Many designers use folding techniques in their work to make three-dimensional forms from two-dimensional sheets of fabric, cardboard, plastic, metal, and many other materials. This unique book explains the key techniques of folding, such as pleated surfaces, curved folding and crumpling. An elegant, practical handbook, it covers over 70 techniques explained by clear step-by-step drawings, crease-pattern drawings, and specially commissioned photography.
This is a great book for people who are looking for more abstract origami techniques. The steps are well illustrated and pretty easy to follow. For architects this is also a great source of inspiration for structural and design methods. My only critique would be that it's rather short.
I found this gem at the Magma bookshop in London as I was looking for something on pleats and folds that was not textile specific or traditional origami. It seemed a hard ask until I discovered this book by Paul Jackson. It starts with some basic folds as well as excercises in crumpling that are a good way for people (like myself) that are not familiar with the range and qualities of diferrent papers. I used the excercises in my 'Lightness' class at OCADU to introduce students to folds, deployable structures and as part of their project on solar shade. There is a DVD that accompanies the book which is okay, but the online videos are especially helpful for more involved techniques. Both text and images are very clear and easy to follow in the book with the choice of b/w good with minimal colour used where necessary in diagrams.
The techniques are basic, and only a handful of more complex folded surfaces are presented. Many of the things we already learn intuitively as children. Nevertheless, it is a nice foundation for designers on which to base new ideas and concepts.
Nor beginner friendly at all. Have to use this for a class but there are almost no instructions what so ever so you end up having to guess, mess up and throw away your work over and over again
Folding paper is not just about origami...it is a skill that comes up in book arts (for example) all the time, and this meticulous and beautifully photographed book will give any artist who works with paper (or fabric) a ton of ideas.
