La joven del pelo rojo

Rate this book
A gripping and timely debut novel by award-winning writer Buzzy Jackson, based on the true story of Hannie Schaft: a heroic young Dutch woman who joined the Resistance in Holland during World War II and became one of the Nazis' most wanted women

Hannie Schaft, a shy law student living in Nazi-occupied Holland, never dreamed of being a fighter. But when the lives of Hannie's two Jewish best friends are threatened in new and terrifying ways, she realizes she can no longer ignore the insidious rise of fascism in her country. Driven by moral outrage, Hannie becomes an armed member of the Dutch Resistance movement.

Hannie discovers her own untapped ferocity--wearing lipstick and heels to lure powerful Nazis close and assassinate them at point-blank range, bombing munitions factories, and becoming such a threat that Adolf Hitler himself dubs her the Girl with Red Hair. While humanity collapses around her, Hannie finds a chosen family of friends within the Resistance and falls in love with a dashing fellow resistor at a tremendous cost. Her greatest weapon is her determination to stay human (blijf altijd menselijk) . . . a promise increasingly difficult to keep.

To Die Beautiful is an unputdownable novel of love, loyalty, and the limits we confront when our deepest values are tested, told with the emotional resonance of meticulously researched history.

“Hannie, Hannie. Het meisje met het rode haar” Hannie Shaft, The Girl with the Red Hair. This is her story, of how she joins the Dutch Resistance and becomes so notorious she’s added to Hitlers most wanted list. In this excellent debut, Buzzy Jackson weaves fact with fiction to bring Hannie alive.

I have heard of Hannie Shaft and know something about the Dutch Resistance but feel I have a greater understanding now. The author has conducted some phenomenal and painstaking research in order to produce a heartbreaking story of sheer courage and bravery that is awe inspiring. There’s no doubt Hannie lives on her wits and has more guts than most but her portrayal here really does make her feel human as at times she is understandably fearful as danger and the possibility of betrayal is all around. The author really captures life under a Nazi yoke with all the hardships, the deprivation, the horrors and the cruelty which never ceases to shock to the core. The deteriorating situation is depicted vividly and the tension is palpable. The ending makes me want to weep - heroes all and I and many others salute you. The afterword is well worth reading too.

So, if you are a fan of Historical Fiction then this is a must read or if you want to understand more about the Dutch Resistance and Hannie in particular, then this is your book as the author does a fine job.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Penguin Michael Joseph for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Author Buzzy Jackson’s meticulous research has resulted in this outstanding and unforgettable account of the life of Dutch Resistance fighter and Dutch national heroine, Hannie Schaft.

Hannie was a young student studying law in Amsterdam when Holland was invaded by the Nazis in 1940. Hannie had no strong political convictions but had always respected people who stood up for truth and for doing the right thing - standing up for their beliefs.

When the University of Amsterdam’s staff and students were required to sign a document swearing allegiance to the Reich, Hannie withdrew from university rather than pledge loyalty to the Nazi regime. As the Nazis strengthened their hold on the people of Holland and deportations began, Hannie then became involved in the Dutch Resistance movement.

Ms. Jackson’s well written and heart wrenching book brings wartime Holland to life as Hannie and other resistance fighters strive to fight back against the fascist regime.

This inspiring book, based on true events, is hard to put down. It is a testament to courage, loyalty, love, and the will to stay human amidst a world of hatred and inhumanity.

The Afterword and Author’s Note at the end of the book add to the content as well. To Die Beautiful was the winner of the Colorado Book Award for Historical Fiction as well as a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award in 2023.

Short Review: Brave. Beautiful. Badass.

"I was beginning to notice a new pattern of behavior. Two people make eye contact. One of them is wearing a yellow star. The other notices the star, then drops their gaze to the ground and keeps walking. Whether it's because they are embarrassed or ashamed or disgusted, it doesn't matter, because the result is the same: they stop looking at Jews. Which means they stop seeing them. And when you stop seeing something, it no longer exists."

Long Review: This book opened up a whole new aspect of WWII history for me. Before reading it, I didn't know very much about the Dutch resistance movement or Hannie Schaft and her role in resisting the Nazi's. The author did a phenomenal job mixing history and fiction to bring Hannie's inspiring story to life. I absolutely loved the historical notes and afterward in this book. It really helped bring everything into perspective.

A fictional story based on the real life experiences of Dutch war hero Hannie Schaft during World War II, it was truly a privilege to read To Die Beautiful. The tender care and research that went into creating this story was incredible. The bravery of the good people during that time…awe inspiring and beyond words, honestly. The best historical war novel I’ve read since The Nightingale.

What a book. An easy 5 stars from me. I felt equally heartbroken and uplifted finishing this novel. A stunning debut showcasing the best of WWII historical fiction. Based largely on the true story of Hannie Schaft, Jackson expertly guides us through the resistance movement in Holland, portraying both the devastation of the war and the Holocaust juxtaposed with the bravery and courage of resistance fighters, especially the female resistance movement.

