Dolly Russell was a star of the big screen at a time when women were beautiful and men were strong. Scarlet White is a make-up artist at a time when women are desperate to be beautiful and men are pretty rubbish. This is a novel about growing older, taking risks and living for the moment.
Loved the feeling I got when reading this, the nostalgic vibe this book evoked was reminiscent of a time about 15 years back when life seemed simpler without smartphones, and people would still buy newspapers.
The story is dramatic, girly and felt very authentic. I enjoyed the depth of emotion portrayed and how intricately the narrative delved into Scarlet's inner thoughts and feelings
I loved it. Very well written, very honest, full of opportunities to reflect. "Sometimes love isn't pretty", well, that was exactly it. I recognized myself a lot in Scarlet. It's so easy for a woman to be weak when it comes to love. And as Dolly says, we need to toughen up. I only have one small reproach, regarding the length of the book. For me, it was a little too long, and I found some scenes kind of boring. Oh, and Tristan ! My, God, Tristan ! I absolutely loved that little short non-libidinist-bloody-genius ! I recommend this book very strongly.
