Immortal Executioners

Over a millennium ago, Highlander Darach MacRath was murdered. Resurrected by the Archangel Michael to fight demons as an Immortal Executioner, Darach now opposes all evil in the mortal world. His life is solitary—but when he rescues a young woman who not only sees demons but battles them herself, he is captivated by her courage and beauty.

Abigail Dupree is not looking for love. But when a tall, dark demon fighter with a sexy brogue intervenes in her hunt, she’s fascinated. She should run away—but then his gentle yet sizzling touch ensnares her heart.

When a demon from Darach’s past sets his sights on Abby, Darach will do anything to protect her—but for Abby, losing him would be worse than death. Together they must fight the demons of past and present, and the possibility that evil could destroy them both, before they find the gift of love.

Excerpt:

“Ye willna be needing a weapon, I will protect ye.”

His statement irritated Abby, but at the same time a part of her was just a tiny bit thrilled. It seemed immortal or not, a man always had the attitude of protecting the little woman—whether they needed it or not. Of course to be fair, he had saved her butt from the demon, but he needed to know she wasn’t some frightened babe in the woods.

“I beg to differ. If I’d had a knife I could have done some serious damage, and besides, you can’t protect me twenty-four-seven, Darach.”

“Ye will be protected at all times, Abby.”

“You’re missing the point. Maybe I don’t need a keeper. I have managed to take care of myself for over…” Abby decided he didn’t really have to know she was over thirty. “And what about when you’re asleep? You do sleep don’t you?”

Darach frowned, but answered, “Aye, I do sleep, but ’tis usually during the daylight hours. However now I will be sleeping at night in your bed with ye.”

"Mortals lived in a world of fantasy, sin and hope. For those who cried out for help, it was Michael's job to do all he could to keep them safe until they made a choice of commitment to grace or not. A job that became harder and harder every millennium."

After the death of his family, Darach has been chosen by the archangel Michael to become an immortal with a mission. Even though Darach would rather be reunited in death with his family he has been sent to destroy the demons and the evil mortals of the world, to become a seeker of justice. After decades of training Darach has been sent to modern day New Orleans and is seeking to prevent crimes and save souls if possible. He's also looking for revenge for the demon Angus who killed him and his family.

Abby is trying to support her self after her grandmothers passing by working in a club as a singer at night. Days are spent working in a school. She is gifted with visions in a way that she is able to recognize the demons that roam New Orleans. A fateful night brings Darach and Abby together. To protect her, Michael orders Darach to stay by her side. Will they be able to resist each other even though Michael has ordered Darach to tend to business? There is an attraction that neither can deny.

Darach and his detective friend Sean are in search of Angus. They must find him before Angus finds Darach and possibly Abbie. Filled with friendship and courtship, love and battles of demons that roam the streets. Will Darach continue to walk the earth or will he be reunited in death with his beloved family? Will Abbie fit into this life of an immortal, or will she have to find another path without him?

This is not my usual genre but I was quickly drawn in. The author has the ability to write in a way that captures your attention and mesmerizes you. Fast paced so that you want to keep going to find out whats next. You know the kind of book you think you'll just read one more page? I found myself awake at 4am. I did look up the word "Highlander" because I was unfamiliar with this genre. Laugh if you must. That's what reading is about is it not? Learning new things. So I found out that Highlander means: a person from the Scottish Highlands. So that explains that accent as Darach spoke throughout the book!

What a great ending! I can't say more but I loved this story and I loved the way the last few pages made me feel about the entire book.

Thank you Faith V. Smith for this copy to read and giving me a chance to love a new book.

Undeniably reminiscent of the first few books in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series. The setting and premise are essentially the same: Ancient warrior is betrayed and slaughtered in a sufficiently horrific manner, resurrected by the badass demi-god servant/general of an actual god, and agrees to become a broody, demon-hunting immortal soldier for a millennium or so. While stationed in New Orleans, immortal meets somehow-special mortal woman and falls hopelessly in-lust. Immortal must protect his new woman from: [insert sociopathic, demonically-inspired threat here]

The book offers a meticulous conveyance of detail. But unfortunately, a great deal of the detailing doesn't seem relevant or contribute to moving the plot along. By the end, this reviewer was left with the impression that 1/4th of the word count could be excised without any detriment to the story. (I suspect it would actually benefit the pacing.)

