This book is a summary of what I learned of ornamental horticulture and its related plant sciences at the University of Illinois put into layman's terms. It is also a summary of my own experience of working with plants. The book includes my horticultural philosophy, which I try to keep broad and objective for everyone, yet I have opinions. The organic, naturalistic, native plant movement has definitely influenced the manual, yet it includes a good number of plants from other lands commonly used in the trade, and the author still likes to have some areas very colorful and decorative.
