This is the book collection of the third year of strips from November 2012 to October 2013. This includes new commentary, behind-the-scenes artwork, and character designs into an 196-page tome with luxurious glossy paper all bound up into a sturdy presentation. And there's a foreword by Magnolia Porter, writer and artist of Monster Pulse.
David Willis is no stranger to the world of webcomics, having started his first series, Roomies!, in 1997. Including Roomies!, he has five webcomics series under his belt, such as the sci-fi drama It’s Walky!, its more domestic sequel Joyce and Walky!, Shortpacked!, a look at action figures and pop culture, and Dumbing of Age, a story about college freshman. In 2005, he and other leading cartoonists formed the webcomics collective Blank Label Comics.
Raised in La Porte, Indiana, David Willis graduated from the Illinois Institute of Art in Schaumburg, Illinois with a Bachelor in Fine Arts. After college, he escaped the frighteningly-empty cornfields and hicks of Indiana to the frighteningly-empty cornfields and hicks of Ohio.
David Willis currently resides with his wife Maggie in Columbus, Ohio, where he surrounds himself with more Transformers toys than he can bother to count.
Cant. Stop. Reading! Much more drama and character development in this one, things that have been set in motion before actually start going somewhere in this installment. Some of which being a little close to home in a way.
Great stuff in this volume. The parents' day arc in particular was great, with Joyce actually standing up to her fundie parents in favor of acceptance of Dorothy.
This volume feels like it treads water for the first couple of arcs. The characters are great, but the strip is just growing into the plots of its previous volumes. However, the last arc, with its parent-visit day, is terrific. It really helps these characters showcase themselves and their comics.
I am increasingly impressed with Willis' ability to tell continuing stories and give them a punch within the constraints of these short comics.
