Undead in Brown County #2

The Vampire's Curse

**Sending out big thanks to all the new readers! I love you guys.**

The tingling, mesmerizing heat blazed even hotter in my veins as I watched him stroll towards me. There was a blatant elegance in the careless way he moved, from the slight swing of his arms to the fluid action in his long legs. He leaned over me, his eyes cold and calculating, his cool breath swirled over my cheeks like a freezing winter mist.

“You’re not afraid?”

I could not move. He was holding me prisoner without chains, without bars of any kind. He held me with the steady, penetrating focus of a hunter who will not be denied his prey. My fingers itched to touch him, to trail over his skin in slow gliding strokes. But he could not have me. No one could really have me.

Sarah Wood, after witnessing a battle between several powerful vampires on her land, is left stunned and feeling immensely guilty for having given permission for her friend, Alex, to be turned into a vampire rather than allowing him to die from his injuries. And though she tried hard to keep her sister, Katie from knowing about the whole vampire situation at their family’s Inn in the wooded hills of southern Indiana, Katie became the victim of a kidnapping herself.

Sarah is left to face the return of her mother, who had abandoned the girls when they were children. She’ll need every ounce of her bad attitude and quick temper to deal with the new surprises coming her way, including an illness that could very well leave the entire responsibility of the Inn and the vampires to fall onto the shoulders of her younger sister.

The first book in this series had so much promise. I was so sure that this book would be better since that's usually the pattern. I was mistaken. By the time I got to the end of this book I felt I had read 3 or 4 different stories. There was so much lacking in character development that I was left with only vague mental wisps of what the characters looked like. There was little consistency in them to get any concrete feel on who they really were. The only saving grace to this series is that it's an original story line with great potential. I just wanted to tell the author to slow down and let us get into the story before you change it up. I can think of several different parts that needed so much more detail and explanation. The "Breath-Giver" for instance was a major entity that needs further elaboration. Then there are the characters thrown in half-hazard to do nothing more than to move the story along. I do hope that the next book is leaps and bounds better than this one.

I don't know what happened here, after the first book I thought, ok...decent, let's see what happens in #2.

Uhhh...

It kind of went downhill for me, starting with the unexpected hook up and almost killing of the heroine and a dude from the first book (trying to not give anything away). It felt so out of the blue to me I actually flipped back to the description on my kindle to make SURE I didn't actually download book #3 or something.

It just felt like this book was missing big chunks and that was very frustrating. Don't think I will continue on with the series.

My review:

Since this was a second installment of the Undead in Brown County series, and I haven’t read the first book, I was excited to see what the series is about. I have read reviews and blurb and books excerpts from the first book, so I had a approximate picture what the first book was about. I wanted to read and review The Vampire’s Curse and it was all worth of the time spent. The Vampire’s curse is novella of 128 pages, so I read it in one sitting. I enjoyed the writing style of S.J. Wright and also the characters. It was little difficult to me to come in to the story, because I knew beforehand, that is is the second book in the series.

Regarding the plot:

I loved the plot. It was something new and refreshing, that there is a vampire colony where vampires need to have a permission to get out of the area. This was something new and unexpected, so it made the plot even more interesting to me. Sarah has just found out, that the big part of her life has been a lie and that she is a vampire warden and her mother is actually a vampire and did not die in a car accident. This is basically how The Vampire’s Curse starts and it is picking up actually from the place where the first book ended. Besides that, Sarah wants to protect her younger sister Katie from the vampire business.

Sarah’s life is even more complicated when she gets into a triangle relationship. She cares deeply about her friend Alex just to find out that he can be lethal to her and on the other hand she is getting more and more comfortable with the vampire Michael who is there for her when she needs him most. Sarah is quite confused about these two men in her life. I can already tell that the ending of the second book was a real cliff-hanger and I would have given a lot to continue with the next book.

The plot was really good!

Regarding the characters:

I liked Sarah a lot, even though some of her actions dwelling between Alex and Michael were confusing to me. Sarah is a feisty and spunky young woman, who is not afraid to stand for herself and her sister Katie. Sarah’s character as such kept me curious. I wanted and still want to find out who she will end up with.

