Mireya is back where she started, but everything is different now.

She’s at the top of her class on the military base, her doting parents are actually proud of her, and she’s surrounded by the friends and classmates she’s known all her safe, protected, predictable life.

Everything would be perfect if it weren’t for the troubling dreams and the occasional hallucinations she gets. Mireya knows the visions aren’t real, but they feel like memories.

Of a life she never had.

All the vivid images have two things in common—a disturbing sense of foreboding—and a gorgeous blue-eyed guy she’s never met.

When she comes face to face with him, she’s in shock. Even more so when he insists she needs to flee the base immediately and make a new home at a mysterious place called the Haven.

He tells her he loves her and warns that her life is in danger, and so are all her friends.

Unsure what to believe and whom to trust, Mireya must decide whether to leave her home and lead her friends into the unknown.

After all, her fractured memories include mentions of the Lost Boys… and everyone knows Neverland holds many wonders.

And threats.

In this second book of the Designed series, Mireya will have to come to terms with who and what she is and use all her wits to navigate a new world—one that may be exactly where she belongs.

Or not.

The DESIGNED series is gripping and romantic, action-packed dystopian science fiction set in a near future America and is perfect for readers who loved Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games, Veronica Roth's Divergent, Scott Westerfield's Uglies, K.A. Riley's Cure Chronicles and Resistance Trilogy, and Kiera Cass' Selection series.

I love writing, and I love LOVE. I've been writing seriously since 2010 and have written 35 books (and counting!) Most of them are YA and NA romantic fantasy. There's a dash of paranormal and dystopian romance in my book list as well.

I'm honored to be an Amazon bestseller and multi-award winning author of the bestselling Hidden Saga, which is a 10-book Fae fantasy romance series, the heart-pounding Crimson Accord vampire romance series.

My new Romantasy series, Age of Fae, begins with A Court Bright and Broken, which released on Valentine's Day 2025. Book 2, A Kingdom Ruthless and Radiant comes out May 23rd 2025!

I live in Rhode Island where I write in my car at the beach year round and sometimes crave the heat and humidity of Mississippi, where I grew up. I love hearing from my readers! Reach out and say hi anytime.

4.5⭐️

Very good 2nd part of the series.
As I mentioned in the review of the first book, I loved the end coming through with the ‘threat’ and Mireya losing her memories. I was curious to know how what when where this would all be fixed and where the story would bring us.

And wow. It certainly brought us somewhere I’m always: curious about what is *really* going on in the Haven 🤨, shocked 😧, kicking my feet for the cute Mireya&Elias story🤭and feeling bad for Heath ☹️

Overall again very well written. I liked the turn of events for this story; very different from the 1st book but also…. Slightly better🤭 definitely a setting I did NOT expect, certainly not a second love story?? (HEATH💔)

Also Wtf is this ending. How can u make me switch sides from Elias to Heath in 1 page lmao. Sure I felt bad for Heath but the love story was too good(!!!!)

Love:
🧬 The vibe
🧬 The way it makes me suspicious of everybody and everything
🧬 The set up of the Haven
🧬 The friendship that really comes to life in the first part of the book

Questionable:
🌱 Seemed so forced that Mireya and Elias ‘had’ to sleep in 1 bed to make sure she’s not getting away?🤣 um k. Are the other 2 girls getting that treatment too? That’s so random. To be fair I LIKED it but it did seem too forced, that would never happen

Final thoughts: how am I supposed to wait for the 3rd book until mid/end APRIL. That 6 months from now 😭

I was excited to read more about Mireya and Heath’s journey. However, I was pleasantly surprised by a change in the narrative. Amy definitely knows how to keep you on your toes 😉 She is a talented author who writes in a language that is very relatable to the reader. The book is very well paced, and you don’t have to wonder what is going to happen next for long. And in perfect Amy fashion, she leaves you hanging on a cliff, anxious for the next installment!

