Gingerbread Mistletoe

Rate this book

The last thing Jeff wants is to spend time with the man who totaled his car—the one he spent years restoring with his late father. But if he wants to resurrect his childhood town’s annual outdoor hockey tournament, he’s got no choice.

The last thing Mika wants is to work with the guy who took off right after the accident, without ensuring he was okay. And working together on organizing Jeff’s proposed tournament sounds like a complete nightmare. He’s got enough on his plate after surviving cancer.

Sparks fly as they’re forced to work together, but is that enough for them to set their differences aside and pull off the tournament in only two weeks? Or will they prove to be immune to the magic of Christmas?

Don't shoot me for bah-humbug-ing all over this holiday romance, but I couldn't get into the Christmas spirit.

This is my second book by Amy Aislin, and it's my second one that I didn't really enjoy. I don't think she is the author for me, I'm afraid. It might just be me as all of my friends seem to enjoy Gingerbread Mistletoe, so take my review with a grain of salt.

I found Gingerbread Mistletoe to be incredibly boring. I fell asleep while reading it 4 nights in a row (!), and I had to push to get through it, even though it's under 200 pages long. I know it's supposed to be a sweet, low-angst contemporary romance, but it was so blah for me that I kept getting the characters mixed up (that's what sleeping while reading will do to you...), especially the secondary characters. It was all just so bland.

The book was sweet and had a lot of holiday spirit, so I think if you like the writing style of Amy Aislin, it might work for you. However, it was not the right fit for me, unfortunately. I'll have to get my Christmas romance fix elsewhere this year.

If you're looking for all the Christmas sparkles, this may be the book for you: bonfires, hot chocolate, inflatable lawn ornaments, Christmas market, and oodles of feel-goodness.

If you're looking for substance and steam, look elsewhere. There is one perfunctory sexy scene at the 75% mark that wasn't worth waiting for. I never felt the chemistry between the men.

Even though Jeff was blamed for being an asshole, I thought Mika blew off the fact that he, you know, rammed into Jeff's parked car. If he was so upset, he shouldn't have been driving.

The story works as a standalone, but there were numerous references to the first book in the series, which got kind of annoying.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when a character has a medical condition, but the author barely explores it. Side effects following chemo are very real, but no cancer patient when telling someone close to them about their diagnosis says, "I had cancer. It's gone now." At the very least, they'd say something like, "I was diagnosed with stage II non-Hodgkin lymphoma last year and have been in remission for six months."

We're never told what kind of cancer Mika had, and Jeff doesn't seem particularly interested. I know this is fiction, but come on, give us something.

And what the hell was with the random supernatural element thrown in at the end? Why go there at all?

I'm being ornery, but I didn't hate this story by any means. Some of the scenes, like Jeff bringing Mika apology cookies and wooing Mika with Christmas inflatables, were very cute. I also like Mika's friend group.

I probably wouldn't read anything else by this author though.

*** I received an eArc from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.***

This was a pleasant surprise for me. Both main characters have interesting and natural arcs that progress organically throughout the story. Both characters are going through a transitional period in their lives and do not make the best first impression of one another.

A year passes and eventually, both must work together on a community project. Both characters share an instant connection and the chemistry is readily felt throughout the story. I enjoyed the minimal angst that this story had. It was light, fluffy, and fun to read. There were some surprisingly emotional moments that carried a lot of weight I was not expecting.
Overall I enjoyed this story and recommend it to anyone looking for a light and fun small-town romance that is a nice Holiday treat.

This was just delightful, a real treat for the festive season with a romance which just naturally progressed through the normal hiccups without any overly dramatic intervention.

I liked book one in this series, but this one just shades it into top spot because while I adored Zach in Christmas Lane Holland was harder to warm up to. Here, instead, both Mika and Jeff were easy to like characters even if Jeff was a bit grumpy at the start.

This small town setting really suits these festive-y romances and Amy has a deft hand for them, intertwining snippets from her other series as loose background Easter Eggs, which I appreciate because they don't affect the main narrative but make me smile to see other characters mentioned that I've enjoyed reading about.

