Toni Teitelbaum is a former US Marine MP, a curvy six-footer with a fondness for designer clothing and handguns. She is also a wise-cracking high school history teacher, supervising a class visit to Washington. When a student bolts off the path near the Lincoln Memorial, Toni chases him into the foliage, where she finds more than her wayward student. A man has been shot, left for dead in the bushes. He appears homeless and drunk, jabbers craziness and dies in her arms. The police say it is typical street violence. Toni knows better.
Crime scene details don’t add up and when she begins receiving threats, Toni knows someone wants her to shut up. The teacher she has become wants to skedaddle back to the safety of her Marin classroom. The cop she used to be won’t let her. Before he died, the man in her arms hid a 4 gig flash drive in her jacket. Once Toni discovers what’s on it, there’s no turning back.
Fortunately Toni isn’t in this alone. Her father’s brother, Lester, is a gay introvert who works as a civilian number-cruncher at the Pentagon. Her mother’s brother, Gino, claims to run a cleaning business, though the family suspects the only thing Gino launders is money. Unfortunately for Toni, her uncles aren’t exactly The A Team.
Toni Teitelbaum’s got 4 gigs of explosive truth in her Anne Klein jacket. And though it’s been said that the truth will make you free, in Toni’s case, it just may make her dead.
I live a few hours from DC, and when my father moved there twenty years ago we used to spend weekends doing the Tacky Tourist thing. I cannot for the life of me imagine if I had run off (as was my habit) and stumbled across an almost dead person lying near one of the memorials. This is how the book opens--with a California student visiting with his class, and the teacher running after. Little does Toni Teitelbaum realize the way her life shall change just from chasing her rebellious student. The man she found places a 4gig jump drive in her pocket with his final act, and the fun begins. What follows is Toni's attempt to draw on her former Marine skills to remain calm as she is threatened, her family is threatened, and even her students are threatened while those that can be implicated by the files on the drive try to find and destroy it.
The book is very fast paced and an easy read. I was surprised by how the facts seemed to flow together--frequently I am disappointed by books I receive to review because there are too many inconsistencies and plot devices used in ways that make no sense and vital points that are skipped in the interest of space. Author Stella Baker did a great job of making sure the reader stays engaged but not disappointed as the story unfolds, and it keeps the reader guessing about the bad guys to the very end. Highly recommended!
A good quick read. Kept my interest right from the beginning. A nice blend of Jewish and Italian family helping out, as well as a teacher/marine heroine.
The heroine, Toni Teitelbaum, is chaperoning a class visit to DC, when a student wanders away. Toni goes after him and finds a dying man, who slips a 4 Gig thumb drive to her, and a cryptic verbal message. The crime scene details don't seem to add up for Toni, and she takes it upon herself to go through the files on the drive. Toni is threatened, and decides to follow up herself. The rest I will let you find out for yourself.
Anyone who likes action/adventure/thrillers should read this!
I found this book very well writen. When I first started reading it my first thought was... Well that was a stupid move!
Then as I read farther I realised that was part of the way it was written.. The person would eventually realise they goofed, lololol, I then realised that in real life that is exactly what we would do!
I do like the plot, talk about stepping into a mess!
Great book, interesting, comical at times, emotional and enjoyable.
This was a fun read. Our heroine is a former Marine, now a schoolteacher, who stumbles on a dying man while taking a group of school kids on a tour of the Capitol. Before he dies, the man slips a thumb drive into her pocket, beginning a scary and mysterious search for the story of why the man was killed. A good light read.
Super fun book with lots of intrigue. Tobi was a great heroine and her uncles were both a kick. The story flowed well with realistic happenings. I will be checking out anything else Stella Baker writes!
I got this book for free on Amazon for my kindle. I was so pleasantly surprised by this good story! It kept me interested and wasn't so far "out there" as to be unbelievable. Glad I got to read this one!
After skimming a couple of reviews, I had expected not to like this very much, but, in fact, I was pleasantly surprised. This is a very solid book. The plot is interesting and engaging, the characters are likable and sympathetic, and there's a good sense of humor. Nothing life changing, but it's not meant to be. I highly recommend it.
A six-foot tall ex-marine turned school teacher finds a dying man on the D.C. Mall and conflict follows. That ex-marine-turned-teacher is a woman, and while that conflict sometimes gets emotional, the action that follows any bout of soul searching leaves no doubt who is in charge.
Antonella Teitelbaum decides to have what she sees as a bit of fun one week-end. She agrees to take her young students on a trip to the country’s capital, Washington D.C. While there, a dying man’s cryptic message ensnares her in a dangerous string of events, making her fully aware that any action she takes could get her killed.
As ominous as all this sounds, author Stella Baker manages to lace plenty of easy humor into her suspenseful thriller, not the slapstick kind but short retorts or comments you wish had formed on the tip of your tongue at one time or other. I found myself chuckling at unexpected phrases, and smiling often.