Michael was my favorite. Even though I really liked Alex in the beginning, then due to the twist in the plot I started to grow more on Michael.

Generally:

It was a good and enjoyable read. I loved the writing style and the plot a lot. I would recommend read the first book the series prior to this one, it would create less confusion in the beginning and it would be much easier to get into the plot. But even though I started with book two in the series, I really enjoyed it!

5 stars!

This is book 2 in S.J. Wright’s wonderfully original Undead in Brown County series. I was drawn to this book because I used to live in Greenwood Indiana and Brown County was a favorite place to picnic and sometimes camp. I have lovely memories of the hilly, heavily wooded area teaming with deer and other wildlife – and a non-forgettable outdoor hot-tub experience with my sweetie, with snow falling heavily around us (we were house-sitting a friend’s isolated cabin for a weekend, gosh! Has it really been 20 years ago!).

The author captures the feel of the area well, and I very much enjoyed that aspect of the story. This novella starts off fast, and the pace is maintained superbly throughout. I liked Sarah. She’s feisty, responsible, and has a smart mouth. She also is compassionate. Katie, her younger sister, seems more ethereal; I never felt as though I got to know who she was. The vampires are powerful creatures with deadly powers and physically gorgeous. I actually got so caught up in the story that time just flew by. There is a cliffhanger ending, but luckily the next installment should be released fairly soon. I loved this story to such an extent that as soon as I had read the last word I went to Amazon, purchased the first book, The Vampire Warden, and read it a few days later.

Reading The Vampire Warden helped me to understand Sarah better and to appreciate better her protectiveness of Katie. I did not like Sarah as much, though. Sarah’s whole world view is changed in book 1 when she finds herself the successor to a family responsibility that, traditionally, has been passed down to males. It is a shock and, for me, the old “why me?” whining got a bit old…but then again, if I found out something like that I guess I’d be even more whiny and out-of-sorts, too. She gets hit with several revelations in the first book, so I need to empathize more – my bad. Anyway, I love strong kick-ass, smart-alecky heroines who can hold their own, and by the second book, Sarah gives me that in spades. This is an exciting series, and I am eagerly looking forward to finding out what happens next in Brown County. Ms Wright has imagination and style; she crafts excitement and tension into nearly every paragraph.

I was browsing through amazon and came across this book. I bought it not realizing it said book 2, so I did not read book one. I took a chance on the book even though the product preview seem more like an excerpt from the book.

This was a good read for me. I was annoyed when I had to put down my book  to do things because I wanted to read it straight through. Even though I didn't read book 1, I was able to have an idea what happen from book2. The author made sure to give brief descriptions on what took place previously.

Basically, Sarah's family has been responsible for the vampires within the containment field  on their property for the past 5 generations. This is to prevent other vampires or any other supernatural thing from getting in. With this generation the responsibility is placed on Sarah. Her mom is a vampire and she is trying to protect her sister, Katie, because of her ordeal in book 1.  As for Michael and Alex, when you think it will go one way it goes another. The author surely kept me on my toes while reading. I'm so into Alex. The other characters definitely brought a good read to the story as well. I will be looking out for book 3.

Not sure if I'll be reading book1 but I'm eagerly awaiting book3.

Ok so I really liked this, but I had some problems with it...

The characters I really enjoyed all of them! Michael is still a bit of a mystery to me but I think that is what the author is going for. I still fell for him in the first book and that carries on to this one. He's powerful but desperately in Love with Sarah.

Sarah she is feisty, strong-willed and has a strong sense of family. All these things make her a great female lead. She fell in strong for Michael but is wary of him which is to be expected. Now for Alex...

Oh I really liked him first go round then with this one well he went off the rails a bit for me. I truly don't like him at all now.

The story is great! I think this has all the makings for an amazing story but something was lacking for me here. I'm not sure if there was just not enough or if it was like way rushed and not including everything that should have been. Maybe a combination of both. That's just me though~

I will be reading the last in this book to see where all these great ppl/vamps end up.

I was really hoping this would be a step up from book 1 but it was really all over the place. The characters themselves certainly had a lot of feelings about was going on but I didn't feel any of them as the reader. I didn't get Sarah and Alex, or Sarah and Michael or Sarah and Katie or Sarah and her mom...things just happened. There was no buildup, no development just extreme situations for basically no reason. There was so much going on and it just didn't work for me.

