Thou shalt not kill. A contradictory message written in blood at the scene of a young woman's murder. Within days, another body surfaces, and to Detective Ramon Faust and Criminalist Kelly Garret, it's clear a deadly game is underfoot. Delving deep into the most terrifying case of Kelly's career, threatening phone calls and flashblacks challenge her sanity and the lives of everyone she loves.
Angel lives with her two amazing, half-gremlin children in a small Canadian town far from the borders of Middle Earth. She is deadly with a throwing ax, has an arsenal of dwarven jokes, and a legion of signed books she obsessively hoards with Gollum-like tenacity. She loves escaping to different fantasy worlds and finding new fantasy gems from the wonderfully amazing readers of the Indie Fantasy Addicts Facebook group. There she drinks with assassins, mages, and dwarves in shady taverns and revels in their crazy, amazing journeys to far off lands. She lives for adventure, whether it’s losing herself to phenomenal fantasy books, zip lining across jungles, snorkeling in underwater caverns, pole dancing, or traveling the world. She believes that life should be lived to the fullest and encourages others to follow their dreams and passions so they can see just what they are capable of.
Bloodletter reminded me a bit of an early serious Bones episode, minus the super nerdy forensic bits and David Boreanaz. It had a fast pace, lots of twists and turns to keep me guessing and a handful of lead characters with a good dynamic but who could use a bit more development.
Kelly Garrett is a criminologist. She and her team are investigating a series of gory murders where the killer appears to be toying with them. On each victim the killer hides a “clue” in the form of a commandment of his own making. In addition to this high profile case, Kelly is also receiving troubling phone calls, dealing with fiancé troubles and experiencing flashbacks to her own troubled past. Poor Kelly has a lot on her plate and the reader gets to know her pretty well during all of this turmoil. The same can’t be said for many of the secondary characters who show up either as victim, potential suspect or friend, take up a bit of face time, but either aren’t overly important to the story or aren’t fully realized. If a few of these characters had been omitted and more time spent on the core characters I may have felt differently. As written though, the book felt like a whirlwind of characters and I had to take notes to remember who was who because my pea brain could just not keep up.
The book speeds along at a good clip and never slows down. It has a decent amount of blood splatter and gore but doesn’t go over the top. I enjoyed being kept guessing and was surprised by the reveal at the end but after thinking about it realized the author threw in a slew of clues along the way, I was just too dense to put it all together. I’d definitely give this author another shot and wouldn’t mind following Kelly and her team as they track down more criminals.
Kelly, Nina and Chad are criminalists with the Nakeita police department. The book opens with them looking for clues around the body of a young woman who has been sexually assaulted and murdered. While still trying to find the assailant/murderer, they are called to another case – this one a very strange murder. A young woman, owner of a daycare center, has been viciously murdered and dismembered. Among the clues left at the scene is the commandment “Thou shalt not kill”; written in the victim’s blood. This is the first murder, but it won’t be the last – and as each scene is explored, another message comes to light.
To increase the tension, Kelly begins to receive disturbing phone calls from a menacing-voiced man, telling her she should be careful, and that he is watching her. Between the calls and the murder cases, Kelly’s tension rises, and she begins to have flashbacks to a frightening event from her childhood, where she was beaten almost to death – a memory she had suppressed for 20 years. Will she be able to work through the stress and discover who the Bloodletter is?
I’ll say one thing for this story – it kept me guessing, and I was taken completely by surprise by the dénouement. There are a lot of twists and turns thrown in, and the pace is relentless. There are a lot of red herrings salted throughout the story as well, which will keep even the most seasoned crime solver uncertain. The reason it lost a star was that the author tried to fit in too much within too little, if that makes sense – there are lots of characters, and she tries to give the reader some insight into each of them … whether it really fits into the story or not. If the book were expanded, and some of the subplots given more room to breathe, it would have worked better. Or, alternately, just skip some of them – there were a couple that really didn’t add much to the story except to give us some insight into what ended up being a fairly minor character or two.
But I did enjoy the story overall, and fans of thrillers and suspense novels should find something to enjoy in this story as well.
