A few years ago, in a prison in England, Albert Michael Wensbourgh, a very violent prisoner, suddenly became a man of extreme kindness. What took place to operate such a personality change? Questioned, Wensbourgh told that an angel was the architect of this transformation, and when the psychiatrists and specialists studied the case, could not find any kind of imbalance in his mind. The case aroused the curiosity of many journalists, but it was the young Spanish writer Maria Vallejo-Nagera who had the opportunity to interview Wensbourgh.

Sorprendente. Una conversión radical, producida tras una visión de un ángel en la celda de una prisión. El arranque no me convenció, hasta que avancé y en una tarde pasé de la página 60 hasta el final. Las experiencias descritas son impactantes. Aún desde el escepticismo, merece la pena leerlo.

Brutal. Una impresionante experiencia mística (la visita de un ángel a un preso durante una noche de invierno),que el protagonista describe hasta el más mínimo detalle, produce en él un cambio radical de personalidad y de espiritualidad. Tras volcarse a partir de ese momento en ayudar al resto de los presos, acaba su condena.

¿Qué puedo decir? Me he bebido el libro en días. Esta mujer tiene una misión clara en la vida, y esta forma de hacernos vivir la fe a través de historias REALES, documentadas, incluso con fotografías, en este caso de este especial hombre y su transformación en varios años. De ser lo que algunos llamarían como -escoria de la sociedad- (después de una infancia terrible y traumática); este señor, ya entradito en años, tiene una experiencia maravillosa. Me atrevería a decir… un regalo. Dios, por alguna razón, elige… nos ama a todos pero elige, a unos poquitos, Él tendrá sus razones, para vivir cosas que están fueran del entendimiento pero que transformar de forma combativa no solo a la persona que le ocurre, sino a su entorno más próximo. Y en este caso, gracia a María, su autora y su formidable manera de contarlo, también nos llega a nosotros, lectores que, quizás muchos años después de la muerte de este especial hombre, pensamos en él y nos deja reflexionando sobre nuestra existencia, y sobre todo, lo que no podemos ver. Quizás al final, sí que va a ser que lo esencial es invisible a los ojos…

Uno de los peores libros que he leído nunca. La autora no tiene ningún conocimiento del mundo al que pertenecen los protagonistas. No sabe cómo habla un criminal ni qué le mueve y es incapaz de imaginarlo. Tampoco tiene ningún conocimiento sobre la vida espiritual. Lugar común tras lugar común, tópico tras tópico, parece que no se hubiera documentado nada antes de escribir la novela, que además es desordenada y redundante. Los rasgos fantasioso-autobiográficos de la entrevistadora son patéticos. Parece el primer ejercicio de taller de escritura de un ama de casa. Quiero creer que hay una buena intención detrás, pero si me intentan convertir con este libro, me hago musulmán.

En verdad no entiendo cuál es el objetivo de este libro. ¿De verdad se supone que debo creer que lo que relata es un hecho real?
Es una historia ligera y las partes en las que relata su infancia y estancia en la cárcel resultan interesantes, pero que me diga que Satanás pega al protagonista por las noches no puedo entenderlo.

Supongo que si eres creyente puede resultarte un buen libro pero si no lo eres es probable que desesperes un poco.

Glimpses of that other, spiritual world have always tantalized the human spirit. When such glimpses also lead to major life changes, they are utterly fascinating.

Vallejo-Nagera presents a truly fascinating story, one based on real-life events. The novel opens in one of the most feared prisons in modern-day England -- Wakefield, where Albert Michael Wensbourgh (this is not his real name) is serving time for various crimes. As the reader meets this man, it becomes immediately clear that his is a very unpleasant, hate-filled personality. This makes his subsequent transformation all the more remarkable, almost "too good to be true".

Vallejo-Nagera herself interviewed Wensbourgh, weaving herself into the story through the fictionalized character of Clara, a Spanish journalist working for a London newspaper, whose boyfriend, George, is covering the 911 tragedy in New York.

Wensbourgh's transformation is due to the intervention of an angel, a messenger from God -- thus the title: "A Messenger In the Night". As students of the miraculous know, the word "angel" comes from the Greek "aggelos", meaning "messenger". The message given to this man, whose difficult life circumstances led him to a life of crime, had such an impact on him that it completely changed him into a luminous saint.

There are books that touch the heart and soul very deeply, and are destined to live on forever in the reader's memory. This is one such book. I certainly hope that it will soon be translated into English, so that a wider audience can have faith once more in the power of Divine love, as well as in the human heart's response to that love.

This is an excelent history, it cought me since the bigining. It made me feel as if i were there suffering all the moods of the main character which went from the sweetest to the hair raising... On the other hand the character of the journalist is fantastic, it is so fresh... And the author does not miss a single detail in this story. It is a work with a very clear message where you can appreciate the Mercy and Love of God.
