In the past 500 years, the Zuni peoples’ names of places and their meanings have been remapped and eliminated from mainstream use. This direct denial of Zuni history has led to the creation of 31 fine art paintings by Zuni artists, which speak to the artists’ continuous search for the essence of Zuni, and serve as learning tools for their community. These works tell us that map art can persuade people to look at the world as a cultural landscape, rather than simply a physical entity.
A reverent exploration of Zuni ancestral lands and culture, through the paintings of 16 Zuni artists and the Zuni Map Art project. Through this project, the artists visited and studied Zuni ancestral landmarks, and created artistic maps inspired by the history and culture and energies embedded in the land. These maps were then shared with the Zuni community, to raise awareness of Zuni culture and perspectives.
Included in this book are reproductions of several of these paintings, and reflections from the Zuni artists and their cultural advisors. The artists were clearly inspired and empowered by exploring the places of their ancestors, and that these maps can help others to gain insights on the history and sacredness of these special places.
