This omnibus collects the first four volumes (chapters 1-17). of the manga Highschool of the Dead, with completely colored art. I'll talk a bit about the contents but will be focusing just as much on the format in this review. For detailed thoughts on each volume please see my individual reviews.

Highschool of the Dead is contains a lot of things I don't normally care for in my reading habits. Gore, zombies, and absurd levels of ecchi fanservice are not usually my cup of tea. It all comes together surprisingly well in this case, and HotD is extremely good for what it is.

During a normal day at school a man acting strangely shuffles up to the front gate and takes a bite out of the hand extended to push him away. Things quickly spiral from there and horrors reserved for movies and make believe descend on the world and our protagonists go from listening to lectures to scrambling to survive. Over the course of the four full volumes here a core group of students will band together to try to survive in the terrible new world they find themselves in. The premise isn't original, but there are layers to the story in the form of internal and external disputes and moral questions that make things quite compelling. In addition the action and suspense elements are done very well.

The general style can be jarring, and could be a deal breaker for a lot of readers. There is a heavy dose of fanservice over everything, both of the expected violence type and the more out of place ecchi elements. I don't object to fanservice generally, but it is RIDICULOUS in it's implementation here and creates a weird dichotomy of harem comedy style scenes interspersed with a gripping life or death struggle. Volume 2 is particularly notable for this as the life and death zombie series essentially switches to a harem comedy for a chapter. Complete with a four page sequence of the girls bathing together and comparing their breast sizes. And a character that goes a couple of chapters, including fighting zombies, wearing only an apron. Etc. Of course the book cover should give anyone considering the series more than enough of an indication as to the general approach.

It shouldn't work and I understand if it ruins the series for others, but it somewhat strangely didn't do so for me. The author's so good at reestablishing the mood and tension that I was never hung up on the previous page's absurdity.

So with warnings of what's being depicted out of the way, let's discuss the art itself. It's excellent. From character designs to easy to follow action to attention to detail, everything is quite gorgeous. Things are exaggerated often, including facial expressions, gore, and women's figures, but it's all part of the over the top style and previously mentioned "approach" of the comic. This edition has fully colored art, and the coloring is incredible. It's vibrant and really enhances the visuals.

The production values for this edition are off the charts. The paper size is that of an "American graphic novel" rather than the smaller standard for manga and the paper and printing quality is top notch. In addition to the four volumes of story, there are several pages of character art, pin ups, and other promotional materials sprinkled throughout. A sturdy hardcover with artwork and a dustjacket with art on both sides holds this 700+ page collection together.

Highschool of the Dead is the very definition of "not for everyone," but it is a rather well done guilty pleasure sort of read and this omnibus is an incredible presentation of it. Fantastic job by Yen Press.

If the title's not a giveaway, this is a zombipocalypse. I burned out on the genre about the time Romero started making all those crappy sequels to the original Dead trilogy, but I'm still interested if someone does something interesting with it, such as Zombieland. HotD isn't the most original take on zombies -- to a large degree it's just Dawn in Japan -- but it's well done with characters who are interesting and intelligent (at least those who survive the initial onslaught). None of that World War Z crap where the military is run by people only slightly brighter than General Melchett and more interested in providing photo-ops than winning the war.

The story begins with a seemingly ordinary day at a Japanese high school (though the setting is jettisoned by the end of the first volume, giving lie to the title). Unbeknownst to the students and faculty, the zombipocalypse has already begun, and the undead are spreading around the world. The first inkling anyone has that anything's amiss is when a zombie wanders onto campus and kills a gym teacher. Unfortunately this school doesn't seem to have any sort of lockdown procedure, so once word spreads there's panic in the corridors as everyone scrambles to escape the building -- which makes them easy meat for the zombies. Within a matter of hours, the whole school is overrun.

