This omnibus collects the first four volumes (chapters 1-17). of the manga Highschool of the Dead, with completely colored art. I'll talk a bit about the contents but will be focusing just as much on the format in this review. For detailed thoughts on each volume please see my individual reviews.
Highschool of the Dead is contains a lot of things I don't normally care for in my reading habits. Gore, zombies, and absurd levels of ecchi fanservice are not usually my cup of tea. It all comes together surprisingly well in this case, and HotD is extremely good for what it is.
During a normal day at school a man acting strangely shuffles up to the front gate and takes a bite out of the hand extended to push him away. Things quickly spiral from there and horrors reserved for movies and make believe descend on the world and our protagonists go from listening to lectures to scrambling to survive. Over the course of the four full volumes here a core group of students will band together to try to survive in the terrible new world they find themselves in. The premise isn't original, but there are layers to the story in the form of internal and external disputes and moral questions that make things quite compelling. In addition the action and suspense elements are done very well.
The general style can be jarring, and could be a deal breaker for a lot of readers. There is a heavy dose of fanservice over everything, both of the expected violence type and the more out of place ecchi elements. I don't object to fanservice generally, but it is RIDICULOUS in it's implementation here and creates a weird dichotomy of harem comedy style scenes interspersed with a gripping life or death struggle. Volume 2 is particularly notable for this as the life and death zombie series essentially switches to a harem comedy for a chapter. Complete with a four page sequence of the girls bathing together and comparing their breast sizes. And a character that goes a couple of chapters, including fighting zombies, wearing only an apron. Etc. Of course the book cover should give anyone considering the series more than enough of an indication as to the general approach.
It shouldn't work and I understand if it ruins the series for others, but it somewhat strangely didn't do so for me. The author's so good at reestablishing the mood and tension that I was never hung up on the previous page's absurdity.
So with warnings of what's being depicted out of the way, let's discuss the art itself. It's excellent. From character designs to easy to follow action to attention to detail, everything is quite gorgeous. Things are exaggerated often, including facial expressions, gore, and women's figures, but it's all part of the over the top style and previously mentioned "approach" of the comic. This edition has fully colored art, and the coloring is incredible. It's vibrant and really enhances the visuals.
The production values for this edition are off the charts. The paper size is that of an "American graphic novel" rather than the smaller standard for manga and the paper and printing quality is top notch. In addition to the four volumes of story, there are several pages of character art, pin ups, and other promotional materials sprinkled throughout. A sturdy hardcover with artwork and a dustjacket with art on both sides holds this 700+ page collection together.
Highschool of the Dead is the very definition of "not for everyone," but it is a rather well done guilty pleasure sort of read and this omnibus is an incredible presentation of it. Fantastic job by Yen Press.