Are you brushed up on the Ten Commandments? No? After this book you will be, and you might be finding yourself trying to obey them a little more than before… Kelly Garret is a criminalist. She spends her days delving into the minds of the cities most wanted. But then, she meets the mind that is more horrific than anything she has ever seen. A rash of brutal and bloody murders rock the city leaving Kelly and her team to try and decipher the clues the killer has left behind. As the body count begins to mount, a series of chilling phone calls and the sudden occurrence of buried memories leaves Kelly wondering if perhaps, this time, delving into the mind of the vile might be her undoing. Check the locks on your windows and your doors…if you are out alone at night, definitely look over your shoulder because you never know who is stalking the shadows…crouching…waiting… They deliver death. Your death. Are you afraid of the Grim Reaper? You should be. I know I am…someone hold me…I’m scared. Bloodletter is a chilling story that sucks the reader right into a town being rocked with a serial killer. The cast of characters leave you wondering just who you can trust…and who you can’t. As I was reading I looked for the hidden message behind everyone’s words and actions. This book is creepy with a capital ‘C’. The deeds that the sicko in this book commit are heinous, and I found myself marveling at what could possibly twist someone into such a monster. The descriptions in this book of the crime scenes and the autopsies were clear and painted a picture of the horror the victim must have endured before death. It was a complex story woven with a cast of characters that all seemed to have something about them that made you wonder if they were the killer. Kelly is the main protagonist and a criminalist, the daughter of a retired Chief of Police. She’s good at her job and in my opinion must have a stomach made of steel. She has it all: good looks, a great job, great friends, and a newly, sparkly diamond ring on her finger gifted by her hot fiancé. She was a good character – one that seemed to remain innocent despite the job she held. She didn’t seem jaded or hardened in the least by the things that she experienced on a daily basis. Ryan, the resident creep-o was an interesting read. The way he thought was intriguing, and I liked reading from a perspective that I myself never experienced. He was clearly jaded and had his own issues…I often wondered about his childhood. The way he seemed to blend into the crowd and was carefully controlled about his actions almost made me wonder how many people are like this out in the world and how close they could be without a person even realizing it. Bloodletter has a lot of fabulous points. It draws the reader right in and it hits the ground running, holding the reader’s attention well into the book. The story line was clearly well thought out and original. It held just the right amount of thriller and mystery and left out just enough so that you could never figure out ‘who dun it’. The book is written in third person and sometimes I felt that it switched to too many characters, and I wished it would have stayed more with Kelly. I think that perhaps the characterization of the characters could have been developed a bit more in some places. I would have liked to get to know Chad better, and maybe see the relationship between him and Kelly develop earlier on in the book. Also, at times, Kelly seemed a little to naïve to me; I wondered why she didn’t see more than she did. Ryan was also a character I would’ve loved to more about at the end of the book…what happens with him? Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I haven’t read a thriller/murder mystery that got me so involved in quite a while. I couldn’t wait to figure out who did it! If you like creepy books or reading into the mind of a killer than this book is for you! Angel Haze is a talented writer that puts a story together quite well, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next!
Thou shalt not kill.A contradictory message written in blood at the scene of a young woman's murder. Within days, another body surfaces with a similar calling card and, to Detective Ramon Faust and Criminalist Kelly Garret, it's clear a deadly game is underfoot.
As the rash of horrific crimes continue, a phone call unearths a shocking revelation: Nakeita isn't the first city the elusive killer has left his mark. The Bloodletter, as dubbed by the media, has played his deadly game before.
Delving deep into the most terrifying case of Kelly's career, threatening phone calls and flashbacks of a forgotten near-death experience challenge her sanity and the lives of everyone she loves.
My Thoughts:
Well first off I have to say if you ever wanted to know the Ten Commandments, when you are done this book you absolutely will. Now weither or not you believe in them or not is your choice, but after reading Bloodletter I think you will find yourself wanting to follow them more if you don't already. Espicially if you believe even just a little bit in the Grim Reaper.
Kelly Garret is a criminalist and the daughter of a retired Chief of Police. I really liked Kelly's character, she is a stronger well put together lady, she is pretty, loves her job, has some great friends, and her gourgeous fiance just gave her a beautiful diamond ring. On a daily basis Kelly's job has her trying to get inside the minds of the criminals most wanted in her city. Until she one case sets him/her apart from the rest of the worst criminals she has thought she has already seen. This is by far anything more horrific and gruesome than she has seen so far in her career. Now it is up to Kelly and her team to try to figure out who or what is commiting these bloody and very brutal murders, and try to piece together the clues left behind by a rutheless killer. Not only does Kelly have to try to figure out who/what is the killer, when the distrubing phone calls start, the killer tells her she is being watched and she needs to be careful.
I can't tell you anymore without giving spoilers and this is such a great book I don't want to do that. All will be revealed when you read it and yes this book is a total must read. I have to say I don't usually go outside of my comfort zone when it comes to a good murder mystery, I usually like to read Dean Koontz or Stephen King and even a good John Saul at times, but lately I have been stepping outside and expanding my reading areas and I am sooooo glad I have or I wouldn't have had the chance to read Bloodletter.