With this one, it's a bit of a frenemies to lovers type plot as the initial meeting between Mika and Jeff is somewhat fraught. But 12 months later, they're brought together under unusual circumstances and slowly build up a friendship which leads to attraction and love.

I liked everything about this one, including the more ghostly interventions which pushed it almost into the paranormal zone but reads closer to the whole magic of the festive season.

The same bunch of secondary characters are along for the ride too and I really love Lighthouse Bay as a setting and can't wait for more.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

There's always a second chance and later explanation for Mika after what he had done in the past to Holland Christmas Lane , and it's all make sense to me.
Enter Jeff who's still cannot let go of his past and together they're trying to deal with that.
I liked how much efforts Jeff did after he set his mind that he wanted Mike all for himself, speaking of a real efforts!
I always love stories with little town setting, reminds me of my own hometown, and one little town in UK where I dreamt to spend my retirement, Bibury.
This is a very low to none angst and an easy adorable read we needed in this time of 2020.
Sure it's not easy but stories like this helps a lot!
Cannot wait for the next book in the series!

Jeff left Lighthouse Bay when he was eighteen. The whole family moved away.
After his father died two and a half year ago, his mind travels back to his youth, he decides to travel back, after more than twenty year, to Lighthouse Bay to find... maybe a piece of his beloved father.
He and his dad worked together for years on an old-timer. A year ago he finished it himself and took a ride until some stupid guy totaled this car. Mad, disappointed but mostly angry, he drove away and left the apologizing man behind without a look. Ugh, he hated him.

Mika returned to Lighthouse Bay after he was diagnosed with cancer, he needed his family and friends desperately. Bumping into someone else’s car didn’t do good to his wrecked feelings. Now he’s clean again, even though still suffering from chemo’s aftermath. He’s in charge of the park’s Christmas activities. After the New Year, he’ll return to LA to act again.
Who knew Jeff would meet him again here in Lighthouse Bay. They start at the wrong feet.
But Jeff needs Mika to fulfill one of his dreams.
It took a bit of time to warm up to each other, the CEO and the actor, but when they did, there was so much warmth and kindness. What follows is a sweet sightseeing on the road of romance and memory lane, with pitstops along at the shops of Lighthouse Bay.

Warm, homey, emotional, and comfortable, are feelings that kept popping up while reading.
This author can write such kind stories. With men who preferred honesty, directness, and maturity above unnecessary drama.
We are welcomed into the community of Lighthouse Bay and their Christmas festive activities.
This author gave a beautiful mystical addition to their story, it gave my goosebumps and made me cry heavy emotional tears, so wonderfully done. This, plus the real story behind the gingerbread mistletoe, earned the fifth star!

This was even worse than the first in this series! I don't see how this is the same author as On the Ice??

This was just constant rehashing the events that happened between Mika and Holland, then all of a sudden Mika's now in love with the grumpy new guy.

Not a thing about this was believable at all!

I think the biggest thing that bugged me though was the 'ghost'. I can't stand when characters are talking to ghosts in a story that isn't set in a paranormal world - it's completely jarring, and in this instance it was just so weird, like it was trying to add a seriousness or emotional aspect that just didn't come, because we know nothing about the characters except that they just decide on a whim that they love someone!

I only read this one because I am actually intrigued by Dev and Clark and want to read their book, but this just felt like a few hours of my life I won't get back, and I'm kinda sad about it because I really enjoyed Aislin's hockey series.

In Christmas Lane, Mika Jones was initially the bad guy who gave trouble to Holland and Zach's relationship (Mika was Holland's cheating ex, who came back to Lighthouse Bay, and kissed Holland when he returned) ... but then everyone gave him a second chance, and well, Mika finally had his own love story in this book. Plus a deeper understanding about what happened to him a year ago.

I enjoyed this one and that Mika and Jeff took time to let the love bloom. I loved that it involved a lot of the Christmas situation of Lighthouse Bay, as the two of them prepared the hockey event. What can I say, I love Christmas stories this time of year 😊

I was a bit thrown by the factor in the beginning though. Felt a bit too, uhm, supernatural? But then it added a different tone to the story, and it did make my eyes teary eyed when

What a wonderful Christmas tale !
Jeff and Mika, about 40, had no idea that their ties went back to childhood !
We begin with a fender bender in L.A., CA, and now we see the men meet again, and the hurt is raw again.
They struggle until they each does apologize.

