Rei Tōma (Japanese: 藤間 麗,Tōma Rei) has been drawing since childhood, but she only began drawing manga because of her graduation project in design school. When she drew a short-story manga, "Help me dentist" (ヘルプ me デンティスト), it attracted a publisher's attention and she made her debut right away. Her magnificent art style became popular, and after she debuted as a manga artist, she became known as an illustrator for novels and video game character designs.

Dawn of the Arcana is her first long-running manga series, and it has been a hit in Japan, selling over a million copies.

Knowing that her brother Sogetsu might still be alive is one revelation that Rangetsu wasn’t counting on, but there’s at least one other big surprise left and it’s going to really change a lot of the series’ dynamics, provided anybody involved lives long enough to enjoy it.

Well, I hadn’t seen that one coming right at this second, but the air is finally cleared between Rangetsu and Tenyou and that means… less than Rangetsu thinks. She’s worried he won’t accept her, but we’ve had indications for a while now that Tenyou’s a bonafide Rangetsu-sexual, so she should have a little more faith in the prince.

One thing I don’t know that this series has ever been good at is balancing its tonal shifts, considering we’re suddenly in for some ridiculous fooling around while the first volume had a brutally implied rape in it. There are definitely some… odd… interjections of comic relief where it might have been best to let the story ride along as it was.

That all being said, both parts of the story are SO strong that it overcomes that little hiccup for the most part. We get some rather… Game of Thrones-y revelations about certain characters’ motivations and more awkward posturing between Tenyou and Rangestsu that prompts the only gender reveal party I ever wanted to see.

Once Rangetsu and Tenyou get pulled into some romantic side stuff it gets equal parts hot and heavy and also ‘how do we do thing’, leading to a hilarious drunken evening between Rangetsu and Taihaku in possibly the book’s funniest chapter (Taihaku as the droll straight man is the perfect use of his character).

Opposite all this is the mission to rescue Sogetsu, as the emperor’s plans are laid out and are very believable for one who desperately clings to the last shreds of life and power. But you don’t get to the top by being an idiot, either (Hollywood and late-stage capitalism excepted), and that does not bode well as the volume comes to a close that imperils basically everybody in one fell swoop.

If there’s a spot where the story wobbles, it is with the Sogetsu sections, which we kind of knew were torture porn-y, but we’ve only had Rangetsu’s memory moving her forward and, besides “nice”, Sogetsu didn’t have much of a personality.

They try and flesh it out some, but it… boils down to “nice”. With a side order of split personality that doesn’t really seem to go anywhere or contribute anything. I get it as a dissociative survival mechanism, but it doesn’t quite play out as natural and feels kind of contrived.

Presumably we’ll see this fleshed out further, but, again, we’ll need to see how this current rescue mission plays out because it’s not going well, charitably speaking, as we close the curtain. Okay, there’s also a pretty cute hot pot party at the end because of reasons.

4.5 stars - it’s the whole package, as is typical for the series, but I do think it’s got a couple dings where bits don’t integrate quite like they should. Still though, it’s hard not to want that next volume immediately as we apparently approach the end game for this particular part of the narrative.

The story really heats up in volume 8 of The King’s Beast. For the fans of the Rangetsu and Tenyou ship, you are bound to be pleased as things get a bit too hot to handle. They make their feelings known and that ship sails...awkwardly, but perhaps charming. As I’m not a personal fan of their forbidden love, I found that section a bit of a snooze. Rangetsu’s love life is the least interesting thing about her in my opinion. At least I can always count on the art being pretty and that section had few words, so it was easy to flip through. That being said, I think it’s sure to please others and whatever floats your boat.

Things start to pick up once Sogetsu’s rescue mission is underway. I’m still completely thrown by the twist that he is alive! How did I not see that coming? Rangetsu tries to save her brother from a truly horrific set of circumstances that can only be likened to the doings of Ramsay Snow (Game of Thrones, anybody?). The scenes that transpire are wild, if a bit over-the-top. The violence isn’t depicted in great detail, but some may find it a bit intense. (Spoiler: Because of Sogetsu’s healing power, his organs are being removed and fed to the dying Emperor in hopes that it will allow him to become immortal. A character holding Sogetsu’s liver is shown.) The scenes with Sogetsu are tense but also confusing. The action and dialogue aren’t depicted with much clarity. Maybe it is intentionally disorienting?