The book is really well paced and kept me fully engaged throughout. Jackson’s writing style and evident thorough research immersed me fully in 1940s Holland and I felt fully invested in the stories of the characters. It is however difficult to read in some in some places, I found the stories of children particularly harrowing.

I am a big historical fiction fan and this is defining my favourite HF of 2023 so far. Can’t wait to read more by this author.

Big thanks to the published and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Buzzy Jackson's "To Die Beautiful" is a historical fiction novel about the Dutch resister, Hannie Schaft. Schaft was a young woman when war came to her doorstep and she didn't hesitate to get involved and do something to help. I am always interested in stories about World War II, especially untold stories. I enjoyed the story, but it did feel a little long in certain places. The last 1/3 of the novel is when it really kicks into high gear. And please do not skip the author's note at the end.

A gripping, beautifully written story full of compassion, loyalty, bravery and love.
This is a difficult one to review as it’s based on real life events and is harrowing and emotional. I’d never heard of Hannie Schafer before reading this story and am full of admiration for Buzzy Jackson for bringing her story to life. Hannie’s strength and attitude was amazing and I loved seeing her come to life in the pages.
This is more than just about Hannie though - we are also treated to other strong and fearless women who alongside Hannie worked to make the persecuted under the Nazi regime feel a little bit safer. Their strength and humanity was something to be celebrated and I loved getting to know Truus and Freddie, Philine and Sonja too.
I’ve buddy read this with Lucy and we both agreed how much we’ve learnt and how much we admire what Hannie stood for, what she fought for and her resistance work with Truus and Freddie was simply awe inspiring.
A beautiful and emotional story which will stay with me for a long time.

This book was wonderfully written and historically accurate which I loved! The characters are also mostly compromised of real life resistance workers and the Nazis they encountered along the way of their journey. There were just a few things that are personally triggering for me (animal abuse/cruelty, children abuse/death, and infidelity) but overall a really solid WW2 novel that I picked up!

Perhaps I have been inundated with WWIi accounts that speak about resistance, the horrific holocaust experience, and the people involved in all aspects of the war. I was hoping for something different, something unique, something…unpredictable. Unfortunately, I felt this account to be similar to so many others, and while their story needs to be told, catalogued, and relayed so as not to repeat this dark side of history, I didn’t feel like this one stood apart from the hundreds of others, and as such, failed to grab me. Still, it’s a part of our past that should never be forgotten, and I applaud the writer for keeping the tradition of recounting the Dutch resistance amidst the fear and brutality of the Nazis.

Took me a whole week to figure out that the US title is different, but I love the title "The girl with the red hair"!
This is easily one of my favourite historic novels I have read so far. It is my first time reading about Hannie Schaft, and wow, what a strong woman she was.I love how her character is brought to light in the story with her selflessness shining through. I thought the setting in the Netherlands was well represented because I was googling all the places mentioned. Some of the parts are hard to read because of the horrific brutality that takes place.

I'm going to go ahead and call To Die Beautiful the most underrated book on bookstagram right now.

I haven't seen a single review of it yet, and that's a shame. Because this book is a powerful testament to one women's fight against fascism and hate.

Here's the thing: the first 100 pages are slow. The author takes her time establishing how and why Hannie went from a quiet law student to a fierce Dutch assassin during World War 2. There's a lot of character building. If you pick this up (and you should), I insist you read through chapter 13. I know that's a lot. I give you permission to skim or even message me for a summary.

Because once this picks up, it's one of the best books I've ever read about women in the resistance. And I've read A LOT of those books (it's definitely been a trend lately). So many of them have the women be approached by a stranger and agree to join within two minutes of dialogue. Their spy work never seems dangerous, and they just suddenly become famous. Not here. Hannie doesn't trust anyone (as she shouldn't), and they don't trust her. It has to be earned. And she does everything in her power to stay hidden because of the danger if they discover who she is.

One of the most amazing parts of this book is that it is based on a real woman who actually assassinated powerful Nazis and bombed their factories. Her parents are real, her friends are real, her fellow members of the resistance are real, and the men she killed are real.

Intense and devastating, this book is not for the faint of heart. The cruelty of the Nazis is on full display. But we also see the courage of those who stood against them. By the end of the book, I was simultaneously heart-broken and full of hope. Hannie Schaft is a woman to be admired, and if you don't know who she is (and you probably), pick this book up now. 4.5 stars

Thank you Dutton for my copy of the book!

i might have to come back to rewrite this review in the light of day because it's 1:30 AM and this book hit me like a TRUCK.

this is an unbelievable account of an extraordinary woman, hannie schaft, who was a key part of the dutch resistance against the nazis in WWII. i am blown away at how buzzy jackson manages to bring hannie to life in this novel, while still holding tight to historical authenticity. she does her story MORE than justice.

