This is a worthy volume, packed with useful information about Edward Elgar's relationship with North America, mainly the USA. It focuses on his concert visits where it is evident that he enjoyed much interest and support. Typically for his personality, the composer had mixed feelings about the USA, although there were a few supporters, notably Julia Worthington, with whom he had mutually good relations. The book is a straightforward narrative, with good illustrations, and includes valuable extracts from letters and newspaper cuttings. There is also a detailed itinerary of Elgar's trip to the Amazon in late 1923, which is revealing.
This book would mainly appeal to those familiar with Elgar's life and work. But it is well researched, informative and therefore recommended for that audience.
