characters at the beginning and the subsequent tension between them is hot. You are left hanging at the end, but hey, that's what the sequel is for! The only thing I didn't like about this book was some of the sexual terms that were used. I've never read an erotic romance story where the word 'dong' was used repeatedly...so that kind of turned me off. But if you can ignore that and you like erotic fiction with elements of BDSM, you'll probably enjoy this short story.
This might be one of the oddest books I've read in a long time. You are sort of just thrown right into it - I found it very confusing for the first maybe 15%. I liked the characters a lot which kept me reading. I liked how Tallie had spunk - and I thought the sex scenes were pretty hot. I liked it enough to buy the next one which was better IMHO (longer so got to be a bit more wordy and explanatory).
Listen, I really liked the premise and I too, think that both stories (1&2) should have been combined. Captian Boa, yum! I wanted to love this story, I did! But, every time I heard "Dong" I cringed. Captian Boa spoke in crude terms then used dong....huh? I think this has the potential to be a really fantastic SciFi Erotica so please take them (Books 1&2) back smoosh them together and rework the story a bit Oh yea, please don't forget to remove all reference to "dong"....please!!
P0rntastic. It is what it is: wall to wall smexxing with p0rnish dialogue/phrasing (cum slut, titties n clitties being rubbed, tugged and pinched, and 12" hard as steel dongs spewing eruptions all over. o_0 ) but it was full of wtfery fun-- and I was in kinda interested in the condom-thin veneer of a plot, such as it was-- until the abrupt (as in mid-smexxing) ending.)