TV Actor Mika has recently ended his chemo treatments he had taken near his hometown and friends in Lighthouse Bay.
Jeff, CEO of a sports company, with two grown kids, has come home alone, to feel his Dad's spirit. He misses him so much.

The Christmas festival is shaping up, and Jeff needs Mika to let him organize a charity hockey tournament.
Working together, their feelings grew and each man wanted the other. They fit, they are comfortable and happy together. In addition, their sexy times were intense and more than either had ever known.

Well written, marvelous characters, teary eyed moments, and a marvelous epilogue !
ENJOY !

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Gingerbread Mistletoe
is the second standalone in her holiday romance series, Lighthouse Bay.

Jeff is a workaholic who is use to spending his holidays alone. He usually spends December in sunny LA but this year chooses to return to his hometown of Lighthouse Bay in hopes of reconnecting with the spirit of his dad. He decides to resurrect the tradition of the towns holiday hockey tournament but in order to do that he needs to the help of Mika. Mika, who he had a not so pleasant encounter with the year before. They both have sour first impressions of each other, but they slowly move past that and get to actually know one another. But Mika is afraid of past relationship history repeating itself and will have to take the let down his walls if he and Jeff are to have a chance.

"he'd ply Mika with snickerdoodle cookies until Mika realized how good they'd be together."

Gingerbread Mistletoe
is a sweet, low angst, low drama holiday romance. Two likeable characters set in a Christmas obsessed winter wonderland. Lighthouse Bay is a town straight out of a hallmark movie with their holiday festivities. Christmas parades, holiday marketplace, concerts, town bonfires, and sleigh rides. With such a rocky first encounter, Mika and Jeff while working together take the time to really get to know another. Their slow-going relationship which involves a lot of charming courting from Jeff. Mika is reluctant in acknowledging his feelings towards Jeff. They end up with a relationship that's mellow, caring and compassionate.

All in all, Gingerbread Mistletoe was a charming holiday mm romance and I look forward to future books in Lighthouse Bay.

This is a sweet story that started to get me in the holiday spirit. I delighted in this story, these characters, and the sense of community that came together within the pages. Both Jeff and Mika are at turning points in their lives and I enjoyed following along on their journey. This book reminds me of all the Hallmark movies so if you enjoy those, you really like this.

This is the second book in Amy Aislin’s Lighthouse Bay series, but it’s been two years since the first came out. I’ll admit, I was hard pressed to remember the first book, and it definitely took some time for me to bring back the details. For the first few pages, I was frustrated that I couldn’t remember, especially because it felt like I should. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Mika to remind the reader of the history, and then it all came flooding back. This one can be read as a standalone, as it’s not necessary to have read the first one for this story to make sense. But it did have an extra weight to it, once I remembered who Mika was and how he appeared in the first book.

What I liked...

This book did a great job drawing you into the story within the first few pages. It is a romance story that I would call a slow-build-love some might say enemies-to-friends. Either way, it is a HEA story, but the fun of it comes from how they get to that happily ever after.

The main characters were well developed. I enjoyed that the story had two mature men that came with their own baggage & histories. Jeff is a father of two grown children, has been married, and apparently has dated both men and women in his past. Mika has relationship trust issues, not to mention personal baggage. This is not an insta-love story and the courtship was frankly very cute!

Also: KUDOS to the author, Amy Aislin, for incorporating a little bit about Ashton Yager, the first NHL hockey player to come out of the closet into the novel.

What I did not like...
NOTHING! I cannot think of one element of the book that I would change.

There is a SLIGHT paranormal element to the story that happens in the first chapter then again slightly at end of the novel as things do wrap up to an awesome HEA ending. But it played well as more of a coping mechanism vs. “paranormal experiences”. Frankly, it totally worked!

I will call out a possible trigger to some. One of the main characters did have cancer but is in remission. There are some side effects noted in the book, but I promise total happy ending. But I know this is a sensitive topic and the author does talk about that in the author’s notes at the end of the book. Personally, it was very well done.