A Big Step Forward

Defiant is the continuation of the story started in Designed: A Young Adult Dystopian Book. As the story opens, Mireya, an older teenager who had escaped the Air Force base she was living on, finds the truth of her birth. She and all of her friends are genetically engineered life forms, referred to as Genesapiens.

Unfortunately, after tasting the freedom of the outside world in the company of the son of the founder of this gene tech, Heath Gideon, Mireya is recaptured and returned to the Air Force base. However, Heath switches her daily pills, unbeknownst to his Father.

The new green pills are the key to a different life for Mireya and her friends. Heath slips a micro video player into the thorn of a rose he sends to her with escape instructions. Because the green pills are clearing her mind of the programmed nanobots Gideon Pharmaceuticals has been using to control her and her friends, Mireya is ready to make a break for freedom.

Events move rapidly for Mireya and friends, they have to leave one of their own behind due to an injury. Soon they are on their way towards where they believe The Haven exists. The girls are freaked out by their first night sleeping under the stars and are jumping at every noise.

Arising the next morning, Mireya realized her whole life has changed. A boy from The Haven wakes them up. These Genesapien girls, or Gebbys as they are called, are in for the shock of their lives.

What I love so much about Amy Patrick's writing is how relatable her characters are. Everyone identifies with the frustration of the feeling of being controlled, young adult or older. Her themes are contemporary. Our entire world is struggling with the issue of genetic modification.

Defiant grabs you in your hopes and fears for the future and takes you on a wildly speculative ride. Where the characters are going and how the situation will be resolved is not yet determined. As readers, we will have to wait and see.

Amy does magic with her words yet again! She has such a way with words that you are transported from this world into hers! The words melt into the pages, and you forget you're even reading to begin with! The sequel did not disappoint, and I will be anxiously waiting for the 3rd installment! Do yourself a favor and dive into this series!

Thanks Amy love all the series you have written..........
Defiant is better than the first in this series, for me anyway.
From start to finish no messing about just how I like it.
Easy reading and enjoyable.
Can not wait until the next part of this series.
Amy has done it again, you feel like you know what the characters are actually feeling and going through, without going on and on.
Left it on a good cliff hanger at the end, I love where the story is going.
Looking forward to reading book 3..........

A great follow up to the first book! I loved how Mireya got to explore a whole nother world and she got to experience it with people she knew. After the conclusion of the first book, I was kinda expecting the second one to be a repeat of her escaping for the first half, but it thankfully wasn’t.

Although I like Amy Patrick’s writing, I have a few gripes with it.

First being I think her books (I’ve only read Designed 1 & 2) are too short. I understand they’re YA but they could easily be 300 pages if she expanded more on the world and the side characters backgrounds, and let the story breathe. It was awfully fast paced and I feel it could be slowed down a bit and it wouldn’t lose the reader’s interest.

Second, there seem to be little to no consequences for Mireya and the LI’s actions. Of course, they took risks like escaping or telling the other how they felt, but it seemed as though for the most part, everything worked out the majority of the time. Like LI #2 being so apprehensive about the eligibility trials and then he was worried about nothing.

Hopefully that makes sense. I’m looking forward to the next book! Although I’m a little sad this will be the final installment. Designed is a very interesting and different take on dystopian America and i really wish the world and story were expanded upon and flushed out more in each book.

The start of this book felt a bit like deja vu. We're back to the beginning again, even though Heath is trying to defy his father and get Mireya back again.

As soon as the characters made it to Haven, I realised it was going to be one of those books that introduces a love interest, only to throw him over for a new love interest in book 2. I am not personally a fan of love triangles, particularly when it's obvious who the FMC is going to choose in the end. It's up their (in my opinion) with the miscommunication trope, except in this case, instead of the two MCs having an honest conversation, the MC needs to be honest with themself.

If you love love triangles, though, this might be a win for you. It was interesting seeing how the Gebbies had organised their society in the tree tops, and the way they dealt with the limited number of females.

