About the author

Romain Gary was a Jewish-French novelist, film director, World War II aviator and diplomat. He also wrote under the pen name Émile Ajar .

Born Roman Kacew (Yiddish: קצב, Russian: Кацев), Romain Gary grew up in Vilnius to a family of Lithuanian Jews. He changed his name to Romain Gary when he escaped occupied France to fight with Great Britain against Germany in WWII. His father, Arieh-Leib Kacew, abandoned his family in 1925 and remarried. From this time Gary was raised by his mother, Nina Owczinski. When he was fourteen, he and his mother moved to Nice, France. In his books and interviews, he presented many different versions of his father's origin, parents, occupation and childhood.

He later studied law, first in Aix-en-Provence and then in Paris. He learned to pilot an aircraft in the French Air Force in Salon-de-Provence and in Avord Air Base, near Bourges. Following the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, he fled to England and under Charles de Gaulle served with the Free French Forces in Europe and North Africa. As a pilot, he took part in over 25 successful offensives logging over 65 hours of air time.

He was greatly decorated for his bravery in the war, receiving many medals and honors.

After the war, he worked in the French diplomatic service and in 1945 published his first novel. He would become one of France's most popular and prolific writers, authoring more than thirty novels, essays and memoirs, some of which he wrote under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar. He also wrote one novel under the pseudonym of Fosco Sinibaldi and another as Shatan Bogat.

In 1952, he became secretary of the French Delegation to the United Nations in New York, and later in London (in 1955).

In 1956, he became Consul General of France in Los Angeles.

He is the only person to win the Prix Goncourt twice. This prize for French language literature is awarded only once to an author. Gary, who had already received the prize in 1956 for Les racines du ciel , published La vie devant soi under the pseudonym of Émile Ajar in 1975. The Académie Goncourt awarded the prize to the author of this book without knowing his real identity. A period of literary intrigue followed. Gary's little cousin Paul Pavlowitch posed as the author for a time. Gary later revealed the truth in his posthumous book Vie et mort d'Émile Ajar .

Gary's first wife was the British writer, journalist, and Vogue editor Lesley Blanch (author of The Wilder Shores of Love ). They married in 1944 and divorced in 1961. From 1962 to 1970, Gary was married to the American actress Jean Seberg, with whom he had a son, Alexandre Diego Gary.

He also co-wrote the screenplay for the motion picture, The Longest Day and co-wrote and directed the 1971 film Kill! , starring his now ex-wife Seberg.

Suffering from depression after Seberg's 1979 suicide, Gary died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on December 2, 1980 in Paris, France though he left a note which said specifically that his death had no relation with Seberg's suicide.

Нощта е или пък не е изпълнила Обещанието на зората. Но при всички случаи ще бъде спокойна в този монолог под формата на въпроси и отговори. Ромен пита и Гари отговаря.

Франция като представа. Животът като абсурд, в който голата действителност убива, ако ги няма поезията и фантазията. Несправедливостта ще шества в пространства, в които хуморът е предаден в ръцете на палача. А нито минало, нито бъдеще - още по-малко пък настояще - имат смисъл без любов.

Между сенките на тези представи шестват генерал дьо Гол, дипломатите на Ке Д’Орсе, холивудските звезди и Париж на апапите и изискаността. Обединяващата нишка е честността, съчетана с леки финтове на словесността, на които дори един Ромен Гари не може да устои. А и той не го иска.

Не знаех, че книгата е интервю или по-скоро беседа между Франсоа Бонди (приятел още от детството на писателя) и Ромен Гари. Повечето неща се въртят около дипломатическата кариера на Гари, споделя любопитни неща. Говори за убийственото лицемерие в тези среди (разбира се, нищо изненадващо), което съперничи на киносредите в Холивуд. Аз-ът - издигнат в култ до умопомрачение, мачизма ... В някои моменти Гари отговаря чисто дипломатично, така че нищо да не каже, в други дори повишава тон (съдейки по коментарите на Бонди). Особено чувствителен е към темата за превръщането на жената в клишето "Жена" и експлоатацията на това клише. Мисля, че това го е карало да побеснява.
Все повече затвръждавам мнението си, че има нещо прекрасно детско в Гари.

