What a heartwarming read. Okay you don't get much in the way of descriptions of the characters but it is enough to get a feel for their personalities and base core instincts. The death of her father has left her and her brother destitute and the only means to get money (according) to their solicitor is to marry. One option still stands, borrowing money from her uncle. However her visit to him is cut short when she sees a small girl being badly treated by onlookers. Taking the girl under her wing sees the only way. What happens when the little girl enters their household and whispers "tick tock" to the watch she keeps clasped in her hands?