Vampire

Not my favorite ending. There were many new characters. Vampire politics came in like a freight train. Still not a bad sequel

The Vampire’s Curse is the second installment in the ‘Undead in Brown County’ series by S.J. Wright. This addition to the series is jam packed with excitement. There’s the unexpected appearance of Sarah’s undead mother, a steamy love triangle and a power struggle going on.

Sarah is coming to terms with the task, of being a warden, that was left to her by her father but I think she is beginning to become a little bit overwhelmed by it all. It’s all still surreal to her and she can’t believe that her mother is still alive. It really knocks her self esteem. She also has to deal with the guilt of making a life or death decision for her friend Alex. Her decision comes back to bite her on the butt.

Michael’s presence still makes Sarah pretty jittery but she begins to grow closer to him and begins to trust him. Not sure if it’s a wise decision but in the heat of the moment, she has to decide whether she can trust an incarcerated vampire under her watch or trust a vampire that she gave her all to and was nearly sucked dry because of it.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a great addition to the series and gives you a bit more of an insight into Michael’s past and how he came to be in the field. We learn more about Alex’s past and connection to Sarah’s mother that was mentioned in ‘The Vampire’s Warden’. I loved the scene with Sarah and Trevor. Her cocky attitude had me cheering for her in the background hoping she would wipe the floor with him.

I think my favourite moment was near the end between Sarah and Michael. It was at that moment that all charades between them were dropped. It was quite magical reading this scene. I loved that Sarah couldn’t help but dip back into her usual defensive cocky attitude with him though. It makes the interaction between the two characters much more entertaining to read.

Overall, loved the book and would recommend it to anyone who has read ‘The Vampire’s Curse’ and enjoyed it. It would be ideal if the reader read the first book before reading this one although S.J. Wright does give a good narrative that would inform readers of any important information that would be needed to comprehend what was going on in ‘The Vampire’s Curse’.

In The Vampire’s Curse S.J. Wright takes readers further into Sarah’s story. Sarah has recently discovered she is the last in the bloodline of Vampire Wardens. We find our more about the Vampire’s who are kept captive on her family’s property, the specifics about the curse and how it has changed over the years and we finally find out the details surrounding Michael and his forced imprisonment.

There was a major twist early on in the novel that really caught me off guard and added some excitement but I wished there were a little more explanation surrounding these changes and actions because it left me feeling a little confused. I wonder if this part of the story was left as it was so that it could be further explored in the next novella of the series, The Vampire’s Redemption. One thing that I love about this series is that Wright is constantly throwing out curve balls and you cannot get too comfortable thinking the story will go a certain way – because you will most likely be wrong! I was certainly kept on my toes and that made it impossible to put this book down.

The love triangle in The Vampire’s Cure is intense, and in the second book of the series the chemistry between Sarah and Michael deepens and the novel is charged with tension. I loved getting to know Michael better through his feelings and actions towards Sarah and his character really surprised me. For the mysterious, sexy and feared vampire he was made out to be there was an emotional depth explored that I didn’t expect to find. Sarah and Michael had an almost otherworldly physical attraction and pull that couldn’t really be explained. I’m looking forward to discovering more about these relationships and the fierce connections in the next book of the series as well.

“In my head, I felt a pull. As if there was
Some force inside me reaching out for
Michael and making everything it could
From the contact. It was a whirling golden
Rope, tossed out to find its mate.”

The Vampire’s Warden was a very entertaining read and a great way to continue on with the exciting story that began in The Vampire’s Warden. Some of the lingering questions from the first book were answered but there is still so much to learn about the characters and so many places that this story could go that I am very excited for the release of the third book.

Big thank you to all the new readers! I love you guys.

She’ll need every ounce of her bad attitude and quick temper to deal with the new surprises coming her way, including an illness that could very well leave the entire responsibility of the Inn and the vampires to fall onto the shoulders of her younger sister.

The paperback version of the book is 216 pages long. The manuscript in MS Word is over 35,000 words.

This ebook contains sexual scenes, language that some might find offensive, and one scene involving alcohol consumption. Parental guidance is suggested.

