This was a really surprising book to read. It came to me in a bok of my grandfather's old woodworking books. Most of them were collections of plans or projects, a couple straight forward "how-to" manuals, and then this one. I cracked open "Adventures in Wood Finishing" and found that it is less of a set of instruction on how to finish wood and more a collection of amazing anecdotes from the career of a professional wood finisher. Yes, it certainly will tell you how to finish wood but it's an entertaining read in a novel-ish sense too.
This one is only going to appeal to a limited audience. If you love woodworking and finishing, and have a fondness for history and quaint stories of the good old days, you will probably enjoy this peek into wood finishing in Europe circa WWII.
It's a quick read. I picked it up on Amazon after reading an article in a woodworking mag where all the contributors listed what they considered their most essential books for their craft.
