Fun E-Farm
While at work, Morgan finds 5 abandoned kittens in a dumpster. She plans to keep them in the farm house they have on their land, but when she and her sister (Maya) get home Maya’s is told that she’ll be joining her mother to go visit their aunt because another aunt has died and Mrs. Cross needs the help getting things in order. Maya isn’t happy. This means she’ll miss a midnight madness sale. When she asks her parents, they say no.

The next day Mr. Cross makes Amber take Morgan to the animal shelter to take the kittens to get new homes to be adopted, but when she gets there she meets a boy from Maya’s school Todd and Morgan is horrified by how crowded it is so she tells him she’s changed her mind. She makes Amber promise not to tell her Dad and she says she’ll figure out someone to give them too.

She goes to see Alex to talk her into helping her find homes for the kittens (who she’s hiding in the barn) and also to get her to volunteer for the pet shelter. Alex says she’ll do it thinking she can check Todd out. Then she’s interrupted by a stray dog that’s always coming around and turning over the trash. Alex’s granddad calls the dog catchers, but before they can take the stray Morgan tells him he belongs to her. Morgan takes the dog and puts it in the barn with the kittens, vowing that she’ll also find a home for it.

The next day she and Alex go volunteer at the shelter. After they’re done, Alex tells Morgan they’re gonna close the shelter Monday because the Heart Center is bankrupt, Morgan is determined to save each and every animal. While chatting with the other Todaysgirls she gets an idea from Amber to set up her own pet adoption website. Amber agrees to come by and help her. She has 10 days until Maya and her mom get home.

Morgan volunteers at the shelter, and makes an agreement with Louise (the owner) to adopt some of the animals in exchange for volunteering. Morgan thinks the barn is big enough to add a few more to the mix. Off and on she worries about Todd and his smoking addiction. All the while Amber encourages her to either give her issue to God or her father when she sees Morgan is getting in over her head.

Then another animal is added, when a lady calls and begs Morgan to watch her guinea pig while she goes out of town for a family emergency. Then a man calls to ask if Morgan will sit for his goat (CAN THESE PEOPLE READ?) Alex somehow convinces Alex to help her sneak into the shelter at night and free all the pets, after cleaning up her old playhouse (which Madeline got loose and wreaks havoc on).

Alex and Morgan go to the shelter to find out the Sunday schedule to try to find out when Todd and his mother will be around and neither are there, but Alex finds a note that says the pound will be coming tomorrow. So Operation Freedom will take place that night.

Things are going relatively well. Glamor Boy’ (the gunea pig’s owner comes for him). But then Mr. Cross tells Morgan her mother and sister will be coming home that night. Rose turns out to be the answer to her prayers. Mrs. Cross sends Maya to get a wheelbarrow to move in Rose’s stuff to the barn. Morgan finds Maya at the barn and explains everything. Maya promises not to tell because the animals remind her of Rose (whose now homeless). Rose (whose come to stay with him) inside looks sad and Morgan gives her one of the kittens (Zorro) when she says she wanted to be a vet because she loves animals. Morgan then confeses everything. Rose offers to give the Hart’s part of Edith’s (the other aunts) estate if she can be part-owner.

My Thoughts:
It wasn’t bad. It had a good message about not being scared to ask for help and not getting in over your head. Also that even when you don’t think there’s a way, things have a tendency to work out. Sometimes even if you don’t have faith or ask for help. It also had a good ending. I thought Aunt Rose was going to somehow volunteer to keep all the pets or watch them. But it worked out too to have her donate the money to save the shelter and work there. But WTH was Morgan thinking? I was just waiting for one of the smaller animals to get get loose, get lost, get eaten, or die for-real. Even Maya grew on me. I started off the book not really caring for her character. In these books, she just strikes me a vapid, shallow, bitch but she had her moment where she did show some humanity. I also really liked Morgan’s idea to make a pet website and I thought it was weird that neither she nor Amber thought of a way to add pictures of the pets to the site (since Amber is the technical one)