The Bottom Line...
AWESOME read. It really drew me into the story, that despite being a full-length novel, I read it in just a couple of days. It is a feel-good book that brings in hope for the holidays. Personally, this is what I needed after a year like 2020.

Oh, and my favorite line in the book is below, and not just because I have 15 holiday-themed inflatables that seem to grow annually (thanks to my husband!).

"I don't think I've ever seen inflatable Christmas lawn ornaments used as a wooing mechanism before"

Disclosure: I did receive a copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own!

Yep, I still want to pack my bags and move to Lighthouse Bay. Once again the setting shined as brightly as the characters and the story. I love this little town, and the people in it, so much!

Gingerbread Mistletoe is a wonderful small town, holiday romance. It'll put you in the holiday spirit for sure- and couldn't we all use more of that this year?
It's such a heartwarming, sweet read, with some definite heart-tugging moments. Mika and Jeff are complete opposites in many ways, but so alike in others. Mika's been working in Hollywood while Jeff's been burning the candle at both ends at the company he started. When they both end up back in Lighthouse Bay, sparks fly-and not just the good kind, thanks to a previous encounter that neither have been able to get out of their mind.

I really enjoyed being along for the journey as these two worked their way through their differences and slowly fell in love. There was a little back and forth, some resistance on both ends, and a bit of a misunderstanding, but I liked that there wasn't really any drama, and the troubles weren't drawn out. I loved the way Jeff went about wooing Mika, it was the cutest and sweetest thing! And I liked how Mika was there for Jeff, when the grief of losing his father got to be a little overwhelming.

I must admit, when Mika made his first appearance in Christmas Lane, (which you do not have to read to enjoy Gingerbread Mistletoe, although it is a great introduction to the town and its characters- and I mean that in more ways than one!) I wasn't his biggest fan. In fact, I didn't like him much at all, for a whole 5 minutes. But once I got to know him, and his background, I couldn't wait to learn more about him. I'm so happy he got his happily ever after with Jeff, they were such a wonderful couple!

I'm not sure if Ms. Aislin has plans for more in this series, but there's for sure one couple I'd love to see more of!

This was a smile-while-reading, feel good, holiday hit for me! Mika and Jeff are sweet. Jeff doesn't hold back on making his intentions clear, in the most adorable way. And the story is centered around holidays in a small hometown, so there's lots of cute events and shops and I don't know, I just loved it. Add that touch of Christmas magic, which you can't really question.

I mean, these two had a misunderstanding at the start, but afterwards, it was mostly them slowly falling for each other while enjoying holiday festivities. Who wouldn't want to read something like that right now? Oh and the cover is adorable, and it made me want to read book one, about another couple who was mentioned in the story.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆☆
This is the second book in the series – the previous one I read back in 2018 when it was published, and I still remembered the fun of Zach and Holland and all the angst of Lighthouse Bay’s formal Christmas celebrations. I was, therefore, really happy to go back and join the team again. If you haven't read Christmas Lane, I would definitely recommend that you do – and you will meet Mika and understand a few things about him in advance of reading this lovely romance.

There are so many lovely things about this story that I think you will enjoy most of all if you read them fresh, so I am not going to say all that much about the story. However, I will happily tell you that Amy Aislin is really good at creating a town full of people that you want to know better, of quirky fun shops and their owners. The Christmas market and parade give her an excellent opportunity to give us a very rich world to step into and enjoy. I loved how the story flowed, and how we inevitably get what we want, but not in an easy way, and there are plenty of lessons learned along the way, as well as a touch of magic/fate/wishes coming true, which adds to the romance.

I loved catching up with all the friends from the first book and that Mika had a story which focussed on him and gave him what he desired more than anything. Perfect!

Sarah – ☆☆☆☆
This is a fun Christmas read. It’s almost sickeningly sweet, soppy, and more than a little twee, but it is full of Christmas schmaltz and cheer. Christmas is the only time of year I tend to enjoy unashamedly sentimental romance, and this year, as our second national lockdown makes November feel even colder and darker, I’ve started on the Christmas cheer a little bit early.