Five students and the school nurse band together to escape the campus. The nominal hero is Takashi Komuro who borders on anti-hero territory, particularly in the way he's not totally upset when his best friend dies as this means his best friend's girl (Rei Miyamoto) is now single. They're accompanied by the school kendo champ, Saeko Busujima (whose first name is pronounced suspiciously like "psycho") and the aforementioned nurse, Shizuka Marikawa.

But the real stars are Saya Takagi and Kohta Hirano. Both are quite intelligent, but in opposite ways. Takagi is a preppy honor student who's great at thinking things through and coming up with a logical solution -- but she falls apart under pressure. Hirano, by contrast, is a tubby nerd who's a total spaz under normal circumstances, but is able to think clearly when there's adrenaline in his system. It helps that he's one of the rare Japanese gun nuts -- one who's actually taken a vacation in the US to learn hot to shoot. It helps even more that Ms. Marikawa has a friend on the police force who keeps an apartment near the school, and said apartment is loaded with guns.

I do have a couple issues with the book, both related to hangups of the two Satous which get into the book too much. Shouji Satou, the artist, really goes overboard on the fanservice at times, most notably in the chapter where the gang holes up in an apartment and the girls get drunk while bathing and begin comparing each others' breasts, but panty-shots crop up in even ordninary scenes. (Incidentally, the book contains character sheets giving details like height and weight on each character, including bust sizes for the women. Rei and Busujima are the smallest with mere DDs. I guess flat-chested girls taste better to zombies.) The story would be just as good without the fanservice, and I know, at least in the US, more people are turned off by the gratuitous T&A than will buy the book because of it.

The other Satou, writer Daisuke, is a bit of a rightwinger, and he makes his heroes share his views, to the point that at times the book sounds like something published by Baen. Take the scene where Hirano and Takashi see a news report about civil unrest of the government's treatment of zombies.

Hirano: Which means that group's a bunch of bone fide fanatics. Either that or they're sick in the head. Leftists, you know.

Takashi: Leftists tend to be fanatical and sick in the head.

A few pages alter Takashi mentions that his mother's a teacher and Hirano asks if she's one of those leftsists with the Japan Teachers' Union. (If you're unfamiliar with Japanese politics, the rightwing groups over there are as fractious as the Judean People's Liberation Front, and there are few things they all agree upon -- but one of them is that the Japan Teachers' Union is evil.)

Eventually our band of plucky heroes hook up with Takagi's father, who is an ultra-rightwing fanatic who's used his followers to cordon off a safe-zone within the city. His plans aren't fully in place yet, but he seems to have ideas along the lines of the neo-feudalists who show up at the end of The Day of the Triffids, only he's presented in a much more sympathetic light, unlike the liberals, who are universally portrayed as a bunch of idiotic cry-babies who want to talk with the zombies.

But the fanservice is easy to ignore outside that one bathing chapter, and I'm not a leftwinger, so while the political wankery is anvilicious, it doesn't get my goad up. At worse I'd give the story a half-point deduction for these issues.

As a final note, I should say something about this edition. I saw the anime a couple months ago when it came out on Netflix and enjoyed it quite a bit (the politics are completely missing, though the fanservice remains apart from a few scenes with full-on T&A). When I went to look up the manga, I noticed the full-color omnibus would be only slightly more expensive than getting the first four volumes individually. Those few extra bucks were certainly worth it as the art looks gorgeous in bright colors on high-quality glossy paper. The only drawback is that this is one big-ass book. The length isn't that bad; what's killer is that the cover is an inch wider and taller than a standard hardcover -- not quite coffee-table sized, but enough to add noticeable heft to the tome -- and the glossy paper is heavier than what's normally used for books.

If you know HotD then you know what to expect. Except it is in COLOR!

If you do not know High School of the dead, be warned. Yes, there is blood. Yes, there is material not intended for children. The story follows a group of HS students and what happens to them in just a couple of days after a 'zombie' outbreak. Though that word is only half mentioned since nobody wants to own up to it.

