A young woman with Down's syndrome presents an intimate account, in poetry, of her growth toward independence, focusing on her job as a bus girl in a restaurant and the sense of purpose she gained from it. Original. IP.
I picked this up at Woodbury Library last week for potential use at school. After reading the poems, I found out that Gretchen Josephson is a Denver-area poet, born in the 50's with Down's Syndrome. I would be lying if I said that I didn't start the collection over again with a new lens. I did. This woman was (is) talented (after Googling her I found out that she has Alzheimer's Disease [http://www.alifeguide.com/a-sisters-j...], which was pretty upsetting) and lived a very interesting life and turned her experiences into art. I am pretty cynical about a lot of things, but Josephson's poetry hit me pretty hard. It allowed me to see the world through her eyes, and she is about as inspirational and heroic as they come. Essential reading.