CEO Jeff and actor Mika both find themselves back in their New England hometown for Christmas. With Mika organising the town’s Christmas market and Jeff organising a charity hockey tournament, the enmity between them quickly thaws as they work together in the weeks before Christmas. Their story is set in a picturebook small town and the writer has included every possible Christmas detail. From inflatable Christmas yard decorations to Christmas baking, night skating, Christmas quiz nights and more, Mika and Jeff enjoy a magical courtship helped along by pretty Christmas lights and falling snow.

In a year where most Christmas gatherings and activities have been cancelled, Mika and Jeff’s perfect fantasy Christmas is a lovely distraction. This is an easy read. There are a few emotional moments but overall, the story feels light and cheerful. There is humour and fun between Mika and his friends and Jeff’s attempts to court Mika are very entertaining. There is a tiny bit of steam but this feels like a family-friendly romance.

Angie – ☆☆☆
This was a low angst book. So low I found myself being bored. I couldn't connect with the characters and I found myself skimming the book hoping it would get better. No such luck. I'm sure others will enjoy this, it just wasn't for me.

Miałam nadzieję, że dalej będzie lepiej. Nie było 🫤

Wszechogarniająca nuda, niedopowiedzenia, brak rozwinięć i kilka niedorzeczności - zwłaszcza jedna.

Perspective

A holiday romance guaranteed to make you smile and crave snickerdoodles and gingerbread men. I adore the way Jeff wooed Mika, so original and creative, and just like Mika I found him hard to resist. “You know, I thought I came here to find my dad. Turns out I found myself instead. And you.” So many beautiful emotions with Mika and Jeff. They may have gotten off on the wrong foot—or car—but they sure know how to bring on the holiday cheer, joy and feel-good moments. This wonderful, heartwarming story is full of it all and adds just a touch of holiday magic to the wonder that is Lighthouse Bay.

I enjoyed this Xmas novella with Jeff returning to his home town, bumping into an old hmm antagonist/ acquaintance who well annoys him at first but then connection happens and this story just works.

I like that both Jeff and Mika are similar age, its a nice change from my recent reads.

Though I was a little iffy about the start, this story gave me all the warm Christmas-y feels with a hefty dose of sweet romance.

Jeff and Mika's disastrous first meeting set the tone for this emotionally-charged story. I could feel every ounce of Jeff's grief over losing his dad, right down to his misplaced anger at Mika for wrecking one of his last physical memories of his dad. I barely got a glimpse of Mika in that prologue, but even I could tell that something was very wrong in his life. A year later and Jeff is still holding a grudge over the stranger who wronged him when, surprise surprise, it turns out Mika and Jeff are from the same hometown in Maine. Knowing how these kinds of romances go, it wasn't a surprise at all that Jeff and Mika were stuck working together on a big Christmas project. Meet-cute completed and continued force-proximity arranged, it was fun to watch Jeff and Mika slowly thaw their icy feelings for each other. Their relationship built slowly, over shared work meetups, friendly teasing, and adorable courting, and as I watched the two of them fall in love I felt like I was falling right alongside them. Despite his workaholic nature, Jeff was such a sweet romantic at heart. I've never seen someone profess their love with tacky inflatable yard decorations, but it was undeniably cute to see Jeff cover Mika's yard in Christmas cheer. While Jeff seemed like he was ready to let his heart guide him, Mika took longer to conquer his inner fears about getting hurt by a romantic relationship. I'll admit that the course of their romance was fairly predictable, with all the usual ups and downs of figuring out how to make a relationship last outside of a holiday fling, but it was no less heartwarming to see everything work out in the end. Those touching scenes when Jeff got to say goodbye to his dad had me full out crying happy tears, and that sweet epilogue wrapped everything up nicely with a bow.

