Jessa is one healing away from death. Under the thrall of her gift, the Court's Senior Healer risks giving her life in exchange for her patient's.

Vale is a rebel ruler. When his brother is killed, he's given the throne and the decree from the Court to produce an heir or lose his family's hold on the land--and his deceiving advisors aren't afraid to use murder as a weapon if their directive to stay away from the Senior Healer goes unheeded.

But Vale burns to possess Jessa. The heat between them leaves a wake of smoke, and even the powerful forces above want to bind them in a union that lasts forever. Vale taking another would be a betrayal neither could survive.

Their enemies fear a child born of such a powerful Healer and Warrior, but the true threat lies in the bond forged in shadows and fused in fire.

Jessa has had her named besmirched all because she's a healer. Everyone in her village thinks she has given herself to Vale's brother, King Zander. She's tarnished, wanton, used. When Zander goes missing, she's called to confirm whether she can feel his life force even as it ebbs away. She can't save him if she can't touch him. Though her heart breaks with the loss of her friend, now she'll be forced into the service of his brother, Vale.

Vale believes the rumors, that Jessa uses sexual healing and has willingly given herself to his brother, Zander, and it burns into his soul. When he's forced into the Kingship, he stubs the young healer, thinking to replace her, but no one has her talent. When she saves his life, he realizes his mistake. Slowly, as he spends time with the healer, she reveals her secrets, and Vale comes to realize, he must have her for his own... and it is forbidden.

A race from a distant place crosses into their realm, hoping to find a home, but what they find is a woman, beaten and battered, something intolerable in their society. Instead, they find themselves forced into war not of their own making and just when King Vale's kingdom finds itself in near shambles.

Ruined by Kinley Baker is a fast, fun read with twists and turns, and there's not only a tortured hero, but a tortured heroine, each made for the other. Their people have learned to use the shadows, gifted. When Zander goes missing, Vale is forced to take his place, bringing Jessa and the rebel King together. Vale and Jessa are like coal and flame, and it takes but a spark to ignite their fire. But, even as they consummate their relationship, Vale discovers they can never be married, he must choose another. Though it goes against everything in his soul, he's forced to ask another to be his wife, someone he doesn't want and can't ever love, someone who is already in love with someone else. Crushed beyond reasoning, Jessa agrees to stay, but another problem arises, one she can't share with her lover, Vale, because he has vowed to marry another. Jessa has to make plans to escape his castle, and if she must, their kingdom. To watch Vale with another woman is beyond her capacity. When she recognizes that Vale's intended is pregnant, she knows the time to leave has come. There is evil brewing in the realm, ready to take Vale's place, and this evil is like nothing the realm has seen. Can Jessa live without the one person who stirs her blood? Can Vale understand that Jessa can't share his bed while he beds another? What will become of the love Jessa and Vale share?

Ruined is a great read, from the first pages of the book, I was rooting for the love shared between Jessa and Vale, even before he can understand and acknowledge their love. Jessa is an innocent wrongly accused. Vale is the misunderstood brother of the King, hoping to never have to fulfill his obligation. When these two come together, they share more than love, the ancients brand them, one for the other, a perfect match. Both choose to ignore this branding as law forbids Vale to marry any healer. Ruined is a story of lost love and hope, a love story that ignites the pages. It takes Jessa's disappearance for Vale to realize he can't live without her. Evil is brewing in their kingdom, waiting to take Vale's life and his kingdom. Ruined captured my heart as the two young lovers struggle to be together. Paranormal romance lovers as well as historical lovers should give this one a try. I'm glad I did. This is Kinley Baker's debut novel, and I hope there is much more to come from this author. 5 out of 5 fairy kisses for this paranormal romance lover.

Kinley Baker is a new author and Ruined is a wonderful first book. It is a book about nations that have escaped the greed and envy and mistrust of other dimensions to find a peaceable way to survive. It is about wanting what you can’t have. Forbidden love and uncontrollable greed. It is very difficult to write a story that so many are trying to write. To come up with a new slant. World building as I have often said is a difficult task. And yet Ms Baker does a wonderful job.