The Vampire's Curse is the 2nd book in the Undead in Brown County series. I really enjoyed the first installment, and was looking forward to reading this one. It was even better! The first book was more about Sarah coming to terms with the fact that vampires existed, and that she was a vampire warden. In this book, Sarah was able to explore relationships which brought some romance to the story.

I have really enjoyed the love triangle. In the first book, I was leaning more toward Alex. In this book, I had trouble deciding for awhile. In the beginning of this book, there was some spark between Sarah and Michael that made me think that Michael was the guy to root for. Then, it went back to Alex. Then, to Michael again... I think love triangles are more interesting when there isn't a clear cut answer in who the girl should choose.

I really liked how there were chapters told from Michael's point of view. It's always nice to know what the other person is thinking and feeling. He definitely grew on me in this book. Sarah dealt with a lot of emotions in this story, such as feeling inadequate, guilt, uncertainty... On the other side – Sarah experienced love and passion so it wasn't all bad. Some of the scenes were quite steamy actually. I'd have to say that I, I mean, Sarah enjoyed that quite a bit!

There were some things going on in this book that caused me to be confused. I don't know if that was done intentionally and that things will be explained in the next installment, or if I was just slow at putting the pieces together. There was definitely some mystery involved in the story though, as well as some new faces. I was glued to the story the whole way through – it kept me interested. The ending left me hanging though, and I'm dying to read what happens next!

Sarah’s destiny is to be the warden to vampires sentenced for punishment or who just want to sleep without being disturbed. This of course comes with many complications. One of which is dark and sexy Michael. He is irresistible and trouble with a capital “T”. Even though she has a huge attraction to Michael there is another man, Alex. Alex, who was once a vampire and then was turned human, is a vampire yet again. This is one thing the council has feared because Alex is a unique and an immensely strong vampire and he wants Sarah for himself.

I got lost a few times throughout The Vampire’s Curse. I felt that there were parts missing. It went from Sarah completely in love with Alex to being completely in love with Michael and fearing Alex. The story just needed to be fleshed out a bit. I still enjoyed the premise and hope to see more of Sarah and Michael’s romance in the future.

Sarah’s character hasn’t grown much from the first book. Since this does pick up right where The Vampire’s Warden left off I knew I couldn’t expect much change but I was hoping for her to gain some confidence being that she has accepted this responsibility of being a warden. We do find out more of Michael and his back story and some of his reasons for doing what he does. Once again, wished there was more. A times I felt that there were holes in his story.

All in all, good read but as with the first book in this series I had the same problems. Fun characters just needed more padding to complete it.

So, I will give this a 3.5/5 because it was a bit better than book 1. It went in unexpected directions. I expected the series to draw out the love-triangle for the whole 5 books. But in this one, Sarah has sex with one of the guys within the first few chapters, and it seemed as if she was making her choice. It seemed as if she couldnt live without him. But then he drinks her blood without her permission and there is blood everywhere and she is so weak she cant move and she is going to die. Then the other guy comes and saves her. Suddenly, the guy that was the golden boy in book 1 is now the bad guy, and the bad boy from book 1 is now the golden boy.

I was really, really happy to find that unlike book 1, which was all Sarah, this book had alternating POVs with Michael. And he actually loves her. In book 1 I thought it was just really strong lust going on between them, but definitely not anymore and that makes me really happy. :) But Alex loves her too. Although he hurt her, it was an accident. There are 3 books left and there is definitely time for things to change, but I really hope she doesnt forgive him and go back to him in the end.

But for now, I think they have to deal with Isaiah, Michael's maker who showed up on the scene at the end and started causing trouble.

Although I didn't really like the first book, I thought I would give the series one more try. Sometimes the first book isn't that great because it's setting up the story, and it just gets better from there. Yeah. That didn't happen.

Michael was still what carried me through this story. I couldn't really get into any of the other characters. Sarah was just annoying, her sister was self absorbed (Really, you get mad at your sister? Like it was actually her fault.), and Alex was just all over the place.

Alex probably made me the maddest. It was like the author wasn't quite sure what to do with him and just made him do/into whatever. It didn't make sense. I liked how his back-story went, but his story was just destroyed from there.