The book starts out on a rough note with an infanticide and rape scene, which the reader is then fed again through somewhat forced dialogue within the first 45 pages. There is an excessive use of adjectives, and the transitions drag along at the speed of bureaucracy. Needless repetitions, cliches, and consistent wordiness slowed the pace and lessened the overall impact.

Characterization was also a bit weak. The villain's POV was flat, his motives of vengeance and entitlement never truly explained. The heroine, Abby, was difficult to connect with or care for—coming across as childish, stubborn, dimwitted, and touting a whopper of a death-wish. (i.e. She has the ability to see demons, but all she carries around to combat them is an ineffective can of mace. And despite her experience with the supernatural, she has an oddly difficult time believing Darach is an immortal being--even after seeing him appear out of nowhere, effortlessly slay a demon, and then disappear with her in tow.) Darach is a promising hero, but ultimately, he doesn't stand out among the Celtic warrior archetype. His Scottish brogue is all fine-and-sexy in the dialogue, but to muddle through it in the narrative as well felt tedious and unnecessary.

This story centers around Darach (an ancient Scot turned immortal to battle evil demons) and Abby (modern New Orleans woman with a stubborn streak), but my favorite character in the book was actually the Archangel Michael. I absolutely loved his little quotes and writings at the beginning of each chapter. And I absolutely loved the gifts he bestowed toward the end of the book. Can’t tell you what they were as that will give something away, but they were perfect. Sean, the half-demon/half-human NOLA cop was also an interesting character. And his constant bickering with Arianna—another immortal working for Michael—led me to believe there’s going to be a story for them in the future. I’d love to see where that one goes! Overall, the story was reminiscent of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series, but not as hot (thank goodness!). Plus, the immortals in this one actually like Michael (and so do I).

Things I didn’t like: there were some minor editorial issues that caught me off guard. Some misspellings and POV switches. Minor, but they caught my eye. And the beginning(murder of a baby, rape, and more)… that really put me off, but I continued on and am glad I did.

Recommendation: If you’re looking for a paranormal romance with a HEA that satisfies and relatively low heat levels, definitely pick this one up. I enjoyed it and I’m sure you will too.

This was a tale of good vs. evil in its purest form.

Darach was as easy for me to fall for as he was for Abby. His out-of-this-world body and his sexy Scottish brogue made him almost irresistible. The awful things that happened to him in his previous life broke my heart. Abby with her “gift” and willingness to help others had me rooting for her from the first page.

The characters were well developed. I loved Michael the Archangel. His concern for the mortals on earth as well as for his Immortal Warriors made him very real to me. Sean had a really intriguing back story that made me want to know more about him. Arianna’s feisty and smart. I know she has a deep dark secret that I’m dying to know.

I was impressed by Ms. Smith’s story telling. Abby and Darach’s verbal sparring was entertaining. There were heart breaking and heart pounding moments. It reminded me of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series but with less sex and the immortals worked for a boss they actually respected. There were some slow moments but over all this was a great read.

The Christian aspects of this book were heartfelt. Even the passion that Darach and Abby had for each other was sweet and pure.

Favorite Quote: Reminder: Archangels do not shed tears over what happens in the mortal realm. It would be fruitless since he would never get any work done if he allowed his hardened shell to crack. As he reached for a golden cloth and wiped his eyes, he repeated, archangels do not shed tears.

I really enjoyed the portrayal of the archangel. Although Michael has the ability to make things better in the blink of an eye, God prevents him from doing so. Even an archangel is meant to listen to God's word and wait things out. This closely mimics every day life with mortal man. People struggle with difficulties in their lives and they question the powers that be. When all is taken into account, things must all fall into place. No matter how dire the price, it still must be paid. My father passed awhile back. We had a difficult time for a long while but in the end we bonded stronger than before. Regardless of how difficult that road was, I would never take it back. The events and how they played out chart the course for the future. So, therefore, I felt a connection to this book and I am glad to have come across it. In addition, I love black sheep and can't wait to read more about Sean in this series. He's what I would call the "black sheep" or the challenged hero. He has a past which is tainted and that gives him even more of a challenge than your typical hero. Can't wait for the next book!
