As unofficial matchmaker for beautiful Abrigo Island, Zoe Cash practices her own form of no-risk romance. And when Yeager Gates arrives in town for a little R & R, Zoe decides that he'll be her latest project. But the secure world Zoe's created for herself is turned upside-down when she finds herself falling for the sexy fighter pilot.
Yeager's flying days might be over, but spending time on Mother Earth with tantalizing Zoe is putting him back on solid ground. Yeager makes no secret of the fact that his island stay is temporary, but when the time comes will he really be able to leave Zoe behind—for good?
This is a great romance. I love romances that have deeper, serious themes. This one has a pervading theme of past losses and how one chooses to live with the fears caused by those losses. Both of the main characters have their own issues to deal with here and, in each other, they find the comfort and the challenge to face their own demons. I even teared up a few times at their pain. The best of Christie Ridgeway's that I've read yet.
Didn't finish after chapter 2. Ugh why??? Why put in so many stupid romance novel cliches in your story? I seriously wish I could ask this and all other authors who do this why it is that they do it! This could have been a cute, unique and interesting story if it weren't for the stupid, Corny, eye rolling cliches. Such as, when Zoe first sees Yeager from very far away, he gives her all these spine tingly feelings which "is just so out of character for her". And he just illuminates light! Oh brother!! Eye roll! And then, when Yeager meets Zoe for the first time, the author makes sure to have Yeager inner monologue right before about the fact that he hasn't felt turned on by any woman since his accident despite having plenty of opportunity. But then in walks Zoe and guess what?? I'll bet you can guess! Well maybe you can't because I wouldn't have guessed the author would be that obvious but yup. She was. Yeager gets a hard on just by smelling Zoe. Yup. That is seriously what happened. I mean, can you believe it?? After not being able to fee sexual desire for all this time and then all of the sudden in walks Zoe and he miraculously is turned on!! *note my heavy sarcasm. It's just so over the top. So unrealistic. I promise, authors, subtlety goes such a long way!!! You don't need to be so in your face about the romance. Make it real! What is the point of having him be turned on by her immediately? What's the freaking rush?? Anyways I just can't get immersed in this ridiculous and unrealistic story.
I read this for the new Novel Expectations book club and Goodreads Group and didn't really know what to expect. I haven't read much from the romance genre lately and had mixed feelings about it. Sometimes the characters rubbed me the wrong way, which made it difficult to root for them. I thought is was odd that the male main character seemed to care more that his accident had caused him to lose his sex drive than his vision. I tend to enjoy romance books that don't involve a lot of graphic sex scenes. This one did have some, but it wasn't overdone. There actually wasn't any until about two thirds through the book. There were some moments and some lingo that I though was a bit cringy. But maybe it's just because I don't read a lot of romance books of this type. I did enjoy the premise and thought that it wrapped up with a satisfactory ending.
The characters start off kind of off-putting. Zoey is a failed match maker, She has apparently engineered ten matches, none of which has survived the first year. Yet she intends to keep at it. It wasn’t until she stopped matchmaking that she became remotely tolerable. Yeager starts off relatable in how he reacts given what he’s going through. However it’s not very attractive that he fully intended to use Zoey to make himself feel better and then leave her behind. So they end up happy together and that’s nice, but the first half of the story kind of undermines the happy ending.
Enjoyable tale with a hero who's recovering from a bad motorcycle accident and a heroine who's clinging to her island home as the only place she can feel safe. Both of the characters are well rounded and interesting, and they have a great connection together. A subplot about her sister and his friend helps to round out the book. I felt like the setup was unique and the author took advantage of the circumstances the characters are in. All in all, a fun read.
This book is at least in the top three books I have read this year. (I read at least one a day). It is a great read that manages to tell two love stories without skimping on either. It also shares a look at an island community that supports each other in a way that people rarely do in this hooked up, turned on technology age. I would love to read more stories from this community.
Sexy. Handsome. Totally all man. Astronaut Yeager Gates was all that as well as a very broken man. Having been in a motorcycle accident which rendered his blind due to head trauma, Yeager wasn't ready to face his the loss of his career and life. How does one heal from such pain and loss? One simply runs away. Or does he?
I hated this book, and am mad at myself for finishing it. Yaeger was a domineering womanizer who can't imagine that life won't go the way he wants it, nor that any woman actually doesn't want him, so he doesn't take no for an answer. Zoe is a control-freak, and yet a doormat when she thinks someone needs her. I liked Zeke and Lissy's story more than Yaeger and Zoe.
The Amazon blurb on the book didn't prepare me for the laughter I was going to have while reading this. Ridgway writes some very witty dialogue that I just adore! This is a funny, charming, witty, sexy and fantastic read. I love her writing style, not only witty but smart and engrossing. Characters are well written and entertaining. Just downloaded another of her books!
This is a great story about hopes, dreams and pure determination of all the characters in it. You can picture the island, the people, and the fish. Small village living at its finest.
A sweet love story and I love the characters some spicy scenes not suitable for teens , the setting was beautiful, and the author did a good job making you feel like you were there on the beach. I recommend this book to mature readers.
This is a unique, emotional book. The characters are believable, the plot gives us real life issues and the writing is uniquely Christie Ridgway's. The book involves 2 sisters and 2 best friends who overcome their own issues to find HEA.
A quick read with an original plot and characters who did not always seem realistic but sometimes tended toward cliches. Had to skim a few pages of sexual descriptions.