Ruined is about a girl.. just your everyday girl, who happens to be the premier healer and great friend to the king. And well totally infatuated with the King’s younger brother. And a boy, one of the best warrior in the realm. Dedicated to serving the king, not being the king. Until, the unthinkable happens..

Vane, the Warrior Prince, he does not want the throne. He wants to be free to do what he does best. And yet with the death of his brother the crown is thrust upon him. He is instantly immersed into a corrupt council that is split. A council that is willing to watch him fail, would prefer to see him loose it all. A few stand on his side but even those are lost to his own demons. He finds he is besotted by his premier healer but refused to acknowledge it as he sees her as his brother’s former mistress. He has had to take the crown he doesn’t have to take the “first mistress”.

Jessa is not only the premier healer of her day but maybe ever, she has been friends with the king since the beginning of her term. Neither ever saw it as more than friends but were willing to allow gossip to claim them as lovers. Knowing what was true it never mattered. Until the unthinkable.. With Vane being King and ready to turn her aside just because he wants her.. but doesn’t trust her. Jessa is devastated.. but she is strong and a survivor.

As the story grows, Vane and Jessa are thrust together and grow in friendship and in love.. Of course their love is forbidden by ancient scrolls and they must abandon it. Vane is willing to work with it but the council insists that he can not marry a healer and he MUST marry and produce a child within a year of the coronation or lose all..

As Jessa and Vane try and work through their grief, convictions and love.. there are those who would destroy the crown at any price. A betrayed fiance.. an evil father, a rejected suitor and a corrupt council member..
Then of course the corruption grows as the other nations of the realm find that they too have traitors amidst them.

Ms Baker writes with a delicate hand, penning her characters with insidious evil, pure integrity and arrogant males.. Each of her characters has a place within the story and as each individual story grows, Ms Baker blends them together like a master baker..

I am ever so patiently (ok, so I am tapping my foot and drumming my fingers) waiting for the next rendition to her series..

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and Kinley Baker's writing style. This paranormal romance was fun to watch unfold. From the start when Jessa and Vale wanted each other from afar and had trouble accepting that reality to struggles they endured and the heartbreaking choices they had to make it was very entertaining to watch them dance around things as they find their way to each other.
I always enjoy a plot that had a lot of twists, political intrigue and mystery and this does, starting with what happened to King Zander and what was he really doing on his mission. I think those answers are going to be key to many things further into the series. His disappearance/death leaves us with a very reluctant King Vale. Baker did a nice job helping him mature into the man he became as he learned the ins and outs as well as the deviousness of the royal court. It didn't take him long to realize he was being manipulated by many people, but a little longer for him to figure out how to handle them.
Loved that the paranormal side of this story wasn't overwhelming, but nicely mingled into every aspect of their trials and tribulations. Traveling by the shadows is a great concept and has limitless possibilities, along with the elusive portals to other worlds that are yet to be really addressed. Tie that all up in a place where somepeople are gifted with special talents (Healer, Warrior, Sensitive and Seer) but often feel the need to keep them hidden and there are you have added yet another level of intrigue and many possible twists.
In comes Jessa, King Zander's Senior Healer and his closest friend. Baker did a great job with Jessa as the heroine. She is strong, determined, intelligent and has a solid sense of right from wrong. She knew what her obligations were and tried her best to meet them regardless of the personal consequences and grief. She struggles with an undeserved tarnished reputation and faces ridicule daily as she continues with her Senior Healer duties until she can't do it anymore. Great watching her grow.
Great first book in a series. I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the Realm of Shadows next.