And I could have done without the sudden sex scene. It was like, I hate you and am going to kill you but what the heck. Let's have sex. Really? The actual sex didn't bother me, it was just how the whole thing developed all sudden like and unnatural.

This book disappointed me way worse than the first one. The only reason I didn't give it one star was because I was able to finish it without too much difficulty. I don't think I would have made it if the book was any longer though.

This book is a little longer than it's predecessor, but it's still fairly short and a light read. I think the paper back has 216 pages, but I read more quickly on the digital format. Anyway, I did like this one, not as much as I had hoped because it went in a completely different direction than I thought it would, which isn't bad really. I just wanted to slap Alex upside the head a lot, and I am still rooting for Michael, he just seems a far more interesting, and less volatile character. The writing kept me interested and I like most of the characters, I keep flip-flopping on Alex though. There was more sex, blood and drinking in this one but none of them are over the top and they all move the story forward. The story is lacking in areas, we meet a ton of new characters and we don't really know much about them, yet, so lack of back story and development leaves the story a little lacking in spots. I do like that we got to see multiple points of view, instead of just the main heroine. I must say, I hate cliffhangers, especially when there isn't a book currently out that I can pick up. Overall it was an enjoyable story.

A continuation of the Vampire's Warden, I was looking forward to Sarah and Michael getting together. However, I was sorely disappointed, as she ended up falling for Alex. I could not for the life me understand that one. Alex seemed so weak to me as a human, I don't know what she saw in him. Now that he is a vampire, she is more physically drawn to him and ends up giving herself in all ways to him. I was very upset about that - and I still don't get it, but whatever. However, she does end up figuring out, at least in this book, that Michael is her better half (and way better in my opinion), so she somewhat redeems herself to me. So far, it seems Sarah is always sick or injured in the series. For a character that is supposed to be tough, she sure does succumb to weakness easily. I am excited to read the next part in the series, see what happens, now that Katie is turned, Michael realizes he loves Sarah, and Alex is still infatuated with her as well. Not to mention to attempted baby-making session by the young Pawnee.

My thoughts:
Once again S.J. Wright brings us a fast, compelling read. I enjoyed learning more about Sarah and the story of who she is and how she became that person. I loved Michael in the first book, and continue to love him in this one. He is my favorite character and my heart bled for him when he feels betrayed and lost. I was torn between loving Alex and hating Alex - I guess that was the author's plan. I was thrilled with the supporting characters and the roles they played in this book. Katie gets a bit of page time in the beginning...but watch out for the end!!! Once again we are left at the edge with the ending.
I will be on that edge awaiting book 3.
I felt that this book was a bit more fleshed out than book one, but still got the impression that we could have used more information in a few places.
I truly enjoyed the story and am going with the belief that more will be revealed in the next installment of the Undead in Brown County series.

I had to pick up and read this book as soon as I finished the first one. The need to know what happened to Alex was overwhelming. Then the story took a turn that I was not expecting. I was sad but also happy because it opened the door for other things. I liked that Sarah started to feel more comfortable in her role. That is until she runs into more emotional problems. It seems that they just keep piling up on the poor girl. Some of the Michael mystery has been answered, though there is still a lot of stuff that I am left confused about. I am hoping that it gets all tied up somewhere in the series.

But, even so, I still really enjoyed the story and I felt emotional for Sarah. I loved the fact that we didn't just read it from Sarah's POV in this one. It made me feel even more connected to the characters of the book. Again, tragedy at the end of the book makes me want to know what is going to happen next.

First, the iBook format was Portrait and I hate reading on my iPad if it isn't in Landscape format. According to Apple it's the template format the author choses. I'll download a sample next time before getting stuck. There's nothing the reader can do. It wasn't 'user error'. Back to the book, as with Book 1, again like a rough first draft. Some scenes are described with the perfect amount of detail and context but then important areas are glossed over. The character development and progression is spotty and action/reactions come from left field. It's conceptually a great storyline and the author has talent and potential, but after two 'novella' I have this urge to rewrite them rather than progress through the series. Maybe I should jump to the last one with the hope that improvement comes with time. Don't get me wrong, when's she's good the author is spot on, but otherwise it's like reading her story notes.

