I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Yawnicorn is a sweet and fun book for bedtime for little ones. The story follows a little girl who can't settle for bed. The yawnicorn takes her to different dreamlands to explore before she finally settles down to sleep. I loved the illustrations and rhyming format of this book and especially loved the magical dreamlike quality to the story and the illustrations, which, for me, made it a perfect bedtime read. This is definitely one I'm going to be looking out for for my granddaughter in a physical format.
The Yawnicorn is a beautiful picture book that’s perfect to share at bedtime. It follows a restless little redhead (which as the mum of two redheads is lovely to see!) and the Yawnicorn through different dreamlands before settling in bed to fall asleep.
The rhyming prose makes the book easy to read aloud, with a lovely gentle rhythm perfect for bedtime.
For me, the illustrations are what makes this book stand out. They are beautiful. Each page has so many small details that you see more every time you look. The illustrations all have a magical feel about them with the small stars that surround the Yawnicorn really enhancing the atmosphere of the book.
I loved reading this to my children and they thoroughly enjoyed it too. We will definitely be looking out for this when it is released on 8th June.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for the ARC ebook to review.

A rhyming picture book perfect for a bedtime story, a little girl cannot drift off to sleep, but a magical Yawnicorn comes and gives her many fun dreams until she drifts to sleep.
My goodness this made me sleepy in a perfect way, it’s so relaxing and magical. It does literally what it is supposed to do. It’s the perfect before bed picture book, it has a beautiful rhyming tone to the story and it is easy to follow.
It’s so descriptive and the beautiful vibrant illustrations go perfectly with it, taking you on an adventure of fun and magic, going to many different places, ideas of what exactly you can dream about all night. I really loved how it takes you to these places, filling up the mind with such wonder.
I really enjoyed how magical it all felt in this book, taking you to a sweet place all with the wonderful help of a Yawnicorn, which that name alone is super precious. I really recommend this as a bedtime story, and read this to them they will have their mind filled with so many magical places, dreaming that the Yawnicorn will show up take them to wondrous places, they will easily sleep after it as it’s so beautifully done.
I was first attracted to this book by the brilliant ‘play on words’ of the title, ‘Yawnicorn’, that, alone deserves all the stars before the pages start to be turned!
The Yawnicorn by Emily Hamilton is one of the best bedtime books we have discovered, it has everything that fits into a settled bed routine for little ones. With magical illustrations, a funny, yet gentle storyline written with a simple poetic prose, I would recommend this book for everyone, regardless of age!
It made me feel relaxed and slightly sleepy whilst reading it aloud to my Granddaughter (almost 2). She sat quietly for the duration of the book, which is quite an achievement as she’s at the age where it’s tricky to get consistent concentration for more than a minute or so!
This book offers exactly what it suggests, I couldn’t fault it. Five solid stars. Thank you to Toppsta and the publisher for our review copy.
“He’s made up of starshine and magic and light/he’ll help find a dreamland/ for you that’s just right.”
The Yawnicorn takes children to whatever magical dreamland they can imagine. Whether it’s sitting on puffy clouds & sliding down rainbows, having a musical parade, exploring in the jungle, or diving deep under the sea with turtles and whales, these adventures will leave little ones yawning & ready for bed. A bedtime picture book with magical illustrations featuring a very special unicorn, specially designed to help children fall asleep.
My daughter loves unicorns so she was immediately drawn to this cover. After reading the title & doing a quick skim, I knew she’d enjoy this story. We’ve read it every night since last week! She loves the rhymes & makes me wait longer than usual to turn the page so she can look at the pictures. The illustrations are dreamlike & full of sparkle, giving life to the magic of the unicorn 🦄 Highly recommend!
My review will be live on my blog - donnasbookblog on 8th June 2023 - publication day!
My 5 year old daughter is absolutely mad on Unicorns at the moment so I knew that this book would be one that she really enjoyed and she loved it even more than I had expected!
We read the book together last night and she loved every page. It was well written and had a lovely flow to the story, the writing style worked really well for a book to be read at bedtime, it was at the perfect pace and she loved that she could read it to me.
The illustrations are lovely and they really help bring the story to life – I know this was a massive hit with her as she has already asked if we can read the book again at bedtime tonight!
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and it is a lovely bedtime book!
The Yawnicon is an adorable bedtime book for young readers or to be read aloud at bedtime. Emily Hamilton has created a magical poetical read that should help any youngster under 4 doze off to sleep. The illustrations are charming and have a dreamlike quality. The prose is rhyming and through repetition will be perfect too read along with. This could be a firm bed time favourite for many children and with the love of unicorns so popular among young children this is the perfect book to be shared between young and old .
This is the companion you want every night when you go to sleep. The Yawnicorn that will take you away on magical adventures in your dreams, and make nighttime, and sleeping a very pleasant thing.
Whether it's sliding down rainbows, diving in the ocean, or listening to an animal band, the Yawnicorn is your companion to adventurous dreams. The illustrations were beautiful, vibrant colors, lots of movement and spectacular detail.
This is a great book for little ones who love unicorns and magic, and might be having trouble falling asleep.
This was really cute! I enjoyed the rhyming text and the fanciful illustrations. I will definitely have to purchase for my school library for all my unicorn obsessed students :)
Amazing illustrations and rhyming text tell the story of a little girl who cannot seem to fall asleep so she follows the yawnicorn through dreamland until she finally snuggles down ready to sleep. A whimsical bedtime story. This book could also be used in story time.
This is one of the cutest bedtime books I've read in a long time! It makes me want to go on night time adventures with my own Yawnicorn! I definitely recommend this to parents with littles who don't like to settle down for bed.
I originally rated this three stars, but now that I've read it out loud for storytime, I like it even more than I did originally. This book is truly meant to be read aloud, and it adds so much to the experience to say the words and to punctuate things with yawns. The kids really enjoyed this, and one of them was excited about the giant whale in one of the illustrations. Even though this book doesn't have much of a storyline, it flows really well, and it's imaginative and fun.