Kinley Baker has created an intricate and vivid world in her novel, Ruined.. The mythology surrounding the world's development is fresh and unique. More than that, she's populated this world with rich and amazing characters.
Jessa is endearing and warm, with a quiet inner strength that has you rooting for her from the beginning. You find yourself waxing and waning with her emotions, cheering her on. A couple of times, I caught myself fussing at her for some of her decisions, which just made her more real.
It took some time for me to warm up to Vale. In the very beginning, I felt like punching him, hard. But, clever Kinley Baker opens your eye to who he is. He is everything a good leader should be, with a thread of vulnerability that endears him to you. There are still a few moments where you want to punch him, but he wouldn't be a good male lead otherwise.
And this is just the two main characters. There is political intrigue, overlap from other worlds, and several other endearing characters that I cannot wait to read more about soon (in case you were wondering, Kinley Baker, that was a hint.)
If you're looking for something with a unique feel, you're going to want to pick up a copy of Ruined.

Jessalyn spies from the shadows while a man swims in a pond with his dog. She shouldn’t watch, she knows, but he’s beautiful, naked, and she can’t help herself. As Senior Healer in the king’s service, she knows that it’s a day of reckoning for his brother, Valerian. Their kingdom’s laws provide that the people should not go more than 45 days without a ruler on their throne, and King Zander has been missing for 44. Shortly after, the prince is summoned. His play time is over, and Jessa reluctantly returns to work.

Vale, as the rogue prince is commonly called, has labored hard his entire life to avoid responsibility, so the obligation to determine his missing brother’s fate is a heavy one. In truth, while they cared for each other, Vale and Zander were never close. The younger brother was perfectly happy being next-in-line to rule while Zander was present, healthy, and bound to have an heir sooner or later. But now, as he stands before a restricted chamber door, key in hand, he is moments from learning the king’s fate, and by default, his own.

The artifact that lies within is a massive stone fountain called The Well. Water pours into the catch pool from nine feet above, and small bubbles float in the water below. Each one holds the spark of a Shadow Shifter’s life force. The one belonging to Zander is dim. Vale is hopeful for his brother’s life, and his own freedom, only long enough to summon his sister, Arianna. Together they watch the light in their brother's bubble go out.

Jessa is then summoned to pronounce the king dead, a stark duty of her position. Afterwards, Vale gives her a letter left behind in the chamber by the king. There was one for each of them. Zander tells tells his brother that Vale is the better man. He warns his sister not to marry a certain ambitious council member under threat that he'll come back to haunt her. To Jessa, he shares a secret and an instruction to destroy the letter. The king’s siblings find it strange that their brother would confide in his doctor (presumed to have been his lover) and not them. But, as they both admit when their grief dulls a bit, they didn’t know their brother any better than they knew him. On the other hand, Jessa was Zander's closest friend.

As in nearly any case when a balance of power shifts suddenly, there’re people cranking their brains to finds ways to take advantage of the situation, and there is no rest for the wicked in this kingdom. In motion are plans to marry, depose, and kill Vale before the guy has a moment to remember that he left his dog by the pond.

Unlike Vale, who can transport his body through shadows, Lady ran the whole way home in the rain. (Poor soaked dear!) It's a pretty little metaphor for the abrupt shift in the prince's life; he's made a leap into a dangerous arena, while the casual life he prefers remains behind with his dog.

Adding to Vale’s concerns about becoming king, and Jessa’s about her job security, they both have a great deal of lust for each other. They are both also under the mistaken impression that the other doesn't share their feelings. Their dance around each other dominates the first half of the book, and I was reminded of Benedict and Beatrice from Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” Jessa and Vale are intelligent, strong, even stubborn characters who flirt with denials and snark. Vale resists his desire, as getting it on with his dead brother’s mistresses is against his own rules. Jessa interprets his blundering attempts at avoiding temptation to be disdain for her. She has a less than innocent reputation, after all, and since clearing up the misunderstanding would actually cause her greater scandal than being a whore, she lives with the shadow. For her part, she resists temptation to spare Vale the same scrutiny that Zander faced during their acquaintance. Vale just doesn't know what to do with the thought of a woman who doesn't want him and fires her on more than one occasion, regretting the move each time. Finally, when Vale learns the truth, that she loves him…always has, and always would, he knows he'll never be with another woman.

