"Why?" is the first question we learn to ask as children and the one our parents have the hardest time answering. This is because "Why?" is the most difficult question to research.
Why is the color blue used for boys? Why do worms come out onto sidewalks after a rain? Why do chefs wear tall hats?
Everyone knows that . . .
. . . Donuts have holes . . . We clink glasses before saying a toast . . . Golfers yell “fore!” before teeing off . . . We not our heads yes and shake our heads no
But how many of us know why? You'll learn the answers and a whole lot more in this fun and fact-filled almanac. And all you have to do is ask WHY?!
Fun and interesting but I'm not convinced it's completely accurate. I've read other books and articles that contradict some of the information described.
I thought this was an interesting book, until I ran across some supposed "facts" in the book that are flat out wrong. Unfortunately those errors made me wonder what other "facts" in the book were erroneous.
I actually looked for contact information for the author, because I planned to write him with corrections for the items I found that were incorrect. But no contact info seems to exist.
Too bad. Otherwise would be interesting book for those of us who enjoy useless trivia.
What a delightful book! So often we use words and expressions without knowing why, and a few times we may actually pause and wonder why a word is used to describe someone or something. This book will provide the reasons we use certain phrases and expressions of everyday speech. The bonus is you will learn of many expressions that you may not have even thought about. As a side, this is the perfect book to read while flying because you can stop and pickup a word expression where you left off.
This is a short little book that is wonderful to read. Having been published before the era of the internet, one will learn of the origins of numerous idiomatic phrases (some of which are no longer used but are still neat to read and learn about) and find answers to curiosities in a clear and readily-understood fashion.
This was a fun book for answering those, I just have to know why? ponderings. Some of the questions asked in the year of the book's publication have since then, been answered. The question, why, is one of the first words of inquiry for a child.

This book was just alright. Literally just a question and answer format with no fluff or anything. I learned a little bit, but was disappointed because some of the answers were wrong! I probably won't remember half of the things I learned, but I'm sure a few will stick! This is a good book to just read when you're REALLY bored and have nothing else to do. And it's a pretty quick read.
This is just a neat little book loaded with interesting answers to questions you may have asked. It's nice just to flip through it every once in a while.
