He watches them from afar. He knows who they are and where they are. He is waiting in the dark...
A stranger stalks the streets of Houghton le Spring and he is getting too close for comfort for Detective Inspector Lorraine Hunt.
Selina, the daughter of Lorraine's partner, DS Luke Daniels, is a beautiful and wilful sixteen year-old with a dark past. Just as it seems she's finally getting back on her feet, she's attacked. Is Selina's past catching up with her? Or is there an even more sinister motive to the assault?
Before long, Lorraine and Luke's worst fears are realised, and a body is found. A young woman, brutally murdered, her heart cut out, and in its place - a single white rose.
Soon the White Rose Killer steps up his campaign. Is DI Hunt imagining it, or does he have a message specially for her? As he circles ever closer, nobody escapes suspicion and Lorraine faces her toughest case yet.
The closer the killer gets, the more elusive he becomes. Lorraine is tested to the limit by a killer with no conscience, no remorse. Just a pitiless hatred for the girls who inspire desire within him...
Sheila Quigley started work at 15 as a presser in Hepworths, a tailoring factory. She married at 18 and had three daughters: Dawn, Janine and Diane and a younger son, Michael. Recently divorced, she now has eight grandchildren, five boys and three girls, and every Saturday and Sunday can be found at a football match for the under tens and under fifteens. Sheila has lived on the Homelands Estate (at present with her son and two dogs) at Houghton-le-Spring near Sunderland for 30 years.
This is probably the best in the Lorraine Hunt series. Full of twists and turns and turmoil and mystery.
My favourite part of this book is how real everything is. From everyone in a household crowding round the window to watch a police raid across the road (don't turn the light on or they'll see us watching!) to a daughter pushing the boundaries with a father she never knew she had.
The romance in this book builds slowly with the adult characters, but the teenage characters have exactly the right amount of young-impulsiveness that lets them love so freely and eagerly.
The crimes are gruesome and horrific, with a twisted killer and some unexpected deaths. Sheila Quigley is not afraid to kill some pretty awesome characters, who you think will hang around for at least a whole book. These deaths are shocking but just add to this already pretty amazing book.
One more to go, and I'll be quite sad when I get to the end of this series. I started reading it in high-school and it's stayed with me easily these past six or seven years.
I chose this book for the "Q" for my A-Z author challenge, and luckily it was a quick read because the writing wasn't great.
A serial killer is on the loose near Sunderland, and one of his attempted victims is the daughter of a police officer.
About halfway through the book I read the author biog, and discovered that the author is a grandmother of eight. However, I don't think this has helped her to get into the head of a 16 year old girl. Supposedly the character has been living on the streets & taking drugs but she manages to suddenly change her ways far too easily when she goes to live with the father she has never known. None of the teenage characters really rang true, and there were quite a lot of them, too many in my opinion, some of them completely irrelevant.
I figured out who the baddie was very early in the book, and the reason for his killing spree was very flimsy.
I'll not be reading any other books from this author.
Superb read, which I could not put down. Sheila's writing style is so easily readable and the way she writes about the characters is excellent, she is so good at this, that when I started reading another of her books....I was happy when the same characters cropped up, because I knew about them. The book is fast paced and is unputtadownable!!!! (there's a new word for you)
A very short airport read where the style of writing - the use of "yer" for example - distracted from the story. More of a 2.5 stars but that isn't an option.
He watches them from afar. He knows who they are and where they are. He is waiting in the dark..... A stranger stalks the streets of Houghton-le-Spring and he is getting to close for comfort for DI Lorraine Hunt. Selina, the daughter of Lorraine's partner, DS Luke Daniels, is a beautiful and wilful 16 yearold with a dark past. Just as it seems she is finally getting back on her feet, she is attacked. Is selina's past catching up with her? Or is there an even more sinister motive for the attack? Before long, Lorraine and Luke's worst fears are realised, and a body is found. A young woman, brutally murdered, her heart cut out, and in its place - a single white rose. Soon the White Rose Killer steps up his campaign. Is DI Hunt imagining it, or does he have a message especially for her> As he circles ever closer, nobody escapes suspicion and Lorraine faces her toughest case yet. Of the four Sheila Quigley books I have read so far - this has to be my favorite! It romped along at a cracking pace, the story line is interesting without being extremely complicated. The characters are likable (though I did get irritated when DI Hunt initially missed an important clue)and are not overwhelmed by their private lives which tie nicely into the tale. I thought I knew who the White Rose Killer was, then I wasn't sure....... I will be looking for more Quigley books!
I've enjoyed all the other books in this series & while this was okayish I felt it was certainly poor compared to the others. As well as not finding the story very believable, I found some of the characters less than credible, Selina in particular. For me it was a stretch to see her as a 16 year-old, the relationship with mad-ex boyfriend Eccles was less than convincing (as was he) & when she ran off, why the hell to Dublin? The only reason as far as I can tell was to create a very tenuous link enabling the introduction of Wade, who was the most unconvincing of the lot!
But what really, & I mean REALLY, got on my nerves was the continuous use of "yer". I know it adds to the authenticity of the characters speech but can no-one in the book say "you".......
Love all of Sheila's books, living in the North East of England myself it's always great to read stories that's set in your home town. This is another brilliant book from Sheila in the Lorraine Hunt series I've enjoyed every one, it's easy to read, follow, uncomplicated and a pleasure to have said read.
A psychopath goes round killing women and then rips their hearts out to replace them with a white rose. Pretty unsavory, but when the daughter of a police officer (Selina) is attacked, a link would seem to exist with this serial killer and the incident. Selina’s dad and his girlfriend (who both work for the Force) try to track down the killer. OK in places, this book did get too fast paced, with too many characters and I found myself skipping pages. I was curious as to who the killer was, but otherwise, an average read.
I really enjoyed this book. I haven't read any Sheila Quigley before and this has sat on my 'to read shelf' for a while now. It was quite an easy and quick read but the characters were like-able and I was engrossed from the start, even if the story was a bit predictable I still didn't want to put it down until I had finished. I will definitely read another Quigley when I get the chance.
The Lorraine Hunt series gets better. In this book Lorraine sorts out her relationship with Luke and makes friends with his daughter only to find her past problems coming back leaving her in danger and relying on Lorraine and Luke to sort out the mess and save her. Again regular characters are woven into the story so you really get into the lives of Seahills residents.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it kept you guessing throughout and it was a really good read. I would definitely recommend it to anybody who is looking for a good book. I love this author and would definitely buy more of her books.
Interesting book titles this wroter uses-all song titles. I didn't mind this one but it didn't make me want to rush out and buy all her other novels !!