The contents of the 4-gig flash drive could bring down a major corporation, but if the information doesn’t reach the right hands, too many innocent people will suffer. With little hesitation, the teacher and the ex-marine in Antonella (Toni the Tiger) Teitelbaum join forces to find a solution. Her major backup, two loving uncles, bring their own brand of humor and conviction to the situation.
Often the villain in a story is more exciting than the hero. J.A. Konrath actually compiled a book featuring a string of villains from many of his novels. In 4 Gigs of Trouble, this is not the case though. Keeping up with Toni is a challenging task as she travels from D.C. to Vegas and back, picking up clues, dropping tails, and dodging her mother’s cleverly named crap-o-meter at every turn.
Ex Army MP and now a teacher is in DC with a class of 6th graders when while chasing one boy who took a run for some bushes off the route to the Lincoln Memorial, discovers a body. The man is not quite dead and she calls for her fellow teacher to call 911 while she tries to make him comfortable. He whispers a few words to her before giving up the ghost. Later at their hotel she discovers the door to their bus as open even though the driver is sure he locked it and the finds the their room altough locked was searched. Later she discovers a 4gig flash drive in the pocket of the jacket with which she had covered the dying man. Now it becomes race to discover what was on the fladh drive and stay ahead of the people who were trying to recover it and contain the information it held. Another good free Kindle read.
If you like suspense and twists, read “4 Gigs of Trouble.” Former Marine MP turned high school history teacher Toni Teitelbaum is drawn into a murder mystery when one of her students stumbles across a dying man during a school sponsored trip to Washington, DC . The dying man slips a thumb drive into the jacket Toni covered him with while waiting for medical assistance. The dying man was a reporter and the information he gave Toni told the story of a pharmaceutical company rushing an unsafe drug to market just as the company was going public. Toni could not trust the police; she gave the evidence to a congressmen who seemed to ignore it. Her life was threaten, her parents were threatened and a woman who had helped Justin, the dying man, died in a suspicious auto accident on her way to meet Toni.
An ex-Marine, currently a teacher was having a field trip with her students in Washington D.C. While, one of Toni's student Robert stumbled upon a dead body or nearly so by the bushes. Toni didn't realized that she would be chased by some powerful people who works from the government.
Due to her knowledge, and upon obtaining a four gigs, black and red flash drive that contained some important evidence that will implicate the AsterAid Laboratories whom fast-tracking a drug they know to be dangerous.
The novel was okay, but it has more on conversation until even at the end with less action. Lack of excitement, unlike some other novel it builds up, and put you on the edge.
Toni, a history teacher, starts her trip chaperoning 9th graders to Washington, DC, by stumbling upon a dying man in the bushes. Soon after, she discovers that the coat she placed over him to provide comfort has a 4 gig thumb drive in its pocket. She boots up her computer, looks at the contents, and starts a dangerous cat and mouse game with the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry. Although there is a lot of cliche in this book, the characterization of a teacher with a healthy sense of humor as sleuth is engaging, and the book is fun. This is a light summer read.
This was pretty good, though not great. I enjoyed it, it was a fun read, and a quick read. The plot developed pretty well. But was kinda anticlimactic. there were a few paarts that contained minor surprises, and some mild twists. i enjoyed the narrator's commentary and the conflict between her prior military service vs her current school teacher mentalities.
it was fun, quick, and i enjoyed it, i just feel like parts of it could have been developed more.
Interesting read and not entirely what I expected but that was a good thing. Toni is a great female character and I adore her uncles. The only thing that bothered me was her constant reference to "her inner Marine" and then still being a little whingy and teacher-y. But, overall, I like the book and will look for others by Ms. Baker.

Toni eventually finds a 4 gig thumb drive that the dying man had put into her pocket while they were waiting for medical assistance - and then the fun began!
I chose that s rating because I became part of the story, and it held me in suspence until practically the very end. I had no idea who the bad guys were.
Also, one of the main characters, Uncle Lester, absolutely warmed my heart as did Uncle Gino. Thank you for writing such a book!
I picked this up free from the Pixel of Ink mailing list.
This is a fast paced action story, which is also an easy read. The main character's bipolar thoughts and the gay relationship killed it for me. The book is not bad, if you can get past those two things.
Fast easy read. Ex-Marine, Toni, takes her class to Washington only to have one of her students find a dead body. I really enjoyed her Uncles, they were a hoot! (This was one of the free books I snagged for my Kindle app.)
Struggled between three and four stars--it has a lot going for it, it's light without losing focus, but a few things were just a little beyond belief (well, you always have to suspend belief, but a little too much at times).
A very good book. I have been away from reading for awhile and this was a light book to get back into the groove. A little slow in the beginning but the pace picked up rapidly midway and very exciting in the final chapters.
This action packed book was fast paced, with a surprise around each corner. Suspense and action were well played out and believable. The author Stella Baker did a nice job. The reason I give only 3 stars is because of the profanity, had that not been there this could have been a 5 star book.