Wow, what a great addition to the Designed series. Amy patrick has a knack for writing characters that you either love, hate, or both, yet they are always relatable in some way. Mireya's second attempt at escaping the base is more successful than the first, but it is not without sacrifice. When one friend has to be left behind, Mireya worries the rest of the kids on base will not have a chance. And the one place she thought should be safe for her and the other escapees comes with its own risks. Did Mireya make the right choice by putting herself and her friends in Elias' care or would she have been better off staying on base with her friends? This is definitely a must read!

I've read every book that Amy Patrick has published so far and this latest one does not disappoint. It's a very fast, easy read, with an engaging romance in a science fiction world. This sequel to Designed takes place in a new location with some different characters and leaves us in the end on a cliffhanger because we know that the characters from the first book will be joined with the new characters and mayhem will ensue! I can't wait to read the final book in the series to see how it all goes down.

Amazing adventure for Mireya and the girls, escaping the base was a huge risk that paid off. They discovered something special and it’s like their whole world opened up. This is an exciting continuation of a new series that’s great for young adults and lovers of science fiction type books. The idea is creative and unique with strong and capable young leaders. The books must be read in order to understand why they have left the base and what the world looks like for them. I was lucky an early copy and have written my review honestly to encourage new readers.

Superb

The continuation of this story just got so much better. The first book was so good now this one just gave me the chills. I couldn't stop reading. How insane was the last 4 chapters. Now that is a game Changer. Now that love triangles for the next book will have me eating my nails because I love both of the guys🥹 the next book will either break my heart or amy will be giving her two mates?😁 I wish 😅 fantastic read. Heres 🥂 for your next book to release, whenever that is. I can't wait.

If you haven't read Designed, book 1 of this series, Do. It. Now. Designed was amazing but Defiant.. clearly I wasn't ready lol I thought I knew what I wanted from Defiant but Amy Patrick sure showed me!! This was even better than anything I imagined as I impatiently waited for book 2. Never. It's just one word but it holds so much promise and filled me with such anticipation for the 3rd book coming really, really soon I hope!!! Hello book hangover. Thanks to Amy, we meet again.

The storyline is definitely interesting, but this book was totally weird and strange. First of all, the boys at the haven reminded me so much of Lord of the Flies- they were all driven by stuff they wanted (the girls.) The whole thing was very strange with the contest and the winners. Is there no women’s rights or do they even get a say in the what happens to them?! Honestly I was very weirded out and appalled by this book.

Hi Tech Swiss Family Robinson

Although it's clearly stated and written as young adult, I still very much enjoy this series. It's full of dialogue so you really come to know the characters. The storyline is intriguing as I love anything to do with AI. Yes there's plenty of teenage romance but it just brings me back to my younger days.

There was too big a focus on the romance aspect and not enough on the actual plot and mystery from the first book. The change in location was a nice way of throwing our main character into a much-needed change of pace with some challenges, but I did not like what was going on at the have. The cliffhanger was interesting, but not really enough to draw me in for the upcoming third book.

This book was good, I liked the plot but I didn’t like the characters that much. Mireya was annoying and kinda dumb sometimes. I liked Elias in the beginning, he was so protective and great but then he started going downhill, and at the end he was so controlling and I don’t like him anymore. The plot was interesting, but boring sometimes.

The book started off a little slow and I was worried considering how much I loved Designed but man it PICKS UP. And ends on a cliffhanger (BOOOOO!) but it was a great read and I can’t wait for Destined!

I absolutely loved this second book if possible even more than the first. Mireya seems to have visions and she’s never sure what is actually real or not. Is she really in danger as she’s told. Ready for the next.

Like the first book, this took me through a whirlwind of emotions, the cliffhanger this book ended on was frustrating and i was shocked when the book ended, i was so into the story!

Glad I can start the final instalment straight away and I’m hoping she chooses the guy I want her to!

Lost the plot

Too much of the "romance" and not enough of the plot. Also, calling your partner "ding bat" is demeaning, and not endearing.