Sogetsu unfortunately remains underdeveloped and his coping strategy for surviving this torture is unexplored. Is his personality disorder problematic? I can’t really say, but it does feel like a feeble attempt from the author to come off as edgy. Perhaps it will be explored more in later volumes, but for now, it’s a curious but ultimately, weak sauce.

The tense rescue mission and the gut-wrenching reunion are the stand-out parts for me in this volume. Just when I thought Rangetsu finding her brother was a bit too easy, turns out the emperor is more clever than I thought. The ending to this volume is a nail-biter, and I am equal parts excited and concerned about where the story will take us from here.

The parts with Rangetsu and Tenyou are so adorable and sweet as their relationship develops and her being shy over trying to be with him. I love all the characters and even Taihaku is just the best friend either of them could have in this moment. He cracks me up. But then as you get to the end you're once more reminded of how dark this world truly is and how beast servants are looked down on. No spoilers but if they're going to end things like that they need to put out these books faster.

Okay, so I skipped a lot of reviews for this series because... Well, I'm greatly behind on reviews, I read Vols. 3 to 5 quite some time ago, I read Vols. 6 to 8 more recently but all at once, and I am not good at remembering what events correspond to what volume of a manga under those circumstances. Besides, I think my manga reviews can get really repetitive unless something big happens for me to talk about. That said, consider this a review for Vols. 6 to 8, because they were all five stars for very similar reasons and I'm going to be talking about those chapters with overlap here.

The one thing I've found in this past year or so as I'm delving seriously more into manga for the first time is that I really, really appreciate when the first few volumes focus more on characters and set-up rather than immediately jumping into the main storyline. I've always been a very character-focused reader with a deep, abiding love for character-driven stories; similarly, my taste in television delves toward shows with ensemble casts that have enough downtime to let the characters build relationships with one another and establish individual identities outside of the roles in the main stories. (So basically, very few of my favorite shows are made-for-streaming. Very, very few.)

Make me care about the characters as people. Let me see parts of them that the main storyline can't expose. Make me feel like characters actually relate to, interact with, and have dynamics with and feelings about each other. I crave that intimacy in a way I can't begin to describe. You can do it as the main story continues, because "filler" done well does most of the character building. Or, you can take the route The King's Beast took: place the characters where they need to be, give them time to define who they are to themselves and to each other, and then dive into the main story full force.

The King's Beast isn't the only story or even the only manga to take this approach, I know, but GOD the character work in the early volumes does so much heavy-lifting and evokes so much in the reader, and you don't even fully realize it until the main storyline truly picks up in the more plotty Vols. 6 to 8. You've known objectively that these characters aren't safe where they are despite the shenanigans and bonding and budding relationships of all kinds, but when suddenly faced with the reality of the stakes full-force, it really hits home. You've been made to care about these characters, and now they're going up against this??? You knew that all along, but still. It's jarring to suddenly have it be the focus. Jarring in the absolute best way, because you are invested in the characters already and want what's best for them.

Throughout Vols. 6 to 8, substantial progress is finally made in Rangetsu's investigation into her twin brother's fate, and what she uncovers quickly reveals to her and her allies that she is in very real danger and that everyone else might be, too. And it feels like a real threat!!! All too often, when stories don't do enough character-building, threats to the safety of those characters induce more anticipation for the action or revelation of the truth rather than any fear for the characters or speculation on how they're going to deal with a change in the status quo. That's perfectly fine for some readers and some stories, but I always prefer being pulled fully into the danger in a way that kind of storytelling doesn't achieve for me. And, yeah, the whole enslavement thing is very, very obviously a fucked up element of this world already, but we've had time to adapt to that reality at this point. It's a critical aspect of the world, and the characters have directly interacted with it; while it's not background noise by any means, it's a status quo plot point.