"Нощта ще бъде спокойна!" е казвал всеки път преди полет приятел на Гари. Един ден, така и не се завръща ...

Без да търси хронологична последователност, Гари се втурва с рогата (зодиакална препратка ли направих?!) напред и възкресява за нас един сякаш отдавна изчезнал свят – всъщност съществувал само малко над половин век назад. Пише с много плам за Студената война и световното разделение, критикува системите и от двете страни на Желязната завеса, проследява как Франция се променя и постепенно губи своя автентичен облик: “Френските ръце си бяха същинска цивилизация, докато не се появиха джобовете. Днес страната се състои от джобове, които трябва да се тъпчат и издуват с цел да станат още по-натъпкани и издути…”. Писателят без свян скача от глобални теми като капитализма и корупцията като негово “естествено продължение” до много лични като например секса на преклонна възраст, за който лукаво настоява, че нямало да издаде кое и как. Връща се пак и пак към романите си, говори за срещите си с различни хора, които е превърнал сетне в литературния персонажи, а на едно място с печал описва как, след като печели “Гонкур” за “Корените на небето”, започнал да получава развълнувани писма от читатели, в които имало… фигурки на слонове от слонова кост. А в един миг поспира и казва със смазваща прямота:

Осем часа в офиса и два часа път не могат да бъдат никаква житейска тема, те са погребална церемония.

“Qu’est-ce que c’était, le bonheur, pour toi”? Ik zit op de achterbank en deel een paar oortjes met mijn lief, in mijn rechterhand hou ik La nuit sera calme vast, mijn linkerhand maak ik alleen maar vrij uit haar grip om de pagina’s om te draaien. Af en toe lees ik bewust trager om dat moment te kunnen uitstellen. Er liggen nog 1500 kilometers voor ons, naar Warsaw, toevallig een stad waar Romain Gary nog gewoond heeft. Ik heb nog 1500 kilometer en 200 pagina’s om haar verklaringen te vragen voor de Franse woorden die ik niet ken, ze antwoordt meestal “niemand gebruikt dat woord”, of “het is een andere manier om te zeggen dat je slecht gezind bent”. Ik ga met mijn duim over de sproeten op haar knokels, ze legt haar hoofd op mijn schouder en ik tel tot ze zachtjes snurkt.

Entretien publié en 1974 ponctué d'anecdotes intéressantes et sur la vie professionnelle de Romain Gary ( diplomatie, écriture de romans et pour le cinema) j'ai beaucoup aimé les parties où il parle de ses œuvres, de ses influences, de ses personnages comme le "picaro", le besoin de la parodie, de la "quête du merveilleux " car :
" le cinéma, c'est comme un filet à papillons, comme le roman, comme la vie vécue."
Les parties sur la politique, (par exemple son analyse de l'Europe dans les 70' , sa relation avec De Gaulle et le gaullisme ), qui sont majoritaires, m' ont moins intéressées et j'avoue avoir lu la certains passages en diagonale.
Ne pas s'attendre à un entretien purement littéraire mais à un condensé d'événements marquants de sa vie accompagné d' analyses du monde politique ou culturel avec de grands noms évoqués.

Romain Gary n'a pas été un homme heureux. Assoiffé d'absolu, idéaliste et batailleur, le verbe toujours prêt à pourfendre les revers et les illusions de la nature humaine, les siens d'abord, ceux des autres ensuite. Il a fait le tour de la planète en quête du moindre signe des mystères de la Vie avec un grand V, amoureux de toutes les manifestations des vertus féminines qui à son avis sont les seules qui peuvent sauver le monde du machisme à grande échelle. Par ses propos enflammés et dubitatifs, il me fait penser à Don Quichotte en super héros imperméable au ridicule, lui qui pourtant n'échappe pas une seconde à une sensibilité exacerbée ni aux perpétuels tiraillements de sa conscience. Comment arrive-t-on à survivre au génie qui nous hante ou à vivre avec, tout simplement ?