After reading both books back to back I must say, S.J. must write faster, just kidding but January is too far away to know what happens next. I haven't decided how I feel about Alex I feel like I'm on a roller coaster ride when it comes to him. I also find myself rooting for Michael the further we divulge into this series. But its these cliffhangers that is driving me nuts.

Can you tell I loved the second book in this three book series. Just a little bit huh. It just might be my favorite out of this series. This book was a nice continuation into the series and I can't wait to read book three, Vampire's Redemption coming out in January 2012, doesn't that seem so far away.

I highly suggest you read this series, its just three books and well worth it, this book can be read as a stand alone.

Actually rated it a 4 and half stars.

I thought this was a great book. The beginning of it I loved. Some where in the middle I was a little confused. It was nothing major, but I have a lot of questions and I think some of the story skipped out on details.

The book though is really fast paced always something going on. There are lots and lots of surprises. And just wait until you see who she ends up with! I was always for Michael then I switched it up to Alex in the beginning of this book. But you just wait and see how that all plays out.

I do not want to ruin the book or spoil any surprises so I am not going into any details. There is just so much going on and so many twists and turns you are not going to want to miss out on. I can't wait to read the next one.

Out of all the many vampire/paranormal books I've read there are by far the most beautifully writen. I don't like flowery, uber-illustrative descriptions, but the way Wright blends that in to her writing is gorgeous.

I was unhappy with the direction she took Sarah - is she strong, is she weak, why is she sleeping with random people all of a sudden. I felt like her character got mangled and was not developed clearly in this book. I loved the switch over to Michael although I think his character was also not consistant with the first book, now he's touchy feely, good guy?

I'm excited to read the last book and I really hope Wright fixes the main characters.

Oh, Alex...Alex...Alex. What is the matter with you? There is something not right with him. I fear for him and the ones around him!!! Ups and downs. Total craziness. Completely sucked in. In complete love with Micheal...that is for sure. Can't wait to see what this whole thing in between him and Sarah. Poor...Poor Sarah. Thank the goodness!!! Weird, crazy Pawnee man. Katie to the rescue...BUT at what cost to herself?

Completely engrossed with the whole story. Can't wait to read the third one to find out what happens!!!

I hate to give this 2 stars, but while I'm interested in the story I just don't want to keep reading. Everything happens too fast. The entire time I'm reading I'm trying to figure out what the heck is going on, not the literal actions, but the why. A two second explanation is not motivation! I'll probably read the next book, but it seems like a chore.

I really do enjoy the concept, but I wish there was more characterization and background so I can actually understand the characters, not just the situation.

Alex is now a vampire and Sarah hasn't seen him since. Katie is still scared and is planning on going back to school leaving her with Nelly and Michael. Michael and Sarah have an attraction but she doesn't believe that is ever going to move forward. Then Alex comes to her and he also drinks her blood. This makes Michael very angry and he saves her when Alex almost drains her dry. The Alex reappears but with Katie under his spell. This book continues to keep my attention and I wished that the story was longer.

So this one ends on a cliffhanger also. I kind of hate that. The first part was great. The second part switched POV's which was good for the plot but things happen that don't make sense. There should have been more details. I can't go into specifics without spoiling but concerning vampires feeding habits, what happens is not explained at all. Such a vague review. I don't know if or when I'll read the next one. That's unfortunate because the first book was good and the series had potential.

All I'm going to say is where is book three. I need to get it and I won't stop until I do. Hahaha I loved this little series. I liked Michael and Sarah. They are awesome and if Alex wasn't a little demented I would love him too. Alex makes you pause for a minute to make sure you want to get involved because he might accidentally take you out. lol loved it.

I really struggled with this book, I enjoyed the first one and had to understand what was going on so I got this, but I'm even more confused now, it felt like I was missing pages. One minute the love of her life is Alex then the next page she's in love with Michael and he her? When did that happen? Very confused!

I was very disappointed in this book. I read the first one and really liked how the dynamic was starting so I figured that the second one was just as good. Boy was I wrong it was just set-up different and skipped around or just skipped stuff in general. I will not be continuing on with this series at all.
