Very informative and easy to read book. My only complaint is that the author suggests planting butterfly bush, which is not native to the US and is known to be a poor nectar source when compared with native plants. I wish the book emphasized planting native more.

Worth it entirely on just the color photographs alone. Organized by color, this is is one of the best guides for butterflies that I have observed.

A beautifully photographed field guide to the butterflies of the contiguous 48 states. (Canada and Mexico are treated in a very, very limited fashion, so the title is a bit misleading.) Glassberg explains the details of attracting, identifying, and understanding butterflies in layman's terms quite successfully--and I can't help but emphasize again the superb quality of the photographs. He even includes tips for gardening to attract each species/family by planting its caterpillar's food source, which is a refreshing take on the butterfly garden (far more helpful than the usual "plant anything red or purple with as many blossoms on each stem as possible"). It's a little peculiar that he uses common names for plants, but it's easily forgiven as an attempt at preserving readability since he includes a glossary with Latin names for all the plants at the end of the book.

🖊 My review: This is a useful publication to carry along on hikes and gardens. I found it useful, as it helped me identify several types of butterflies of which I am not familiar enough to identify without help. This is an excellent resource and guide 🦋. There are many suggestions on what these insects eat, so the butterfly gardener can plan accordingly. The full color photographs are helpful. I found Butterflies of North America useful.