Of course, when you see the word "never" in fiction, it usually indicates a conflict brewing. And what's a romance without something tearing the lead couple apart. In Ruined, that something is a heavy, multi-dimensional obstacle.

Ruined is a quick, buttery-smooth read, from a talented writer, and the execution of drawn-out sexual tension is one of the best that I've read in last twenty years. Bypassing this book would be a shame. Also, there's a sequel coming.

The world created in Ruined was really interesting. I liked how certain people could ride shadows and they'd instantly be where they needed to be.I was jealous every time Jessa and Vale got to travel that way! I also liked how it was explained that there were different realms, and how Jessa and Vale's ancestors came into this Realm from the Mortal one because they didn't like how battle hungry the anglo saxons were that attacked the area of where they lived. After arriving in this realm, they sealed off the way to get back to the mortal realm. The ancestors felt that is was just too dangerous and didn't want those pesky mortals accidentally finding there way through to this realm.

The people in this realm have lived in peace, but all is not calm. The current King, Zander disappears and is presumed dead. There are those who believe that some in the court are involved with his murder, and so when Vale, the Kings brother becomes King he has a lot to deal with and isn't happy about it. He'd much rather leave the ruling to others. However, he does his duty and takes over as King. He has a small problem on his hands-his senior healer, Jessa. She's the most powerful healer of her generation, but everyone thinks she was his brothers mistress-including him. He's attracted to her, and that along with the fact he can't get past the fact she slept with his brother bothers him...so he dismisses her from court.

Jessa is upset that she got fired because she's good at what she does, and despite the rumors did not have an affair with the king-they were just friends. She hates the fact that everyone thinks she did, but can't get it through to people that they really were just friends, because the old king had so few of them. I loved this part of the story. The tension between Vale and Jessa made me shiver. I also really liked seeing Vale struggle through his emotions..he's so tortured. He knows that firing Jessa isn't a smart move, but does anyway and feels guilty about it...the scenes between Jessa and Vale are wonderful. The fighting attraction between them just worked well, and didn't bother me like it normally does.

What did bother me was that when the two finally got together it was because Vale gave her a gift...I know that the gift was meant to show that he was sorry for being such a jerk to her, etc., but it bothered me a bit that she was like "I love you" after that because of how she had stood up to him before that point. However, I managed to get over that pretty easily mainly because the dynamics between the two were great. The biggest problem I had with Ruined was with the villains. I was so into the romance part of the book that I didn't want to spend any time with the bad guys. I think it would have helped if they hadn't been revealed so early on in the book. I just wanted to shake Vale and Jessa for not being able to figure out who they were sooner. However, I think that a large part of my problem with this point of the book is because I don't read a lot of fantasies, and am used to the entire story being about the hero/heroine.

Despite the problems I had with the villains, it was able to hold my attention for the entire book, and that's rare with this genre. I'm glad I took a chance on this book. :)

This book is without a doubt a paranormal romance. It has all the elements you would need to make it a paranormal book, but it is also very heavy on the romance. I do really enjoy paranormal romance books, but often times I find that paranormal romances feel like they need to be so romance filled, that they put in a lot of unnecessary sex scenes that don't actually propel the plot. This was not at all the problem for this book at all, the romance in the book was instrumental to the plot of the book and helped move it forward.

I really enjoyed the book overall, there were a wide variety of characters, and lets just say that Jessa and Vale had some serious opposition to them being together. It pretty much seemed like everyone was out to keep them apart. It could have been repetitive but each one of the characters who wanted to keep them apart had their own unique reasons for it. I think it made it all the more interesting to watch Jessa and Vale try to find a way to be together in spite of everything that was going on.

The novel starts with a tragedy, the death of King Zander (Vale's brother), and this death is a huge undertone to the entire book. Mystery shrouds what happened to him and why. And as this book is going to have a sequel I am pretty sure more of that mystery will be revealed (at least I hope so). You find others had a hand in his death, and as you read you want to find out more. In fact so many of the characters all had their own little parts to play that all indirectly or directly played a role in some serious changes for the kingdom.

