Joshua Camden, Marquess of Montfort, will do everything in his power to save his precious Graystone Manor – even take a wife he doesn’t want. But he isn’t prepared for the one demand the woman who holds the power to save his precious Graystone makes – that he remain faithful forever.
Lady Allison Townsend would rather go to her grave a spinster than marry a man who embarrasses her with his string of mistresses. But when she’s given no choice but to marry one of London’s most well-known rakes and womanizers, she refuses to go to the altar without a stipulation of her own – that the man she marries never share his bed with another woman. But neither Allison nor Joshua is prepared for the dangers they're forced to face and the choices they're forced to make to protect their happiness – as well as their hearts.

A Matter of Choice by Laura Landon is truly a nice story and comfy read.
Joshua Camden is the Marquess of Montfort who is considered London's most handsome and reputable rake is greatly despised by his father who believes he has killed his brother and heir to the dukedom. Because of his hatred, he decides to rid of all estates and assets that would go to Joshua if he becomes the duke in the furture. Having no other recourse and losing the only home left by his mother, Greystone Manor he has to find a way to gain the money to get back the one thing he and his mother loved.
Lady Allison Townsend is a whits end as she has been given an ultimatum from her brother...either she find a husband before her 25th birthday or he will find one for her. Not having any prospects worthy to become her husband, she becomes enamored with the Marquess. Unknowingly that the Marquess and her brother are friends, her brother finds a solution to her problems as well as the Marquess. He decides that they both marry...his sister making sure she gets her dowry before her birthday and the Marquess having access to the dowry to pay his family's debts. However, there is only one stipulation that Lady Allison requests and that is that he remains faithful in their marriage in order to retain the dowry.
This story has its moments of happiness and sadness. It brings to light the issues of insanity and coming to grips that difficult decisions have to made when it comes to love ones no matter how much you wish they weren't so.
Loved the plot and transitioning of the story to the end. Nicely written.
Frequently I like forced-marriage stories because they are about two people learning to work together cooperatively as a couple. In this one, I felt that the inevitable conflict was too obvious.
She has been badly wounded by a man previously. Her fiance was shot dead in bed with another man's wife. Also, her sisters are all in non-faithful relationships, at least on the husbands' part. Allison is very sensitive to the thought of people laughing at her for being cheated on. I find this interesting, as it is presented as pretty normal, and most wives in the book were dealing with the same problem. So her anxiety about being laughed at or pitied seemed sort of overblown.
Allison, of course, meets poor-little-rich-boy Montfort, and instantly dismisses him, because he's a rake. In fact, it was pretty infelicitous, as he kissed her under the impression she was his chere amie.
Through circumstances, the two are constrained to wed each other, but Allison makes Monfort sign a pre-nup specifying that if he cheats, she gets all his money, including his beloved home. I find this historically implausible, but whatever.
Then, of course, there is conflict, and she has to learn to trust him and he has to learn to start communicating, and everything is better, yay!
Overall, the infidelity theme was very pervasive. I wonder if it's an author theme or a book theme.
Read if: you are in the mood for a forced-marriage romance where the woman retains some power and wit.
Skip if: themes of infidelity are going to bore you, you want a heroine who is not defined by her fears.
This was a decently entertaining read. I liked the characters and enjoyed the storyline. The idea of a woman making her husband sign a fidelity contract before their marriage was new to me, and therefore intriguing.
I found the hero a bit of a stretch; his change to fidelity seemed a wee bit far-fetched. I think a bit of a struggle would have been a little more realistic. However, I did like him and found his anguish over his father's hatred quite believable and heart-wrenching.
There were a few typos in the Kindle version I read (nothing too out of the ordinary or annoying), but the author must have decided to change the hero's name because he was called "Gray" a couple times near the end.
I wouldn't classify this as "clean" but the love scenes were definitely not as detailed as most historical romances.
Overall, I liked it and will probably read another book by Laura Landon.