If you like chills running down your spine, well lock your windows and doors before sitting down to read this one, because it's gonna scare the hell out of ya!!! Oh and turn on the lights too, I didn't and my black cat came around the corner and well I almost *#$@ my pants LOL. This book will give you the creeps like no other I have read for awhile. Just when you think you have it all figured out, no way you don't, Angel throws twists and turns at you at every turn of the corner, and if you thought you have the killer figured out...you really don't.
I would like to thank Angel for allowing me to read Bloodletter in exchange for my review, I cannot thank you enough Angel this is a book I will recommend to all. I hope you all will pick up your copy......if your brave enough Muahhhh.
Now Angel is allowing me to giveaway a copy of her book Bloodletter an ebook, so for one of you brave souls enter now for your chance to have the Bjesus scared out of you. Are you brave enough????????
Imagine having to pay up for your abominable sins while still breathing, clinging to a shred of hope. That’s a bad enough thought, but now envision your mad-as-hell punisher is the Grim Reaper...mercy is nowhere to be found. For the unfortunate victims in “Bloodletter,” by Angel Haze, the last seconds of their lives must have stretched into anguish filled, insanely painful moments of monumental regret. It’s been said there are things worse than death, and meeting Haze’s Reaper is a prime example.
“Bloodletter” takes criminalists Kelly Garret, Nina Brandt, and Chad Evans into serial killer territory where the bone-chilling secrets of the past and present collide. Secrets abound in this suspenseful, sometimes gruesome, novel providing depth to the super interesting characters, plus they keep the reader guessing because many characters in this book have the potential to be murderous. The story begins with a rape/homicide, more dead bodies follow, each one directly relating to the victim’s sins, and then even more tension explodes within the plot as Kelly gets the creeps big time from a stalker. Clues that relate to the Ten Commandants, graphic descriptions of the horrific crime scenes, traumatic childhood memories, lies, dangerous liaisons, and jealousy rears its ugly head as the criminalists wade through blood and body parts to capture the killer.
The nature of good and evil, how physical and mental pain can impede one’s potential, the validity of first impressions, and even how the trust between longtime friends can be nothing more than a twisted façade are all addressed with marvelous details. Kelly’s past is explored to show even though she is a strong, confident woman, demons from her past are alive and well...and seeking to destroy her. It’s shocking to find out her secrets, but when those are revealed, everything in “Bloodletter” falls in place.
Dr. Daniel Willmar, a renowned therapist, fascinated me because it was hard to tell if he really meant what he said, and what he expressed was frightening. No way would anyone be able to convince this man he was wrong about anything or anyone. His unforgiving opinions made me wonder why he was so cynical about mankind, yet he loved to throw extravagant parties. Ryan Keegan, a character with a bizarre persona, added a lot to the dark atmosphere of the story, but more of him would’ve been great. Haze has quite a few characters in this book, like Chad Evans...so hopelessly in love with the girl of his dreams, and Detective Ramon Faust, who finally started to let his guard down toward the end. Yes! I could have stayed in this eerie realm a bit longer just to see what made these characters tick.
If you’re into CSI, Law and Order, Bones, and couldn’t put down “Silence of the Lambs” by Thomas Harris, then Kelly Garret and her team may kidnap your imagination and take it for a wild ride into the land of murder and mayhem until the last page sets you free. I’m looking forward to reading more from Angel Haze!
Kelly Garret, Bloodletter's primary protagonist, is a criminalist living and working in the town of Nakeita. She seems to have it all= a great job, awesome friends, a loving boyfriend... until she realizes that her current case is starting to hit a little too close to home.
There is a serial killer out there that is using the Ten Commandments as an excuse to brutally murder those who don't uphold them, or at least the version of them that the killer has created. Kelly and her team are forced to go into overdrive in search of this sadistic killer, all the while Kelly is battling flashbacks from her childhood. What really happened to her as a child? Did her mother really die in a car accident? What about this case is making her relive what was once forgotten?
Bloodletter is a chilling murder mystery that has you guessing until the very end. Written in third person, there were perhaps too many characters to keep up with in the beginning, but they eventually evened out towards the middle of the novel. There is a distinct beginning, middle and end however, at times, I didn't feel that the plot flowed properly; it was a slippery slope, balancing Kelly's flashbacks, random comments from her father (that I later realized weren't so random after all), and the serial murder case that she and her co-workers were trying to solve.
