In a city so dismal it's known only as "the Hole," a clan of Sorcerers has been plucking people off the streets to use as guinea pigs for atrocious "experiments" in the black arts. In a dark alley, Nikaido found Caiman, a man with a reptile head and a bad case of amnesia. To undo the spell, they're hunting and killing the Sorcerers in the Hole, hoping that eventually they'll kill the right one. But when En, the head Sorcerer, gets word of a lizard-man slaughtering his people, he sends a crew of "cleaners" into the Hole, igniting a war between two worlds.
Q Hayashida (林田球, Hayashida Kyu) is a manga author from Tokyo. Hayashida studied oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. She has discussed her childhood and artistic inspirations in interviews but maintains a high level of privacy about her personal life, to the point that her true name and face are unknown. Hayashida's first major manga was Maken X Another (1999-2001), a comic book adaptation of a video game. Her most famous work is the 23-volumes long Dorohedoro (2000-2018). It was originally serialised in the alternative manga magazine 'Monthly Ikki', but it was later moved to 'Hibana' when Ikki ceased publication, and finally transferred to 'Monthly Shōnen Sunday'. Dorohedoro has been partially adapted into an anime on Netflix in 2018. Hayashida's most recent manga series Dai Dark began serialisation in 2019 in the pages of Monthly Shōnen Sunday.
It's been a while since I read the previous volume. Sometimes, taking breaks between volumes can be refreshing, especially if you're not fully enjoying the story.
That wasn't the case here—this volume was a great read.
The art continues to be the standout feature of the series, but the story isn't far behind. It's a lighthearted tale with incredibly charming characters.
I believe this series has the potential to keep improving as the plot deepens.
We get a lot of backstory in this volume, mostly centering around Shin and Noi. It would've been easy for this to slip into the pitfall of filler material, if not for two things. First, Shin & Noi are interesting characters, and it's actually nice to learn more about them. Second, there's a theme that ties the flashback to the action in the present day: people doing things they said they never would, for the sake of those they care about. It's a nicely-framed volume.
And running concurrently through the narrative is an event in the sorcerers' world called "blue night." Part competition, and part celebration, it provides an interesting look into how the sorcerers' society works.
All in all, Dorohedoro continues to be a very enjoyable series, and one I still recommend highly.
Books that review themselves: "Listen, with the time controller, Risu's unknown whereabouts and what the man inside the lizard's mouth said . . . there are just too many things that need clarification."
I'm not charmed enough by the humor or the characters to forgive the sloppy mess that passes for a plot in this series.
Last volume, everyone was distracted by a baseball game. This time everyone is getting ready for the big festival. Next volume, will they be doing home-made chocolates for Valentine's Day and White Day?
I have one more volume on hand from the library, but I'm feeling right now, it will be the last volume I check out from the library for this series.
FOR REFERENCE:
Contents: Spell 24. Mr. Monster, La-la-la -- Spell 25. Gorgeous and Gorging -- Spell 26. Blue Night Land -- Spell 27. Oh, "Flowersmoke" -- Spell 28. The Wonderful Meat Pie -- Spell 29. The Strange Mushroom Appears!! -- Spell 30. Welome, Mr. Mushroom -- Extra Evil
3.5 there interesting things present in this volume, like Blue Night event which gives us more context about sorceries society; backstory of Shin and Noi. But still, the story line - not strong , and also I found this volume kind of messy.
In volume 5, we got to see more of the wizard's world, learnt Noi & Shin backstory, saw Nikaido being badass but things took a dangerous turn. Also Noi is hot but we've been knew
Nastała Sina Noc i czarownicy bawią się w berka. Trochę wspominek też się trafia. Za to na koniec mamy nietypową sytuację dla Nikaido. To jest Dorohedoro...
I love spending time in the worlds of Dorohedoro. In volume 5, Caiman settles into life undercover in the sorcerer’s world, selling meat pies and kicking ass. The highlight in this volume is learning the backstory of how Shin and Noi met and became partners.
( I am currently re-reading the series, my review will be edited later! I enjoyed all of the volumes though! :D)
All of my Dorohedoro reviews are actually a summary of what I've read & some thoughts! I have the memory of a goldfish.
[RE-READ] SEPTEMBER 2021 TW: Strong language, blood & gore, graphic violence, body horror Rating: 5 stars
Spoilers ahead!
Yay, Blue Night! One of my favourite arcs. It's not only action-packed. There's a lot of bloodshed, comedy and suspense. A treat from the very beginning. The cover is blue too! :D Blue for Blue Night.
Caiman began his new life in the sorcerer's realm. . He tried finding more information regarding the cross-eyes. At the park, the Blue Night party is mentioned and apparently, the cross-eyes group is associated with black powder. He ran out of money and seeks for a job. Caiman wanders around and witnesses a fight. Although he claims to despise sorcerers, he decided to lend a hand. He could've minded his own business and let them be. The person saved by Caiman is one of the staff of Tanba, an owner of a restaurant specialising in pies. Tanba offered Caiman a job and a place to stay. Here, Fukuyama and Kirion are introduced too. Apparently, some 'collectors' wanted to kidnap talented sorcerers such as Fukuyama for Blue Night.
As Blue Night draws close, En being En (over the top ) hires a tailor to design outfits for the syndicate and himself. . Even Judas's Ear got a custom made outfit. The family prepares for Blue Night. Chota invited himself. The topic of a sorcerer with the ability to control time came up. It has something to do with the smoke shop that En recently purchased. En has been searching for a sorcerer with this rare ability with plans to make them his partner. He investigated further on the murder at the smoke shop.
Sorcerers can apply to partner up with any of the registered members from En's syndicate. They are required to fill out an application and leave their magic samples. If they pass, they get an invitation to the party. You can also opt to buy tickets for the festival.
