Is a stranger who stalks your stalker a friend or your worst enemy?
Rachel Pendelton is determined to break from her small town past and stake out a new life for herself with a dream job in the big city. But hard work and determination are no match for whoever is working against her. When anonymous gifts show up, she’s flattered. When they appear in her locked apartment, she starts worrying. What can she do when everyone she turns to for help looks suspicious? What she doesn’t know is that a game has begun. A game with rules as baffling as they are deadly. A game that will pit her against the criminally insane. And only one can finish alive.
The author requested I read and review this book and I told her I was backed up and would get to it when I had a chance. I downloaded it onto the Kindle and thought as I was getting ready for bed just to have a quick peek at it. Well I didn’t put it down for some time, I kept waiting for a boring bit and finally I had to put it down and go to sleep. I picked it up the next day and read until my dental appointment and then finished it at home an hour or so later. I really enjoyed the suspense and the second guessing myself about what was really happening. Was it her…was it him…nono it was definitely him…no maybe not…
Stalkers and those stalking the stalker and then psychologists to boot, this book is very much a psycho thriller. Who did it and why? Why are some of us born without the ability to feel what others feel? What happens when we cannot get a song or person out of our thoughts? Think about it… do you cyber stalk anyone…or have you…or have you thought about doing it?
This is intense and fast paced. I read and thought and read and guessed and yet was surprised at who it was and why. The characters are endearing and spooky at the same time. Ambition is a good thing as long as it doesn’t lead to obsession. This is a good book that I would suggest it to any reader out there.
It's hard to come up with a new twist for a mystery, yet S.I. Pierce did so. The premise of a stalker who is stalking another stalker adds complexity and makes it harder to predict who the villain is and what that person's ultimate agenda is. I especially enjoyed the sections written from a psychiatrist's viewpoint, and the way her character was gradually and believeably developed. The writing flowed well and provided enough detail about character, scene, and backstory to engage me without slowing the pace. Occasionally Rachel, the main character, did things which I couldn't quite buy given the potential danger to her, but those choices didn't drive the plot, so while it distracted me a bit from the story, I still loved the book. Overall, Rachel was determined, resourceful, and likeable, and I wanted her to succeed in her new job and home and, of course, to be safe. The book kept me up nights, but only two, since I enjoyed it so much I raced through it. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of S.I. Pierce's novels.
The book opens in the office of psychologist Gloria Pike. As the story progresses, her sessions with Patient X add to the tension of this gripping suspense thriller.
Rachel Pendelton, has left home to pursue a new career. Her life takes a disturbing turn when unexpected, anonymous gifts start appearing within her locked apartment. It quickly becomes clear she is in the sights of a stalker.
As the mystery unfolds, it seems nearly everyone Rachel knows becomes a suspect. Revelations discovered by overzealous Gloria Pike and surprise appearances by the suspects elevate the suspense.
Patient X is following a stalker to try and play out their sinister game... who will end up getting hurt?
This story follows 3 perspectives; the psychologist, the patient and Rachel - who is being stalked by someone. My main problem with this book was that there was way too many red herrings, if I was Rachel I would have seriously considered moving or changing my taste in friends as every person she met had the potential to be the creepy person who leaves her presents and threatens her. I'm fine with having a few wrong leads but when the narrative is leaving it open to be every single character, it starts to get a little too unbelievable and wearing. Having said that, of the two revelations at the end, one was completely predictable from page one but the other one was a nice surprise which redeemed the story in my eyes a little. It also switches perspectives nicely and flows well - I read it in two sittings so it definitely kept me hooked and wanting to find out the ending.
Excerpt: Ambitious psychologist Dr. Gloria Pike thinks her new patient is the one she has been waiting for. The one that will bring her fame and fortune with her groundbreaking new therapy. Rachel Pendelton is on the verge of living her dream. She's finally overcome the final hurdle to graduating and is waiting to hear about her dream job. But all of that is threatened when someone starts stalking her. Patient X is disturbed. That much is clear. But who is playing who and who is really stalking Rachel? Psychotic patients, stalkers, and an innocent college student are the tangled players in The Devil's Game.