Then Vol. 8 comes along and fucking says Like.... Excuse me... FUCKING WHAT??? It's such a visceral, nauseating, fucked-up reality that is now being introduced to this world that will now flavor interactions within it and how the plot itself moves forward. And I don't think it would have been nearly as effective if it came any sooner, because if it came while our brain's were in introduction mode, it would just be accepted as a reality of the story we're dealing with that's going to flavor everything that happens, just like the enslavement of the Ajin. Not unimportant, but a basic aspect of the worldbuilding that will be dealt with. Nope, this one's a suckerpunch that doesn't come until later and I am HERE for how it forces you to recontextualize a story you thought you knew the rules for. I WANT to be lulled into complacency only for fucked up shit to show up when I least expect it, THANK YOU!!!

Beyond that, I also want to comment on the fondness I've developed for how emotions are drawn in this. Whether it's the simplified almost stick-figures or the intricate close-ups, the expressions in this series really hit home and it really finds its stride at about Vol. 5.

And finally, thank you for portraying my favorite moments of girl-dressed-as-boy stories: the ones where the love interest is fully convinced the person he's falling in love with is a man, has a minor crisis about it, shurgs and accepts it, and kisses that person anyway. I do not CARE if that "girl" truly sees herself as a girl, you are now diagnosed with bisexual because you fell for someone you fully and totally believed was a man. Welcome to the club, Tenyou. No matter what you say later in the series, you do NOT get a refund. You are no longer straight to me. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. You have been claimed.

Anyway uhhhh yeah I've decided I want physical copies of these now. If I wasn't fully on board before (I was), I certainly am now. It's on my Christmas list. My relatives do not read and do not know what manga is. Wish me good luck on actually getting them.

Ririn, Boku, Kougai, Taihaku, Tenyou, and Rangetsu gather as a secret conspiracy within the palace is revealed. Secrets unfold, and hands throw themselves out searching for the perpetrator. Rangetsu is shaken when she finds out the truth about the disappearance of Sogetsu. Meanwhile, Tenyou's feelings for Rangetsu are growing, and Taihaku gives Rangetsu advice about romance. Ririn discovers a secret that has her watching Rangetsu more closely, and she is guilty of the actions she took in order to gain Tenyou's attention. All it took was one action to unravel Tenyou and Rangetsu's lives, and now comes the time to discover what really happened.

"Will there come a day when I can forgive others the way you've forgiven me?"
-Rangetsu
The King's Beast, Vol. 8, was so close to reaching five stars. The first half wasn't my favourite because of the scope of mutual pining and romance. Rangetsu and Tenyou spend a lot of time thinking about their affection for each other, which is cute and long awaited but not what I'm most interested in! I wanted the first half to be a good mixture of romance and plot, but it was 100% romance. One of the most supposed-to-be climatic scenes happened in this volume, which felt underwhelming. While I wanted it to be a gigantic reveal, I could see the wisdom in Rei Tōma's decision.

Rangetsu is a strong female protagonist who undergoes a magnificent character arc. She goes from being rage-filled, suspicious, and cold-hearted to being loyal, caring, humorous, and kind. I loved that the event that happened here was not revealed by accident or by someone else. It was a milestone moment in her character where she took matters into her own hands and decided to reveal the secret on her own accord. I loved to see her do that!

The tone does shift in the story. The first half is romantic, filled with awkward Rangetsu and humorous moments between her and Taihaku. The second half takes a full turn, becoming instantly darker, more serious, and shocking. While I love this series so much, if I look at the series as a whole, there are some things I have to nitpick. The whole eight volumes lack a strong sense of continuity. The first couple of books were filled with tension, court politics, flashbacks, emotion, and action. There were several fight scenes and character-building scenes that complimented the story.

The mangaka explores an interesting aspect of the power imbalance between the Ajin and humans. There were interesting explorations of different characters, until it came to a standstill in volume 6. The attempted r*** scene was disgusting, and despite showing the brutal way that the woman and Ajin are used, it felt unnecessary in the end. It seemed like there were no consequences for Kougai, which disappointed me greatly. It felt like Rangetsu didn't seem to mind Kougai's actions all that much anymore.

I enjoyed learning more about Ririn, even if she's unlikable, and I can see a possible (?) character redemption arc for her! It was hilarious to see Taihaku be like a dating counsellor for Rangetsu and Tenyou, and I adore their relationship! I'm glad to see that the story is starting to edge its way back to a more action-packed, serious story. There were some scenes in here that were so heartbreaking. I can't wait to read volume nine!

