At the age of 11, Cassie's drug-addicted mother left her on a street corner in LA, promising to come back in an hour. Cassie spends 3 years surviving on the streets until she meets Max, a stuntman for movies who takes her under his wing. He trains her to be a stuntwoman, but she decides that she'd going to be a police officer instead. Her training as a stuntwoman is what made Homeland Security interested in her. A mission goes sideways and she walks away from the HS agency and the only man she's ever loved. The book opens with her employed as a police officer in Kansas City, MO, being approached by the HS agency for an undercover mission that can only be done by her. Her contact/handler? Her ex, of course! Not a lot of spice, but the one scene we do get, she comes twice to his once, as it SHOULD BE. My only complaint is this: her lifelong mission of finding her mother and little brother isn't resolved, and we're left assuming that it never is. I know real-life doesn't always have tidy conclusions to things like this, but it's a ROMANCE. She needs a happily ever after for her solo life mission!