I have to say, it took me a couple of chapters to really catch my bearings in The Devil’s Game. While the first chapter definitely pulled me in, I wasn’t really sure what was happening or why. Thankfully, it didn’t last too long, and once it was over, I found myself on one hell of a ride!
The Devil’s Game is thoroughly twisted and insane. You have crazy Patient X whom seems to have some serious mental issues. Unfortunately, her psychologist isn’t much saner than her patients. Then there are the supplemental crazy side characters, so I wasn’t ever really quite sure who poor innocent Rachel’s stalker is. It definitely made for a lot of suspense and late night reading. =)
What I think I loved most about the book is that it lacked filler. This is a common problem in a lot of books today, IMO. With the Devil’s Game, I didn’t find myself constantly wondering why in the world the authors mentioned the type of shoes someone was wearing, and I didn’t have to go on any long side story plots that seemed to hold little to no relevance to the real story. Quite simply, The Devil’s Game contains straightforward, to the point writing.
I did feel like there were a few things missing from the story though. Some things I would have liked to have understood better or seen explained more:
1. Dr. Pike’s daddy issues. I felt like I kind of went from happy, serene, daddy pleasing Gloria Pike to drag daddy through the mud Gloria Pike. Very confusing
2. Maybe a more clarified beginning. I really did struggle with the first few chapters.
That’s really it. Not a lot to offer in the room of improvement. I stayed engaged, I enjoyed the story and I constantly second guessed myself when I thought I might know who the real players were. So, a well-deserved four stars for The Devil’s Game. I’ve also already downloaded another book by the same authors, Secrets, and am looking forward to reading it as well.
THE DEVIL’S GAME By S.L. Pierce & Maren Kaye Psychological Thriller Ebook provided by the author as a contest prize Review by Willa Kaye Danes, author at Penumbra Publishing
This story about a girl and her stalker – and her stalker’s stalker intent on ending things badly – was highly suspenseful and kept me guessing to the end regarding the real culprit. A well written psychological thriller with great characterization and pacing, The Devil’s Game switches scenes from an ambition-driven psychiatrist and her patient (Patient X), obsessed with following stalkers, to the rather hapless but likeable victim, Rachel, alone in the big city, and not sure who she can trust to turn to for help when mysterious gifts begin appearing inside her apartment. Later, the gifts are accompanied by threatening messages, but poor Rachel is at a loss to figure out how the culprit is gaining access to her apartment. There are plenty of suspects to choose from, and some deliberate misdirection that makes it continually impossible to figure out who the real stalker is. It is intense reading, and the characters are all very believable and well drawn. The dialog is crisp and realistic, and I found myself instantly drawn into Rachel’s world of worry and woe.
On a technical side, there were a few instances of point-of-view mixing I felt should not have been there, but they were unobtrusive enough not to mar the reading of the story. Another issue is that the authors give us snippets of almost everyone’s point of view, but conveniently leave out clues I felt should have been dealt with a little more fairly in the story. That is the main reason it was so hard to figure out who the stalker and the stalker-stalker were, because things were kept from the reader in such a way that it didn’t seem quite logical, given that we are seeing everyone’s thoughts. Overlooking this, one can still become quickly absorbed in the story and empathize with Rachel throughout the whole ordeal. The ending wraps up nicely, and overall the story is very entertaining and riveting.
I would rate it 5/5 but for the bit about the holding back of clues when in the POV of the ‘guilty parties.’ With that, it earns a 4.5. out of 5.0. Well done, and recommended. (Listed it as 5 here because there are no halvsies.)
A stalker who stalks other stalkers...thrilling..., September 4, 2012
The Devil's Game
S.L. Pierce is an author with the ability to drag readers kicking and screaming into her psychologically twisted worlds, and once we're there she refuses to let go.