Délicieux. Une version plus élaborée du livre « Le sens de ma vie » par le même auteur. J’aurais aimé que l’entretien décousu dure encore plus longtemps et m’a donné envie de lire Romain Gary encore et encore.

It's always interesting how one comes across a book or an author. In the case of Romain Gary, I was curious about him after reading very flattering references in Pumpkinflowers, by Matti Friedman - he mentioned particularly Les Cerfs-Volants, so this was the first Romain Gary book I read, and I was hooked. He's a wonderful writer, and his book La Vie Devant Soi, written under the pseudonym Émile Ajar, is one of the books that moved me the most in the last few years.

La Nuit sera calme is a kind of a long interview, des entretiens, as they say in French, and in it Romain Gary comes across as an extremely intelligent, interesting and sensible man of the 20th century, from a time and place when French culture was still at its best. It shows how sound political thinking and honest morals are timeless, and it somehow gives us some hope - as long as there are intelligent and committed people there is still some hope...

La vraie valeur n’a jamais rien à craindre de ces mises à l’épreuve par le sarcasme et la parodie, par le défi et par l’acide, et toute personnalité politique qui a de la stature et de l’authenticité sort indemne de ces agressions. La vraie morale n’a rien à redouter de la pornographie – pas plus que les hommes politiques, qui ne sont pas des faux-monnayeurs, de Charlie Hebdo, du Canard enchaîné, de Daumier ou de Jean Yanne. Bien au contraire: s’ils sont vrais, cette mise à l’épreuve par l’acide leur est toujours favorable. La dignité n’est pas quelque chose qui interdit l’irrespect: elle a au contraire besoin de cet acide pour révéler son authenticité.

L’O.N.U. a été dévorée par le cancer nationaliste. Le nationalisme, surtout quand il est jeune, frais et pimpant, c’est d’abord le droit de disposer sans appel d’un peuple – par tyrannie intérieure – au nom du droit des peuples à disposer d’eux-mêmes. C’est le droit de couper les mains ou le clitoris des filles, de lapider les femmes adulteres, de fusiller, d’exterminer, de torturer, au nom du droit du peuple à disposer de lui-même. Tu peux faire tuer un million d’hommes à l’intérieur des frontières de ton pays et siéger aux Nations Unies à la Commission des Droits de l’homme, monter à la tribune de l’Assemblée générale et prononcer un discours sur la liberte, l’égalité et la fraternité et te faire acclamer, parce que les affaires intérieures d’un État, c’est sacré.

Sur le plan de la réalité seule, l’homme, enfin, c’est indiscernable, parce que toutes les notions de fraternité, de démocratie, de liberte, sont des valeurs de convention, on n eles reçoit pas de la nature, ce sont des décisions, des choix, des proclamations d’imaginaire auxquelles solvente on sacrifie sa vie pour leur donner vie.
Ces rapports “chien sans maître” avec Dieu ou avec l’absence de Dieu, que Dieu soit ressentit comme une préférence ou comme un manque, sont toujours des rapports avec un collier et une laisse qui me sont totalement étrangers.

Non è affatto un libro semplice. La vita multiforme di Gary viene passata al vaglio dall'amico Bondy, in una lunga intervista che va a toccare tutta la varietà di esperienze di vita dell'autore: politica, viaggi, sesso, religione, morale, amore, guerra, segreti, idee.
È una lettura corposa, che presume una conoscenza - anche minima - della realtà dal Dopoguerra agli anni 70, di alcuni suoi personaggi e fatti, per emergere in tutta la sua incisività. Gary risponde alle domande dell'interlocutore con schiettezza e ironia, gettando sul piatto della notte i suoi trascorsi, senza risparmiare frecciate e amarezze che un sessantenne com'era lui all'epoca poteva esprimere con profonda cognizione di causa.
Condivisibili o meno, molte sue idee sono tutt'oggi - a quarant'anni di distanza - di stringente attualità e brutale realismo.

The author is interviewed by by a French journalist, Francois Bondy, in 1974. He was born in 1914 in Vilnius w/ the given name of Romain Kacew. He was raised by his doting mother, who had a very difficult time supporting him at times. When he was 14 they moved to Nice, France.
He has written numerous books under the name of Romain Gary and also several under the pseudoyme, Emile Ajar, which was discovered posthumously.
He won the "prix Goncourt" for his novels several times.
His style is "rude and poetique."