If your're in the mood for a good thriller, with a big creep factor added in, then Angel Haze's Bloodletter is the novel for you! The author did a marvelous job of creating a unique story, with great characters and an ending that definitely through me for a loop!
Haze does a great job creating an exciting, bloody mystery novel that keeps readers engaged and rapidly turning the pages. I found myself constantly trying to figure out the identity of the Grim Reaper, though no matter how close I thought I was, I never pinpointed his/her identity until the big reveal. While there was foreshadowing, Haze does a phenomenal job blindsiding the reader, keeping interest piqued with all the new information as crime after crime is committed, killing off despicable people.
This is one of those novels that revolves around a vigilante who slowly disposes of the rift-raft around town. While those who are killed are revealed to be the worst of the worst, the police are unable to allow someone to take the law into his/her own hands; no one deserves to die under such horrible circumstances. I am always torn with these novels, understanding that the police need to do their job, but also secretly spurring on the killer(s). Yes, there are truly evil people in the world, and yes, they shouldn’t be allowed to wreak havoc on the innocent, but no, I can’t condone murdering them in such ghastly ways as the Grim Reaper does, even though I think such evil people should be severely punished. Being locked up forever, though… well, that’s something I think they definitely deserve.
But moving past personal philosophy, I must say that Haze writes a great CSI style novel that will keep readers guessing and intrigued from start to finish. The immense characterization was great, and though I didn’t connect with all the characters (and that’s a good thing), I think they were portrayed expertly.
Vivid crime scenes, gripping suspense, and childhood drama all come together to create "Bloodletter."
Come follow three skilled criminalists as they work with the police force to try to end the killing spree that seems to be running rampant through their town. Beginning with a rape and homicide, and moving to several gruesome murders, these three are baffled by the lack of evidence to figure out any suspects. Kelly, it seems has even more to contend with in spite of all this on her job. She must deal with flashbacks from her own past as she sees more and more on these cases, plus deal with some nut who keeps stalking her by phone and telling her little tidbits that no one technically should know about. She continues day after day trying to put the pieces together until it all finally comes out in a super surprising ending that she couldn't even see coming.
This is so much CSI come to life on the pages of a book. I thought it seemed pretty long, but the more you get into it, the more you want. The vivid crimes scenes were very well-written as long you enjoy that kind of thing, so do be prepared. I do enjoy watching CSI on TV, so I did enjoy this story. The author did a great job at keeping you in suspense and wondering the whole book through. It had a great ending, but you definitely didn't see it coming.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mystery-combined, contemporary thriller. Definitely consider picking up your copy today!
This book was kindly provided to me by it's wonderful author for my honest review.
Angel sent me this book to review and I have to say I am glad because I really enjoyed this book.
As a fan of Criminal Minds and C.S.I this book had the analisis of the criminal behaviour and the lab parts.
The main protagonist is Kelly Garret a criminalist in the town of Nakeita, she's a good cop and is the daughter of one. At first Kelly seems to have a perfect life: good friends, a good job and the man of her dreams, but these killings will dig up pieces of her past long forgotten.
The best friend is Chad, a cute and professional fellow policeman and Kelly's childhood friend.
The bad guy, is of course the killer, but just maybe there might be more than catches the eye.
The best part of this book is that allthough you can guess who the killer is, you always have a few options and it's not until the last couple of chapters that you actually confirm who it is.
The relationships in between the characters was well written and while sometime tragic other times it was also funny.
I love the cover of the book as it gives you an idea of what you will find inside.
As for the ending, well I think it was open so there's a distinct possibility that we might here more from Kelly and her friends in the future. I hope so :)
So thank you Angel for giving me the opportunity to read your book and I'll keep an eye out for your new books :)
This book will have you on the edge of your seat as the author takes you deeper and deeper into a chilling story that is not like any other! in the town of Nakeita theres a serial killer known as the "Bloodletter" on the loose who will make you think twice before committing sins that are in the Ten Commandments and its up to Kelly, Chad & Nina who are criminalists to try and figure out the clues left on the victims and to stop the killings before another victim is claimed... can they figure out who is behind these gruesome killings in time? Hang on for the ride of your life because you WILL NOT believe the ending!!!!
Watching this through many eyes makes it so exciting to try to figure out who is the murderer. There are so many suspects that fit into the guilty category that it keeps you guessing from the first murder. This fast paced game of cat and mouse is inventive and imaginative with very vivid scenes sketched out for you.
I was really intrigued to figure out how all the things linked together and who was responsible for the devastating and cruel manner in which some were taken. I was in the dark up until the end and loved every minute of it. Great book.
