From SIMPLICITY, one of the most famous names in sewing, comes a comprehensive guide to all things fabric and fiber related. Lavishly illustrated throughout with color and archival photographs of fabrics and fabric-related items, this is the essential tome for textile fans everywhere. It covers fabric basics, natural and man-made fibers, fabric types, specialty finishes, trademark fabrics, more!
Yes, I am THAT sewing nerd who will give 5 stars to a book that spends 175 pages discussing fabrics. It did give me some great ideas on what to use to line my old black coat, how to true up the edge of fabric that is cut crooked, and even how different fabrics are made. The one thing it didn't answer for me though is how to place my skirt pattern on an obvious directional fabric without the pattern beginning to run vertical on the side rather than horizontal. Perhaps I just need a different pattern that is made up of multiple panels for the skirt rather than just a couple of large ones.
I saw this on the library shelves, and on a whim, I took it home with me. If I were at all interested in fashion, sewing, making my own clothes, or anything like that, I think I would have bought a copy of this book. It's a great primer on how to deal with fabric of all sorts, as well as thread etc. I'm not sure what the fabric reference market is like, but I liked this book. If it came in Chinese, I would probably have bought one for my mother, who likes to sew, made all clothes for her four children, and unfortunately reads Chinese instead of English.