this is a book that really lays bare the two extremes of the human race: the purest evil, and the most courageous, fierce humanity. it's bleak as fuck. the afterword made me feel crushed -- reading about some of the women in the resistance who survived the war and spent the rest of their lives fighting against fascism in all its forms, and then looking at the current fucking state of the world. how can we as a species have capacity for so much evil???? it's so hard to be brave in the face of all of this. it was so interesting to see, at the beginning of the novel, how gradually things progressed toward total nazi occupation and subsequent massacre. nobody believed things would get as far as they did -- until they did. i can't help but see so many parallels to current times.

and the writing (especially toward the end) is so visceral i could feel it in my body.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

Oh my gosh this book was so intense. I laughed and cried and stopped in disbelief. I truly cannot believe this is a true story. It’s definitely a heavy read but an important one too and I’m so glad the stories of the brave individuals lives on. Also it was special to me because I’ve visited lots of the places in the Netherlands where these events occurred

I’d like to thank Ellie from Penguin for sending me an ARC of this book. Special shout out to my friend Wendy who buddy read this with me, I loved our daily chats as we read.

⭐What could I say about this book to express how much I loved it? I have read quite a few books on WWII but none have made me feel as emotional as this one. I am angry with myself for not knowing Hannie Schaft’s story until now because this incredible woman, Freddie, and Truus deserve all the recognition for what they did for their country.

💗The story is told beautifully. We start with a slower pace where we learn about Hannie, her hopes and dreams and see her join the resistance. This part of the story showed the effects the war was taking but the determination Hannie had to keep her friends and family safe was truly admirable. At such a young age she showed so much bravery.

😢 It’s impossible not to feel emotional during this read. What struck a chord with me was how differently the women treated the killings compared to the Nazis. They showed that they still had their humanity and only did what they needed to gain back control, whereas the Nazis were killing anything with a pulse. Staying human was very much the resistance motto.

📚The level of research that has gone into this story shines off the pages. Buzzy Jackson has given a voice to Hannie that brings her to the forefront of history. The notes at the book's end, detailing what had happened to the people mentioned, were a particularly nice touch.

🌍Masterfully weaving fact and fiction, this novel offers a new perspective on WWII, it gives a voice to the unknown stories. With beautiful prose, this tale will leave an everlasting impression on its readers, long after the final words have been read.

A riveting historical novel based on the true story of Johanna (Hannie) Schaft who was part of the Dutch Resistance during World War II - unputdownable!!

Hannie Schaft was a law student at university in Amsterdam in 1941 trying to continue her studies during the Nazi occupation of her country. As the situation in Amsterdam deteriorates for her two Jewish best friends, Hannie is driven to become an armed member of the Resistance in her hometown of Haarlem. Throughout the duration of the war, Hannie continues to put her life at risk as an assassin known to the Nazis as "the girl with the red hair" - so notorious that Hitler himself had her on his most wanted list.

This is such a powerful, heartrending story of courageous people who risked their lives to do the right thing. The historical research is impressive but the author has also crafted a thrilling pageturner that brings Hannie's story and her fight against fascism to life as well as her unwavering bravery and her determination to "stay human". The story is difficult to read at times because of the brutality and lack of humanity of the Nazis but important for us not to forget the suffering that was inflicted in The Netherlands and elsewhere. To Die Beautiful is an incredible debut novel by Buzzy Jackson - I hope she continues to write historical fiction.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

(ENGLISH BELOW)

(ENGLISH)

I knew what I was getting into and yet the book made me feel so angry and helpless.
In my eyes, Buzzy Jackson has created a masterpiece and brought those years in Hanni’s life so close to us as if we were there ourselves. Jackson was empathetic, enlightening, factual and not over-dramatising.
I really enjoyed the narrative style and the arc of suspense was incredible.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of World War II and the lives of resistance fighters. It should be said that the book is largely non-graphic, but towards the end scenes of torture are also described in more detail. I think this is important to understand the scale of the atrocities and can assure you that nothing in this book is romanticised in any way.
However, before you pick up this book, you should realise that you are getting involved in contemporary history and the biography of Hanni Schaft. This is not a fantasy novel, but the cruel reality. This is our story and we can and must be angry - we can and must remember what happened, because escalation like this can happen faster than we think and perhaps understand.
A book that is perhaps also incredibly important at the present time.

The day after our trip to the Netherlands I went to the library to find a historical novel set in the cities I got to visit. This book about the Dutch Resistance during the Nazi invasion came up as a good option with good reviews. It about killed me, it was so good. I wish I would have read it before the trip so I could go to the Resistance Museum, which I didn’t know existed, and see the tributes to Hannie Schaft and her organization of armed resisters. Set in beautiful Amsterdam and Haarlem, I could visualize the streets and farms and it made it that much more impactful. Also reading this alongside the news of the horrors of recent war makes it so much more incredibly raw. You feel deeply when you read stories like this.

Antes de saber o tema, o título convenceu me logo 🤭