*Disclaimer: I was not paid in any way for this review. I purchased this Kindle book from Amazon. This review reflects my honest opinion of this work.
I have read this book before and didn't really like it so I thought I'd have another go. I read the first few chapters and liked it even less the second time around. I can't get past the harassment and downright stalking of the heroine by the Marquess. As a male reader I find that he had no honor or moralistic values concerning the female gender. Whatever he wanted he thought it was his right to have. He probably thought Honor was a light skirt in one of the brothels! Her brother the Earl should have seen what was happening and put a period to his unwanted and definite existence on this earth. That would have impressed upon him and the rest of the pervert what the results of their actions would lead to. I would recommend that any reader would consider skipping this farce and try another book.
I bought this book because of it's price. I've heard bad things about the cheaply priced ebooks, but this one was worth the money I paid for it and more. I liked both the lead characters. The way they met had me laughing, but I truly believed that they had come to love each other. I have another book by this author on my Nook and I think that will be up next. I also would love to try out the Victorian novels mentioned at the end of the book. I've been looking for more books set in that era.
Allison is scared that her rake-husband will be unfaithful, while Joshua deals with his hateful father. Nicely written, but the bond between the two wasn't fleshed out at all. For some reason, the author decided to go the hit-the-reader-over-the-head route with the title/theme in the last 15% of the book, which came out of nowhere and suffocated the story.
A wonderful story of redemption and faith. After seeing all of her sisters marry men they love, and then suffer the embarrassment of infidelity, Allison is determined she will be different. She has it written in the marriage contract. A true relationship blooms, beset by evil intentions and past tragedies.
Nice sweet light read. It was believable as I think the hero and heroine were already half in love with each other when they got married; just personal rational that made them not want to marry each other if given the choice. I wished Allison had more self-control in the beginning when she first met him as she was supposed to not like him. I also wished she was stronger in the early stages of marriage instead of using sex as a way to keep him. This bothered me a little. His behavior was believable throughout the marriage as I think he already liked her a great deal before the marriage. . At the end of the day, the story did live up to the title and it boiled down to trust and a choice she had to make.
This was one of the better books I've read in awhile in that the characters didn't make me completely crazy with their bad decisions. I should say it's the authors that make the characters making these horrible decisions but sometimes I find myself screaming at how idiotic the story unfolds. Not so with this one. Thank you, Laura for a decent story and not getting my blood pressure up for all the wrong reasons.
Really enjoyed the characters and banter. Tugged at the heart strings. Allie's distrust was understandable and her faith was rattled at every turn. In the end her faith was all she had to go on. Very well deserved hea. Predictable but we'll worth the read.
Too much Drama and stuffs which should have been between husband and wife in lieu of it being a regency drama was aired out which is unbelievable even the way the Duke behaved is not something an actual duke would have done in those times. Infidelity issues was over the top H was ok h was irritating and really got on my nerves, Infidelity issues was over the top.
This book is a quick read. I enjoyed the main and side characters. A forced marriage is always a rocky start and makes for an interesting story. I think Laura Landon did an excellent job with this book. I look forward to reading more of her work.
I always enjoy Laura’s books and this was no exception. A really good plot about a love born from a business arrangement. Joshua and Allison are strong, believable characters. There is plenty to enjoy from this story.
Strong heroine who is forced to marry or be financially dependent on her family. A hero who struggles with his father but is a real rogue. Their match is forced but you feel the love growing between them. It was a very nice regency.
I enjoyed reading this book would recommend it. The main characters are Joshua Camden, ninth Marquess of Montfort and Lady Allison Townsend. She only had two weeks to find a man to marry and he has to find a bride with a hefty dowery. Enjoy reading!!
This was a good book with a lot of drama and stuff going on. It is amazing how love can change a person and how per can become slaves of the opinions of people.
I read this book in just a few hours and enjoyed every minute. This is just one of many and I intend to read many more of this author. They are all thrilling.
I read it 2 days ago and already only vaguely remember the plot and don't even remember the character's names. Only more than 1 star bc I did finish...
