A noblewoman bequeathes land to the Church as part of her legacy. It is the year 1101 AD and the Propst Eberwin proceeds to found the monastery of the Augustinian Canons Regular in what is today the town of Berchdesgaden in southern Germany.
Ludwig Ganghofer memorialized him and the spectacular Alpine setting in this fictional historical novel. The story begins with Eberwein (spelling in the novel) arriving in this sparsely populated hinterland that had long been neglected by the Church. His arrival upsets the local power structure controlled by a strongman with the populace now caught in the middle. As the human drama escalates Ganghofer intertwines it with the dramatic landscape and its geologic forces. What emerges is a satisfying and highly entertaining novel.