The villains in this book Vierty and Andre are really well written. They both have their own motivations, and are sometimes willing to work with others to get their goals achieved, but one thing is clear about them, they are only in it for themselves. They are master manipulators who are interesting to watch, because as you are reading the book you just can't help but hope someone brings them down a notch.

One of the most sad things about this book was the group of basically refugees that are introduced. They have lost everything, they lost their home, and they lost the women of the kind. There is so much despair in these people, and you can't help but feel for them.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I am going to give this book a "Good" rating because while I enjoyed all the elements listed above, I did feel like the pace of the novel got very quick towards the end, which sometimes made the characters actions feel rushed or inorganic. But other than that it is a great read, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys paranormal romance, or someone who enjoys romance but wants to try out a book with paranormal elements.

Ruined by Kinley Baker
(Reviewed by Saewod Tice)

Ruined is the steamy and stormy tale of Jessa and Vale, the Healer and the reluctant Shadow Shifter King.

Vale, after his brother King Zander’s death, is faced with a throne he doesn’t want, a corrupt court, advisors who are not afraid to use murder or threaten the passion he feels for the Senior Healer.

Jessa risks her own life each time she saves someone from death. This selflessness isn’t enough to deter the rumors floating around her people for being so close to the dead king. Rumors of being Zander’s mistress are enough for Vale to dismiss her from her position as Senior Healer- regardless of his deep draw to her.

Kinley Baker takes this premise and pushes it into a new world. Shadow Shifters, Healers, Seers, Sensitives, Portal Openers, the possibilities seemed endless within her world. Ruined was a refreshing take on the different realms without losing the mortal aspect. Her explanation of Anglo-Saxons being the cause for the Shadow Shifters to find a new realm was a really interesting portrayal of their beginnings. The ancestors, bond, and the shadow shifting were immensely hot.

Kinley also took the ‘lovers who couldn’t be’ and gave it an interesting spin, leaving Vale and Jessa unable to wed due to the court’s fear of possible children- a healer cannot sit on the throne with access to the well of souls. The past taught them this lesson all too well.

Now, the ‘lesson’ was a bit weak where the Healer King was involved. I wanted it to be a bit darker, making it impossible. I didn’t quite get there with the explanation.

Jessa and Vale’s emotions were written well and I felt a connection and understanding to both their situations. However, I have to admit that by the time we neared the end I’d grown tired of the alternating point of views- there were just too may for me and sometimes I wasn’t clear about who was talking to whom.

Overall, this was a decent steamy read with an interesting premise.

Valerian Francis, the second son, has done all he could to show he does not care to rule. He did not expect to rule but Fate thinks differently. The disappearance of King Zander and the doctrine of the Shadow Shifters dictated that a new King must be placed on the throne as it cannot stay empty for 45 days. Nevertheless, Vale is The Warrior and he knows that if he has to, he is able to lead his people. Despite all the challenges presented to him, he will prove himself to be a more than competent ruler of the Shadow Shifter.

Healer Jessalyn is a challenge. He cannot be in her presence too long and not lose control. When he wasn’t a King, she was untouchable as he wasn’t going to touch his brother’s women. Now that he’s King, she is out of reached. A union between a Warrior King and a Healer is forbidden by law. And yet, is this enough to stop him claiming her?

He was sunk, and he knew it. She somehow completed him. The inherent restlessness in his nature felt at peace for the first time with her near. But what could he do about his new emotions? If they’d been intimate, he would have blamed her sensual nature. They hadn’t, which meant these feelings resulted from her merely existing.

Jessa has never looked at any other man the same way she looked at Vale. For years, she has seen him, covertly, at the lake, whilst picking up herbs. She knows it is forbidden but she can’t help herself. She knows she will love only once so she needs to be careful of whom she gave her heart to. Whilst their coming together is not strictly forbidden, there is no future for them.

This is a sweet sparky magical romance which I thoroughly enjoyed. Coming from a fantasy reading background though, I wish there was more world building. There is promise here for something epic but for an easy and fun read, it’s done its job. If you love fantasy and like a bit of romance, but not too keen on the paranormal this one is for you.

