A Compilation containing the Lectures on Faith as delivered at the School of the Prophets at Kirtland, Ohio with added references on the Godhead and the Holy Ghost; also An Historical Sketch of the Same by Dr. John A. Widtsoe; also a treatise on True Faith by Orson Pratt; also a Bibliography on Melchizedek by Ariel L. Crowley.
I must have got this and read it back in the '70s for a college religion class. I have been wanting to read it again for a little while. Honestly, it was a slog to get through. This book has additional writings. The lectures themselves are interesting both in what they say and in exhibiting the fact of continuing revelation, since revelations were received after these lectures were written and presented that further clarify or even correct the information in the lectures.
There was at least some little thing of interest in each of the seven lectures on faith. Number sixth is marked up the most. And I think I 'learned' some things that I didn't remember from all those years ago.
I had to really push through Orson Pratt's treatise "True Faith," the last piece in this volume. The logic he uses in the beginning is completely bonkers if he is trying to 'convince' someone of his point of view. And then he states that, unless you have experienced one of the signs described at the end of the book of Mark, you are an unbeliever. Yikes! Cast out a devil in the name of Jesus? no. Spoken in tongues? no. Prevailed against deadly poison? no. Healed the sick by the laying on of hands? no. Sheesh.
Well, I am a believer, even if I don't measure up to Orson Pratt's criteria.
This volume might be good for resource, but I definitely don't feel a need to read it again. Ever.