The book itself is extremely well produced and very sturdy. It is large, a good 26+ cm tall when your typical manga is around 19 cm. So the reproduction is very well done. It is probably less expensive to buy this than the 4 original manga now.

Verdict: If you want to read HotD for the first time or again, this full color volume is a solid way to do it. Just note the parental advisory warning on the cover is there for a reason.

Really liked the storyline. But what I just really really can’t stand about this so far is the portrayal of females and their bodies. It’s unnecessary and I just really don’t like that their is SO MUCH focus on their bodies rather than the literal ZOMBIES that want to eat them. Therefore I just don’t think I’m going to continue and finish the story even though I like the actual storyline. I also really liked Saeko Busujima she was my favourite character.

Zombie menyerang sekolah.. Pening!!

Absolutely beautiful! A full colored manga, guns, gals, and gore galore. A raunchy, bloody, gun fest of fun and games and fear. Completely and absolutely one of the best presentations of manga I’ve seen in years.

Oh. My. God. Such a good read! I adore the TV show and always wanted to get into the manga. I loved seeing the bonus stuff that was left out of the anime series and to see the author’s notes and thoughts whilst designing the series. I literally couldn’t put the manga down.

Great colors, good art, fun story. Very enjoyable, though sometimes skews a little risqué, but not as graphic as it could be. Lots of “fan service” aimed teen to adult. It is exactly what you expect from its title and summary.

***1/2 to ****
It's kind of like a Young Adult Novel, containing, contrary to the YA genre, but as 'required' by this particular manga genre, lots of mild nudity (and a lot more of gore).

I LOVE the colored version of this series. It really helps immerse you into the graphic and gory nature of the different panels and add a cohesion for me.

Great zombie themed series.

If you're looking for lots of T&A without much of a plot and the occasional zombie rampage, this is the story for you. This was a total was of time and money for me.

Was a pretty good zombie horror book. I would say that if they took out all of the fan service it probably would rival the Walking Dead book series.

Quando vi este livro à venda por metade do preço nem queria acreditar… Saiu-me o Jackpot!

Manga is one of those versions of print that you have to be ready for. Mainly the overt sexualization of every female character is going to show up. For whatever reason, they always have the same stats and there's always a strong traditional girl, a whiny girl, a kid, a ditzy one and the lead who is generally dainty yet powerful when needs to be, but always-always unclear on her intentions.

Anyhow, HOTD was a beautiful graphic from start to finish. The story jumps into the thick of a zombie uprising and the need to band together in order to progress to a "safe place" in order to survive. It was fun all the way through.

Covering the first four volumes of HOTD, this edition is massive and features bonus material throughout. The full-color illustrations add a lively touch to this dark zombie series. In spite of the name, I do not recommend this for younger readers, particularly due to the fanservice. It is definitely for mature readers, preferably those who are already familiar with the common tropes of zombie lore (or fans of the anime). This does go beyond what is covered in the anime series, so those wondering what could possibly happen in season two might get a clue here.

Zombie apocalypse plot, Japan manga style, Amazing art by Shouji Sato ( does sexy hentai and non-hentai artwork), FULL COLOR. what is not to like ?!? This Omnibus book is also reasonably priced, with a hidden dust cover jacket art.

This is truly the epitome of all English translated manga. If they continue to produce this sort of quality of books, I am gonna feel sorry for my wallet. Thank god there is Book 2 ! ENJOY !!!

Collects the first 17 acts of the Highschool of the Dead series in vibrant, beautifully remastered artwork. I will warn that this omnibus is graphic. While not the best manga I've read, the story is compelling and fast paced. The story focuses on how people respond to the outbreak from forming groups of religious zealots, to going it solo in the hopes of finding ones family.

Felt like the anime as I read it. My biggest problem was the fanservice in this manga. Butt otherwise. I enjoyed it. It's probably one of the most realistic zombie animes I've found. Great cast of characters. I highly recommend this if you're into anime/manga zombies (the Walking Dead) and fanservice. Then this is for you.

I'm still waiting on Season 2...