In "The Devil's Game," Doctor Gloria Pike is deeply vested in a patient with an unusual psychopathology: a stalker who stalks other stalkers. The case might have been vaguely interesting to another psychologist, but Gloria sees this as her chance to prove her medical prowess to the world, while simultaneously driving a stake of accomplishment through the heart of her narcissistic father, a bestselling author and renowned psychologist who continues to ignore and overshadow her every accomplishment.
Rachel Pendleton is an attractive, young college student nearing graduation. Though stuck in a menial job at Mad Media Animation, she is seeking to break into one of the major animation production companies. Unfortunately, her personal life becomes a complication along the way. Currently between boyfriends, she finds herself attracting the interests of various men, including a coffee barista, a tutor and even the attractive, older maintenance man from her apartment building. Unfortunately, each of them has quirks that make it impossible to know who is leaving flowers, lacy underwear and even a knife INSIDE her locked apartment. Discomfort soon blooms into full-fledged terror as she realizes she is powerless to stop whoever is doing this.
And so S.L. Pierce has caught us in her web. As Doctor Pike and Rachel's sagas wind ever-tighter, we're propped upright in our beds, forced to keep reading as answers pour from the page.
Don't let "The Devil's Game" pass you by. This high voltage thriller is well-worth your time.
"The Devil's Game" is like a bag of Fritos -- salty, addictive, & fun. Like I do with my gastronomic guilty pleasure, I zipped through this book & then lay back on the couch exhausted & bummed that it was over.
Mystery/thrillers are tricky. They have to keep you guessing while giving you enough clues to stay in the game. We need to know more than the characters so that we can scream out warnings to them. The bad guys need to be scary bad and the good guys -- well, they don't need to be angels or anything. A little naivete is a good quality for a protagonist who finds herself surrounded by nerdy, gnarly, and overly-friendly people. She does need to be a bit too concerned about what other folks think about her so that she makes foolish decisions like not going to the police as soon as she suspects she's being stalked.
"The Devil's Game" delivers all of those qualities. It's cleverly plotted and the characters are complex enough to keep us guessing. It's the perfect size to read from beginning to end on an airplane ride from Vegas to Pittsburgh. Come to think of it, reading it while surrounded by strangers crammed into a long shiny tube might not be such a good idea after all. Egads!
NOTE: While it is about stalking & murder, this novel is not so overwhelming that young adults wouldn't enjoy.

I love a good thriller and don't normally write reviews, but with all the four stars I felt compelled to give my opinion.
Unfortunately The Devil's Game fell flat for me. I figured out who patient X was shortly after the character was introduced and who the stalker was not long after. I never felt a real connection to the protagonist Rachel and wanted to learn more about patient X, but never really did. Pierce never divulge's enough about the characters to truly make one care if they live or die.
I also take issue with how the author goes about the patient themselves telling us what is wrong with them. A person who is "ill" with the following issues doesn't know it and certainly wouldn't acknowledge it the way patient X does in the end. They don't see themselves as having anything wrong. They think they are completely normal when in reality they are seriously over the edge.
The ending was far from shocking to me either. I could see the destruction and mental deterioration half way through the book. The character ended up exactly where it belonged.
If you're looking for a quick pool side read then this one is perfect. I prefer my books to have a little more substance even pycho thriller's.
Psychotic patients, stalkers, and innocent college students are the major players in "The Devil's Game."
Two perspectives combined create this story from beginning to the intertwined end. From one side, an ambitious psychologist, Dr. Pike, tries to learn the inner-workings of the mind of Patient X and how he or she will react if pushed right to the edge. On the other, the victim of all the suspenseful happenings, Rachel, is trying to determine who amongst those around her is stalking her and how they are getting away with it. Come follow their story as both sides come together to create a very unpredictable ending. Can you figure out the mystery?
This was a very fast-paced and suspense-filled drama. From the very beginning, you have to keep turning those pages to see what is going to happen next. These authors definitely know how to keep the mystery going. They keep you bouncing from character to character when you are trying to figure out who is being the most suspicious.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys suspense-filled dramas with a psychological twist.
This book was kindly provided to me by it's wonderful authors for my honest review.