Gingerbread Mistletoe is another wonderful festive read from Amy Aislin.
So, whilst the first meeting of Jeff and Mika was definitely not under the best of circumstances, when they are introduced to each other again a year later they manage to work together to bring a hockey tournament back to Lighthouse Bay at Christmas, just like from when Jeff lived there as a boy. And if they happen to grow closer, building up a smouldering connection and slow burn attraction then all the better. What makes is especially magical is the feeling of Jeff's father being there with him which is important to him since losing him the year before.
Mika is definitely wary after how his last relationship ended, especially with long distance being involved and that's a possibility if he were to start anything with Jeff with Jeff's business based in New York and Mika filming in California. However, Jeff is nothing if not determined when there is something that he wants and Mika comes under that title. It's really heartwarming to see how both men thaw out and take a chance with each other and the festive season. I totally love how Amy has written Mika's character and the after effects he's experiencing from an illness, something she talks about in the afterword. Both men are easily loveable, only wanting to do their best for Lighthouse Bay and their friends, which it's so great to be back with them after reading about them in Christmas Lane. There are really strong bonds of friendship, regardless of what has happened in the past and you can't help but get caught up in the festive spirit.
A highly recommended festive read from this wonderful author.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

⛄ Sigh...

“Sometimes things don’t look so bad from a different perspective,”

I don't even know where to start
Do you know the saying about six degrees of separation?
This was that with the sweetest (Jeff is such a romantic) holiday miracle twist
And Mika is one of those rare individuals that radiates happiness ( didn't start his life that way - but life's experiences changed that)

Great cast. Easy to follow with a complete storyline. Light angst. Family and friends.
This had it all.

Holiday Miracles? Yep
Small town feel? You know it
A little divine intervention? The best kind
Romance? The sweetest 🍬

This left me with a great big smile and all the feels
Definitely, a hot cocoa and fireside read -
Yeah it left me with the holiday spirit

This is a wonderfully festive read. It's emotional and compelling and the characters are so easy to become invested in. I really liked both Jeff and Mika, and my heart bled for both of them and what they'd been through. It's an interesting start for them as well, going from animosity to forced proximity, to something magical and genuine that progresses naturally. For all the past hurt, there is more healing and love, and pure joy, as these two hold on to each other for a heart warming HEA. And the small town setting and evocative descriptions really added to the warm Christmas feel as this beautiful romance unfolded. Perfect for an afternoon escape!

Gingerbread Mistletoe is a wonderful, feel-good holiday romance by Amy Aislin.

It has the makings of all the classic Hallmark movies. Small town. Isolated. Christmas town celebrations. Enemies to lovers.

Jeff and Mika meet on the worst day of Jeff's life. When they meet up a year later, Jeff is still mad at Mika, and everyone knows it.

Jeff's back in the small town where he grew up. As a workaholic, it's great that something magical cuts him off from the outside world while he's there.

One's dealing with his grief, the other with the aftermath of his cancer diagnosis. Both men have a lot of emotional baggage, making for some heartfelt hurt/comfort feels.

This is a story of two men who help one another heal; of two men falling in love without knowing it. There's a a small town festive feel throughout, especially during the magical event that Jeff planned.

Gingerbread Mistletoe's a sweet and tender Christmas romance. Amy Aislin beautifully combines a hurt/comfort theme with a memorable small town. And good god, the ending is cavity inducing.

Whenever I see Amy coming out with a new book, I know it’s a must read. I loved Christmas Lane and couldn’t wait for this book. Let me say Amy did not disappoint me at all.

First off, let’s start with that cover. These covers are so beautiful. They just put you in the holiday spirit and capture what is inside that cover.

Let’s talk, Jeff and Mika. Two men that have had unsuccessful relationships. One is a workaholic and the other ruined his last relationship. These guys are so sweet with each other even though their initial meeting didn’t go over too well. Lol. What a surprise when they see each again when Jeff returns to Lighthouse Bay.

I loved the lengths of what Jeff went through to woo Mika, let’s just say it was so creative and put a huge smile on my face.

This story is about finding your home in not only location but in a person, and friends. It’s about finding closure. I laughed, cried, smiled, I felt it all. So heartwarming.

I surly can’t wait for the third book in this series.

This was a very good story. I loved going back to Lighthouse Bay again and gettign to experience their Christmas wonders. Mika and Jeff didn't have the greatest meeting or even the second but once Jeff gets over himself a bit they find that the other isn't bad company. While they start spending more time together they begin to open up and I loved watching their relationship develope and flourish. Mika brings a reason to smile and not work to Jeff's life while Jeff brings love and home to Mika's.

I received a copy of this book and am giving an honest review