Je découvre un peu tard Romain Gary (avec les racines du Ciel il y a 2 ans) et je suis mordu - Grace a La Nuit Sera Calme, je crois que je connais beaucoup mieux cet homme extrêmement intéressant. C’était un peu comme lisant Eastern Approaches de Fitzroy Maclean - une autre de mes bouquin préférés. Je l'aurai bien amie l'avoir autour de la table.

De belles anecdotes et beaucoup de vécu, cependant la lecture est un peu lourde (presque pas de paragraphes) et la politique n'est plus aussi pertinente.

J'ai l'impression qu'avec le temps, plusieurs aspects abordés ne seront plus du tout d'actualité.

Il s'agit là d'une vie et de multiples carrières rocambolesques, par contre, Gary m'est souvent apparu comme hautain et m'a laissé avec le sentiment d'avoir façonné à son avantage certains passages.

Lecture assez difficile, mais très intéressante. Il aurait fallu que j’aille lu une grande majorité des livres écrits par Romain Garry et que je sois beaucoup mieux éduqué sur les événements du 20iem siècle afin de pouvoir vraiment savourer ce livre au maximum.
Cependant, les parties que j’ai pu comprendre était très intéressante. Visionnaire pour le féminisme et la politique de son époque était Romain.

Strutturata in forma di intervista, "La notte sarà calma" (1974) è l'autobiografia del Romain Gary maturo (quanto ad età); precedentemente, nel 1960, Gary aveva pubblicato "La promessa dell'alba", la splendida autobiografia più giovanile. Il grande lituano-francese enfatizza qui la poliedricità vulcanica che lo caratterizza: oltre che scrittore, in quarta di copertina è definito giustamente anche "seduttore, aviatore, diplomatico, ebreo, patriota, cineasta", dunque "uomo smisurato e geniale"; "La notte sarà calma" è pertanto un'autobiografia particolarmente fitta, a tratti interessante, a tratti stancante.

Ромен Гари - искусный манипулятор и повелитель читательских душ. А я ведь знал, что его "Но��ь будет спокойной" - это не то, что есть на самом деле. Но без тени сомнения и борьбы следовал за автором через юность, взросление, общественную деятельность и другие приключения. Особенно интересным для меня было знакомство с миром политики в правдивой и беспристрастной "исповеди" политика. Миром, где всё держится на людях: слабых и сильных, хитрых и бесхитростных (которых меньше), дерзких и спокойных. В этих рассуждениях Гари наиболее понятен, наиболее открыт. Довольно интересными представляются и его мысли о феминности, хотя в отдельных моментах мне хотелось вступить в диалог (вот и повод почитать "Обещание на рассвете"). Книга, в целом, оставила приятное впечатление, хотя, обычно, такого рода литература навевает на меня скуку и апатию. Спасибо, Ромен Гари, за честность. И юмор. Куда же без него.

Ça reste du Romain Gary donc c’est bien écrit et son style quand on aime est toujours aussi agréable. Mais ce n’est pas son meilleur livre.
Je conseillerai en premier Chien blanc ou la Promesse de l’aube.

Leggere Romain Gary mette di buon umore proprio come il pensiero di passare una serata con una compagnia di amici fraterni; a volte, è umano, capita che l'amico con cui pensavi di intavolare una bella discussione non sia in forma, e la serata si trascina un po' stancamente. Questo non è un romanzo ma una sorta di intervista-fiume con momenti interessanti e divertenti, alternati a pagine di opinioni politiche e discussioni di fatti ormai passati d'attualità (l'intervista risale al 1975), con varie parti francamente piuttosto noiose. Ma glielo si perdona volentieri, alla fine, perchè il suo caratteristico tono sornione fa capolino in molte pagine e salva un libro poco interessante. Avrei preferito che l'editore NeriPozza sacrificasse quest'opera in favore di qualche suo romanzo irreperibile, tipo "Addio Gary Cooper" o "La danza di Gengis Cohn", per esempio.