Warning: Before starting this book...go ahead and sit at the edge of your seat because that's where you'll end up. This is one PSYCHOlogical thriller that will keep you checking your doors and windows to make sure they're locked. All the characters are likable, even though you feel like slapping them a couple of times. The ending is unpredictable, the suspense and the goosebumps are real. Sit back and enjoy the ride, there's nothing you can do, but sit at the edge of your seat and hope it all turns out for the best.
S.L. Pierce is on my highly recommended author list, now I can add yet another one with this dynamic duo. Welcome to the list, Maren Kaye The Devil's Game
This gripping tale of a very disturbed stalker kept me entertained from start to finish; once I'd started, I could hardly put the book down. The characters were expertly drawn, from the somewhat vapid but highly likeable victim, Rachel, to the over-ambitious psychotherapist, Gloria Pike. I cared about Rachel and found myself saying things like, "No, Rachel, you don't want to go back in there!"
There were enough surprises and twists to keep me guessing all the way to the end. Because of the title I kept wondering if elements of the supernatural would make their entrance, which they did not. This did not bother me; readers should simply be aware that the book is high psycho-drama, not horror.
I downloaded the authors' free eBook Love Thy Neighbor and an excerpt of this book was included. Well, I didn't intend to want to buy this book because it isn't what I normally read. However, I was vested and wanted to know what happened next. It really is a good read and I am glad I ventured out of my comfort zone. It had just the right amount of scare factor. Just enough that you could still fall asleep. An interesting concept and psychological thriller of a stalker stalking a stalker. The characters seemed real and well thought out. Recommend this read.
I read a lot and I'm usually pretty good at figuring out the 'Who done its?' Well, I'm happy to say--Not this time! I was guessing, re-guessing, and second guessing my theories all the way through to the very end. I love when that happens! False clues, red herrings, duplicitous characters, oh my... I'm not going to rehash the plot. Just know that If you like psychological thriller mysteries, you'll enjoy the heck out of this one. I was given a free copy of this book for my review, but would have been happy to pay for it. I will be looking for more by this author.
This is an edgy fast paced "who done it" that keeps you guessing till the end... Just when you think you know who it is... it isn't... or is it??!!?? A very unique tale of stalkers, murder, and psychiatrist written from two perspectives, a psychiatrist and the victim. With twist and turns, this books keeps the pages turning! I recommend this book to others who love to read intense, gripping suspense thrillers.
A psycho-thriller with a twist… the twist in this book is a stalker who is stalking a stalker. Intense and fast paced it was a very quick read, just too long to be a short story, and just too short to be really that captivating, figured out to soon who the real predator and Patient X was. I read the book in a day. A great find for a free download on Kindle. An enjoyable read that I would suggest it to any reader out there
Rachel has a stalker. As a student in a strange city, she has many acquaintances all of whom could be the stalker.
The story starts off really well with interesting characters. However, towards the middle, it starts to drift and lose points.By the end, it's turning into some silly, unbelievable superhero thing that just makes the story lose all credibility.
The Devil's Game was a fast paced "Who Dunnit" book that kept me guessing up until the end. Though there were a few indiscrepencies I noted throughout the book I was pleasantly surprised by the climatic ending. A good read!
I have whiplash from all the twists and turns in this book! Had to tell my husband to stop talking to me because I could not stop reading. I was not expecting the ending of this book AT ALL. Enjoyed every minute!
Excellent thriller, so intense and mysterious. There are shocks galore in this superbly written story. Never a dull moment is a massive understatement, it is gripping through out. It was a pleasure to read.
This book had me from the beginning. I could not read it fast enough. It is full of surprises. Just when I thought I had it all figured out it takes another turn.
Interesting book, someone stalking someone stalking. Lots of twists. I figured parts out early but missed the big one and really missed the motive. This is a 4.5 star book.
The Devil's Game was an impressive book that kept me turning the page in anticipation of what would happen next. I enjoyed reading it and highly recommend that you read this book.
Wow, I read this in less than a day!!! I just couldn't put it down. It kept me guessing until the very end and there wasn't a single slow or boring part in the book. I absolutely loved it.