Bro the emperor is disgusting. I hate him so much. I can’t believe how much achieving immortality can mess with a person. It reminds me of a real life story, I once read in social studies. I can’t believe people would go as far as hurting others just to become immortal. I feel so bad for Sogetsu! He was just an innocent Ajin who was forcefully taken to the palace. Messed with by princess RinRin just bec she was jealous. And now he’s getting his organs stolen from him. Just bec the emperor thinks he can achieve immortality by cutting out SOMEONES ORGANS and using them for himself. I can’t even believe what I’m typing rn.

The volume started off so wholesome with Prince Tenyou and Rangetsu. It was so cute and sweet. Then all of a sudden Prince Tenyou and Rangetsu r trapped w Sogetsu. Tbh I speculated it was a trap. Bec Rangetsu was able to find Sogetsu so easily. And there were no guards or anything. It was def super suspicious. Now they’re all trapped. Princess RinRin better come and save them or something. She has commited too much of a sin to not come and help them.

When I started reading this manga I could not stand Princess RinRin and Boku(prince Kougai’s irrelevant Beast servant). I still don’t! I find them disgusting bec of what they did to Sogetsu. And she did all of that just bec she liked Prince Tenyou. Who’s literally her blood related brother. Incest much. Other than that she’s lowkey kind of redeeming herself. But Boku def isn’t. Bec he feels no sense of remorse/reget for what he did. All he cares abt is Princess RinRin. Which I don’t get bec she’s a disgusting and terrible person. But ig they’re a perfect match bec he’s just as bad. I’m happy that Princess RinRin is helping them though. Unlike Boku who’s absolutely useless.

Overall this volume was realyyyy good. It gets a 5/5. This series is too good. Every Volume never fails to amaze me!!

What they’re doing to Sogetsu is much worse than I thought, the poor thing. I actually considered that he might be the emperor’s concubine but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Rather, it’s much worse than that. And he has developed a multiple personality disorder in the process. It’s touching that he doesn’t fight back in order to protect his sister from going through the same exact thing. It is terrible that beast servants do not have equal rights. I hope that Prince Tenyou will change that once he ascends the throne.

It's a bit odd to see Rangetsu dressed like the rest of the princess' handmaidens, but it seems to serve it's purpose getting her into the palace. The twins find each other, but it seems getting Sogetsu out won't be as easy as they hoped, especially if they can't break the chain holding him. For all their planning, it looks like both Rangetsu and Tenyou are in more than a bit of trouble with the emperor and his beast servant.

This was a great volume! As we reach the climax of arc one of the main story, the action is developing really nicely.

I love how some of the plot holes are being filled gradually rather than by info-dumping the reader; sure, there’s a lot of explanation to people’s actions, but it’s just complementary to previous plot points.

I wasn’t a fan of the cliffhanger, but I can understand why it’s done as it’s a great way to set the scene for the final ‘showdown’ between Rangetsu and the Emperor.

Excited for more 🙌🏻

Sogetsu is alive. Prince Tenyou is in love with Rangetsu. Rangetsu is in love with Tenyou. Lots of good stuff. Except that Tenyou still doesn't know that Rangetsu is a girl. Confession time!! And all the fluff and angst that goes with it~

Then on to rescue Sogetsu with careful diversions and sneaking.

Also, is it me, or does the pacing seem a little fast?

The way Tenyou responds when Rangetsu tells him that she’s actually a girl is priceless. It is the most underwhelming reaction (in a good way) I have ever seen.

I also think I may be crushing on Sogetsu even though I literally just met him.

I just read three of these In one day and worked an 8.5 hour shift at work heheheheh.
These mangas make me happy. ;)

Oh wow! Finally, Rangetsu told Prince Tenyou! They are so cute together! Taihaku is her bestie ❤️😜

That's such horrible things to do to Sogetsu!!! Split personalities?! Will the alter ego care about Rangetsu as much as Sogetsu does....? Oh no, Prince Tenyou is a hostage and Rangetsu is hurt!!! That cliffhanger should be illegal!

This escalated quicker than I expected, but this is probably my favorite volume so far. Rangetsu finally released her secret and found Sogetsu in the same volume.
I'm a sucker for that cliffhanger though.
