What do you get if you take three tough coastal marathons and stick them together?
The Oner . That’s what you get.
Starting at Shell Bay, just across the water from the iconic Sandbanks Beach, the race takes in 84 brutal miles along the UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jurassic Coast. Not a bad place for a run… if you ignore the 12,000ft of climbing and descending!
Following the path of the 2022 Oner race, Flippin’ Hell has it from World War II bunkers and 40-ton stone globes, to nuclear power station effluent pipes and the surprising amount of prisons on the (not an) island of Portland!
The considerable lows and the epic highs of taking part in a tough ultramarathon are laid bare. Be amazed at how a few (billion) pebbles can strike fear into the heart of our intrepid explorer, how every other runner becomes a target, and just how many wrong turns he can make even with the latest technology!
Outstanding book and not just for runners as I really enjoyed all the history of the Jurassic coast . Funny and really well written . I was in this race and DNF at 60 miles so it has brought back good and bad times and inspired me to give it another go - sometime ! A must read for runners and walkers of the coast path but honestly a great adventure book.