Thoughts on their outfits: Noi wore heels but couldn't walk straight. Shin looks the exact same. En and Fujita look normal. Chota's outfit is adorable with the wings hahaha Ebisu..... jealous of Noi's chest size and opted for fake b00bies.
It was revealed that Blue Night lasts for 3 days and comes every 4 years. A festival where sorcerers can play games to find new partners. After midnight, they need to bring their chosen partner to the floating house and sign the contract provided by the devils. Tanba and his staff went to the festival. Caiman was asked to stay but went anyway. He sneaked inside the party as staff.
Ebisu flirts with the men in the family and continues to be in her own world. Fujita asks about how Shin and Noi became partners. Shin and Noi are targeted by collectors. Noi was the first to be kidnapped. It's crazy how Shin has an immediate feeling that something happened to her.
Back at the smoke shop, En's staff found a security camera. We see Nikaido in disguise.
Fujita is persistent in knowing how Shin and Noi became partners. En gladly shares. En used to own a noodle shop called 'Flowersmoke'. We see young Shin running off without paying. He was stopped by Noi. She healed his rotten arms. Shin mentioned wanting to find someone with healing abilities in vol.4 and he did!!!! :') Unfortunately, Noi got hit and he ran off.
Then, we see En hiring Shin as a cleaner (this time he looks a bit older). As En's syndicate is growing, so does his enemies. He requires 'cleaners' as security. Noi trains to become a devil. The two met again at En's shop and bonded over food. So adorable. They keep meeting one another as they got older. As Noi's final training is in process, she is forbidden to use magic for a year. One day when Blue Night was about to begin, a mysterious pair approached them at the restaurant. They blew up the place and attempted to kidnap both of them for Blue Night. ( The same people who are trying to kidnap them this time too!)
Shin saved Noi and got badly injured. On the brink of death, Shin smiled and mentioned that he owed her for fixing his hands. Although she wasn't allowed to use magic, Noi didn't hesitate to heal Shin. Her devil training was annulled as consequence. Shin blames himself. We see an excited Noi being hired as En's cleaner too. The two signed a contract and became partners. (SO CUTEEEEEE!)
We see Risu entering the festival illegally. He is trying to find Aikawa. Caiman, on the other hand, is trying to find Risu. We see someone attempting to kidnap Shin by drugging him. Can I just say the chandelier with a dozen syringes is so ingenious?? Wow. I remember being amazed watching & reading this part.
Caiman was found by Tanba at the festival. Of course, he gets an earful and a few bonks. Fukuyama gave him some money to buy gyoza. He thinks about Nikaido. All this time, both kidnappers have somehow bumped into him (with their magic brooms) causing him to fall flat to the ground many times and spill his Gyoza. This caused his outrage.
Tanba stood up for Caiman. The kidnappers and Tanba's employees got into a fight. Coincidentally, this saved Shin from getting successfully kidnapped. He continues to sleep soundly inside a body bag. Risu seeks smoke for his mechanical body. He found a warehouse where they are being stored but got distracted by a mysterious storage box. Coincidentally, without knowing, Risu saved Noi. Apparently, one of the kidnappers has placed Noi inside of the box. It has the ability to suppress her healing powers. When the door opened, she healed from her injuries. As her smoke fills the room, Risu also got his body back leaving the mechanical body behind. He escapes the warehouse.
On the second day of Blue Night, Fujita & Ebisu is seen waiting for the person who applied for a partnership with the former. We see Risu buying lucky bags from the gift shop. He disguises himself with a mask. Risu and Caiman eventually crossed paths. They stopped and stared at one another. Back at En's manor, Noi starts searching for Shin. We see a lot of people begging En to be their partners. Sadly, they were turned into mushrooms. LOL. His staff, back from the smoke shop shared the security camera footage with En. En remembers Nikaido from Risu's kidnapping. As he learns about the identity of the time controlling sorcerer, he is adamant about meeting her.
En mentions that the mushrooms he conjures can bloom repeatedly. Since Nikaido was there when his magic went out of control, it could still be on her. En's magic is so interesting and scary OMG. It's only mushrooms but it can be used in different techniques. Asu worries about Nikaido.
Back at Hole, we see the gang hanging out at Hungry Bug. I love how this manga keeps showing us that sorcerers and humans can co-exist. JUST NEED THAT MIDDLE GROUND, MAN. A mushroom grew on Nikaido's back once more and turned into a doll. While everyone panics, Prof Kasukabe remains unfazed. The gang tries to kill it but Dr Vaux was turned into a mushroom. Johnson proves to be a worthy and loyal friend/pet(?) to Prof Kasukabe. Johnson is strong AF TOO! Yay, Johnson! They retreated to Nikaido's bedroom. Thirteen fixed Nikaido with bandages.
Nikaido went into the attic to retrieve her mask, which was revealed to have been made by Asu when she was younger. Masks have the ability to enhance magic power. She successfully defeated the doll but En conjured a portal door to his mansion. They were all taken.
I miss Nikaido and Caiman together so I am thankful for the bonus chapter. Nikaido is teaching Caiman how to cook! So cute!

Kinda read this at the same time as watching the series on Netflix. Huge recommendation at this point btw. The books are pretty hard to come by, it seems. And while there's quite a few extra stories in them, they usually take several weeks to arrive. The anime is a perfect way to get into Dorohedoro, incredibly faithful to the source material and pretty swell overall.
And because this is a review of a book: The book is great, go read it.
The series is not bad at all but for some reason, something is missing. I don't know how to explain it, i'm just not enjoying it the way i wanted to.
The story is good and the characters are amazing, but apparently is not enough for me. The art never convinced me, some panels are difficult to understand (only some). The gore and the comedy are very good, but i just get bored with it.
