This is Book Two of a series. Readers are strongly encouraged to read Book One, Last of the Chosen, before reading Knights of the Chosen. The Empire has collapsed. Aided by the Chessori, who wield an unbeatable mind weapon, Rebel domination of the sectors strengthens daily. Against such formidable opponents, hope dims among the Empire hierarchy. The people of Earth are immune to the terrible mind weapon, but the Chessori know exactly where Earth is located. To save itself, Earth must save the Empire, but the process of pulling the politically fractured nations of Earth together cannot be forced. It must be led, and time is short. Join your friends Ellie, Mike, Val, Reba, and Krys as they struggle to pull the remnants of a once great civilization from the ashes of defeat. Like the Phoenix, they will rise up, giving all that they are, and the galaxy will hear their call.
Knights of the Chosen picks up the story where its predecessor left up and carries on in the same speed, density and depth as Last of the Chosen did. It's a compelling read in the very same way, I could barely put it down. Finished it yesterday and can't wait for the next.
While this is -in a way- a typical "middle book", it doesn't suffer the usual errors/fatalities of middle books. The plot continues on, some issues are resolved (Orion III/Aldabaran I), new ones arise, promising an all-out showdown in the last installment.
The characters have settled into their roles and start handling them very well, mostly grown up now. And -most YAY- George is back (my fave "character").
The final book should have been out by the end of 2011, so I e-mailed Larry and he assured me, he's trying for spring 2012 (or maybe early summer); so all is well in Shipyard.
That being said, this time around I advise that somebody should have a serious, SERIOUS talk with the editor. At 37% (Kindle edition) a paragraph ends mid-sentence. Shortly thereafter, another is repeated, word for word. We get names mixed up (again!) and several other mistakes - all of which throws you off-track in your reading experience, hence only 4*.
Update (04.02.2012):
An ongoing discussion with amazon.com/CS has now revealed that the phenomenon of paragraphs stopping mid-sentence is indeed a *.doc/OtherFileFormat ->.mobi issue. While it completely eludes me, how in this day and age there can actually be a difficulty converting files, this is nonetheless the case. So, I retract my statement about that. I have also learned that in publishing this book, no professional editor was involved for reasons of speed, I also retract that statement. And on goes the 5th star.
Review The Spirit of the Empire book 2 Knights of the Chosen
This is listed as Syfy and the first book in this series is just that. However, this book is essentially a book on military strategy and the glorification of war. In this series the reader becomes familiar with various species of aliens and they're bent on destruction and enslavement of other species. So as far as being a science fiction, it's sorely lacking in science. War strategy isn't science fiction. It's not really even fiction. War has been around a very long time and though war weapons might improve I don't see that as science fiction.
I read this entire series and neglected to review most of the books here. That is a shame. The series is brilliant. I had given up on SF which had been my favorite genre for years. The first book in the series grabbed me and this one dug me in deeper. The author is extremely talented at defining his characters in depth and dimension. In addition his story telling is woven with a masterful hand. You won’t likely realize how much depth there is here because it feels so natural. So this review is less about the book and more about my experience reading it. This is truly a page turner.
LPW. Has penned the second novel of the Spirit of the Empire series which finds the Empire in a state of collapse due to the combined efforts of the Rebel factions and the Chessori. As the expansion continues it is discovered that Earth's humans are immune to the weaponized mind weapon. If Earth is to survive they must save the empire. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
I really like the various aliens included in this series. The first book at the beginning I was doubtful of the writing because the people’s names were repeated each time they spoke , no one talks like that! But I continued an have enjoyed the story very much and look forward to more by the author!
This book illuminates the lessons we teach our children!
First of all, this is a great science fiction story about possibilities and what ifs. What if you saw a spaceship and what if they needed your help. What if you risked everything to help someone and what if you were successful. Wow the results stagger your imagination. Read this book. You won't be sorry.
I’m trying to like this book series, but it’s not grabbing me. It’s good that there was less ‘fantasy’ in this Book #2, and there was certainly lots of fighting — but the overall story is still kinda childish in orientation.
Book 2 of the series continued a well-thought-out plot. At this point I will purchase the remaining three books and recommend to others that they at least try the series
I enjoyed the first book in the series, and really wanted to like Knights of the Chosen. Although Last of the Chosen was fantasy in Space instead of sci-fi, it was still an enjoyable read. Knights of the Chosen is not.
The story is bogged down in unending space battles, countless knighting of various characters, and explanations of how incredible Terrans are. Ground battles are handled better than their space counterparts, but still drag on for too long. There is little differentiation between characters, and even heroes from the first novel all speak with the same voice. The story seems to have spun out of control and the reader is left with a rambling tale in which little happens despite its incredible length.
I really enjoyed the first novel, but Knights of the Chosen has little going for it. It is not worth reading, let alone buying.
It's a little sappier than Last of the Chosen, but that can be forgiven, afterall we're dealing with queens and knights and....well you get the picture....the writing becomes more knights of the round table heroic, the characters set high standards for themselves so the language suits them, though to me it's a bit altruistic for my tastes. Still, I loved the book and anxiously look forward to the next in the series!
Very enjoyable book. The heroes are heroes, bad guys are bad guys and some excellent space battles. Too many books get bogged down in politics, emotions or "character building" (David Weber's latest ones comes to mind).
I've just started to read the next book in the series and I hope it's more of the same, especially the fleet actions.
It's too bad that as much as I enjoyed the first book, this one was a disappointment. The endless detailed battles ruined it for me. Also, the elevation of the Terrans to a point where it seemed as though they were smarter than those from advanced societies didn't make any sense. At times the character dialogue seemed misplaced as well.
My husband found these books and recommended them to me. I really enjoyed reading them, they have a little of everything, action-adventure-romance-suspense all the while in space! Give them a chance and you'll be hooked like I am. Can't wait for book 4 to come out and I'm not even finished with book 3, I don't want it to end!
I am new to this author but he has captured my imagination. I swore I would not start another series but after the first book i could not put it down. Well written and involves you
Enjoyable, fun read. Not quite as good as the first book, but still well worth the time. I'm very much looking forward the the third book, due out in March.