Sometimes love doesn’t listen to the rules of propriety. And even the people who wield the most power can’t control it.

Fantasy, love and intrigue combine to form a quick story that is sure to please!

Vale has spent his entire life in the shadow of his older brother, Zander. As heir, Zander has always been the responsible one. As the King, Zander was the one in control, while Vale was most often seen in the forests hunting. But when Zander goes missing, and is later declared dead, the throne is suddenly thrust upon Vale's shoulder. Can he bare the weight of the job better suited for his brother?

Jessa, the Senior Healer, has spent the last few years secretly spying on Vale. Something about him captures her attention—and ignites passion within her. She knows nothing could ever come of such an affair, especially once he is made King, but how can she walk away when her body wants her to stay with him?

As far as creating an enjoyable fantasy world goes, Kinley Baker has done a wonderful job. I was very interested in the world she introduced to us in Ruined, and it's one I'd like to read more about.
However, I was left wanting a bit. I wanted to know more about the Realm of Shadows and the people who lived in it. I felt like I was only given parts of the picture and I wanted to see the whole thing. I will say I'm quiet interested by the mysterious Varner that are introduced towards the end of the book—they're mating bonds are very unusual, and, depending on how the writing is pulled of, it could be quiet sexy!

My feeling of disappointment spread to other parts of the story, too. The romance was pretty good, but nothing grand. I wanted to like Vale and Jessa, but in the end they were just “ok”. I felt like I only knew a little bit about them, and it just wasn't enough.

I loved this book! It’s a different type of paranormal read that kept me turning its pages non stop in anticipation. I found myself addicted to it, it’s charm and its characters. Put it this way… I read it in less than a day and could not bring myself to go to sleep until I was through! It’s a very romantic, touching; exciting and magical read that’s packed full of love, treachery, deceit and multiple surprises that will have you holding your breath in anticipation. Any fan of the paranormal genre or even just romance fans will love Ruined :)

Jessa is a healer, the highest ranking healer in all the land. Best friend to the late king and rumored to be his mistress for many years. An untrue rumor that she has dealt with and still does even with his passing, no one looks at her as they should. It’s said a healer of her caliber relies on sexual energy in order to heal and because of that she’s been labeled as a harlot. She lets them talk and is only worried about what one person truly thinks of her, if only he’d take notice of her and the feelings she holds deep for him, the current king Vale.

Vale is now left to take the throne of his lands as king. Something he never desired and still does not. He’s a born warrior and loves it that way. But when he has no choice but to take it or it’ll end up in the wrong hands, he finds himself flooded with decisions and situations he cannot bare. Holding on to private feelings for a certain healer has made him unbearably grouchy. She’s been in love with his brother for many years and he cannot bring himself to approach her with what he feels for her after knowing loved was shared between the two. But he cannot think of any other but her.

A roller coaster ride of many ups and downs for this duo due to others as well as doubts between the two of them. But one can never mess with fate. For what is meant to be, is just that, meant to be.

A couple of months ago I saw this gorgeous cover and knew I had to read the book. For those who don't know me, I love fantasy and medieval so this book was right in my wheelhouse.

I was hooked by the first chapter. The world Ms. Baker creates is well-drawn and magical. The Shadow Shifter race is complex enough to build credibility but easy enough for the reader to quickly grasp. Traveling through any shadows, the people can transcend space and time and move from place to place.

IN this world various people are gifted with one of the four spiritual gifts, which gives them supernatural ability in thier area of expertise--Warrior, Healer, Seer, and Sensitive. And in rare cases people are gifted with more than one.

When the story begins we find out Zander, the king is dead and Valerian, his Warrior brother must reluctantly take the throne.

Whenever someone dies, their death must be confirmed by the Senior Healer in the Well of Souls. Enter Jessalyn, Senior Healer and best friend of the decesed king.

While everyone in the kingdom assumes Jessa is the dead king's mistress, it is Valerian (Vale) she is drawn to. Unfortunately, he also belives kingdom gossip despite his strong attraction to the beautiful healer.

