I loved this book. I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Nick to grow up in such a famous political family and be an artistic sort who loves words. I especially enjoyed reading this because of my Greek heritage. It took me back to my growing up years when family meant physical presence, and lots of stories, some of which were true! (This is almost autobiographical. I have read Nick's blog as well.)

Αρκετά ευχάριστα/διασκεδαστικά αλλά και συγκινητικά σημεία στα κείμενα, χάνουν όμως καθώς η γραφή φαίνεται πολλές φορές αποστασιοποιημένη από τα γεγονότα.

Το βιβλίο είναι μια σειρά από δέκα, φαινομενικά, ξεχωριστές ιστορίες που συνθέτουν τη βιογραφία του αφηγητή και της οικογένειάς του. Ο κεντρικός χαρακτήρας, ο μικρός Αριστείδης , έρχεται στην Ελλάδα από την Αμερική στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του '60 με την οικογένειά του.
Μέσα από τα μάτια του παιδιού-αφηγητή, παρακολουθούμε τη μετάβαση από τον αμερικανικό τρόπο ζωής στο ελληνικό πολιτικό και κοινωνικό τοπίο. Η αφήγηση εστιάζει στη σχέση του γιου με την επιβλητική μορφή του πατέρα-πολιτικού και την καθημερινότητα μιας οικογένειας που ζει στο επίκεντρο της πολιτικής ζωής. Ο μικρός Αριστείδης βιώνει την πίεση του ονόματος, τους φόβους και τις προσδοκίες, ενώ προσπαθεί να κατανοήσει τους άγραφους κανόνες του πολιτικού παιχνιδιού και της ελληνικής γλώσσας.
Ο Παπανδρέου προσπαθεί να αφηγηθεί την "ιστορία" του πέρα από τους "μύθους" που περιβάλλουν το επώνυμό του. Το βιβλίο θίγει τα θέματα της πατρικής φιγούρας, της προσωπικής αναζήτησης και του βάρους της ιστορίας, χρησιμοποιώντας την πολιτική σκηνή ως φόντο για μια βαθιά ανθρώπινη και προσωπική αφήγηση.
Η αφήγηση είναι άμεση και ρέουσα, χωρίς ίχνος έπαρσης, με έντονο χιούμορ και ειλικρίνεια .
Οι χαρακτήρες είναι βασισμένοι σε πραγματικά πρόσωπα, αλλά παρουσιάζονται με λογοτεχνική ελευθερία .
Αντιμετωπίστε το ως προσωπική μαρτυρία και όχι αντικειμενικό ιστορικό ντοκουμέντο.
Σύσταση:Μια υπέροχη έκπληξη .

This novel is written by the son of the former Greek Prim Minister Papandreou. It is clearly partially autobiographical, but is a work of fiction that tells the story of a son and how he fits into the family of a Greek socialist politician. Both his grandfather and his father have answered the call to be leaders against first a monarchy and then a right wing dictatorship. Since it is told from a boy's perspective we get the sense of what is happening from a child's view, but a child wrapped up in the doings of a highly political family. We know what it is like for a son to take on responsibility for political/family favors such as being the godfather to a supporters child, what it is like to experience soldiers breaking into his home to arrest his father, what it is like to be the son of someone who is more available to other people than to his own family.

What I enjoyed most about the story was the glimpse into Greek culture and history it provided as the boy, who was born in the U.S., is sent to spend the summer in a small village so he can get to know the Greek language and culture on a personal level, the rite of baptism, the interaction of the boy with his surroundings. It is an interesting and enjoyable read.

Historical fiction does not have to be long to be good. I felt the writing in this 177 page novel was superb. My heart went out to the boy whose grandfather, father, and (later) older brother would be such important figures in Greece's struggle for democracy. The author showed me what the grandmother espoused: politics hurts the family - and it does not sound like he endorsed the socialism of the family patriarchs.

What a godawful read. At least it was short. If I didn't have to read it for my book club I wouldn't have bothered to go beyond the first chapter.