And to further complicate matters, the king is never allowed to marry a healer. The deck is stacked against the couple from the onset.

I loved this story. The characters were rich and real. The world well-formed and believeable. The villains were not just story ornaments but had true motivation and depth. And the best part was the chemistry between Jessa and Vale and their growing love for one another. The romantic tension and heat these two generated rocked their world (and mine). I would recommend this delightfully plotted, well-written story to anyone who loves otherworld fantasy with dark villains and magical elements.

Vale just ascended to the throne as the King of the Shadow Shifters. Jessa is the senior healer to their race. The court forbids their union, and Vale is torn between his duty to his people, and the need to have Jessa as his own.

Vale and Jessa’s relationship is a constant struggle built on misconceptions. I enjoyed the characters and their growing relationship. The constant upheaval that comes between these two keeps the story exciting. The passion between them will keep any romance fan happy. I am also drawn to the character of Caleb. He is a warrior of the Varner people, after being attacked in their own realm they have taken shelter in the shadow realm. It is apparent their people have been through hardships, but they remain honorable. I really want to see what the future brings for Caleb and his army.

Baker has created a tale that captures you from the start. I found the storyline fascinating, and I kept reading, eager to learn more about these characters and their way of life. This book has everything a reader could ask for, from the blossoming romance between Vale and Jessa to the drama that involves this new king and his enemies. This is the first book of the series, so I know all of my questions won’t be answered. However, I would have liked if the author gave a little more background on the races involved in the story; especially where the Gaspar are concerned. With that being said, I thought this was a good start to the series, and I am looking forward to the continuing story.

My thoughts:
This is a wonderfully written story. I am totally in love with the characters. Vale and I had a difference of opinion and I had to set the book aside for a few days, but we are back now that he figured out that he was wrong. Jessa is a fabulous character; although I do have a few issues with the self-sacrificing moments she had, they fit the need and the story.

I was thrilled with the Varner's idea of the aroha. I think every woman would be thrilled to be that cherished. This piece of the story is mysterious and I am looking forward to the next book so that I can find out more.

The world the author has created is complex and creative. She has filled her world with a variety of magic, a host of fantastic (both good and evil) characters, a history that is carefully constructed and strictly adhered to, and the hope and promise of more in the future. The plot is many faceted. There are a number of things going on all at the same time on a few different levels, but they all play out nicely in the end.

What a unique and deep world Ms. Baker has created in Ruined. I'm jealous I didn't think of it myself. This is a worthy read on many levels. The Well of Souls holds the power of the people and Vale has to watch his brother's life extinguish and the mantel of power fall solely on his shoulders. Jessa is the King's healer and too great a temptation for for the new king. The odds are against the two who struggle to understand their feelings for each other. This is a must read for those with a love of romance.

An excellent read that sweeps the reader away to a realm of sexy kings, castles, and true love. The emotion and beautiful romance between the hero and heroine was so touching. There were parts where I was at the edge of my seat wondering if Vale and Jessa would have their happily ever after! I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. Kinley Baker is a talented author.

Interesting world building and characters that captivated me to the end, but there were also some tropes of "category romance" (ie - Harlequin books) that I'm personally not a huge fan of, which lead to some frustration with the book. Still, there is enough in the world to make me want to read more about the secondary characters.

This book was great. The chemistry between the two main characters is undeniable, and the romance didn't take anything away from the kingdom part of the story. Kinley is amazing, and I will definitely be reading her future books.

Ruined very quickly pulls you in with the attraction between Jessa, a Healer, and Vale, who is soon to be King in the Realm of Shadows. Love pulls them together, yet duty tears them apart. Once I started the book, I couldn’t put it down to see what Jessa and Vale would choose - love or duty.

3.5 Interesting fantasy world and premise. Started it weeks ago but got caught up in things. Baker certainly puts the hero and heroine through a lot between the traditions of their culture and the mechanisms of a lot of corrupt people. Interested in checking out the others in this series.
