The New Heroes/Quantum Prophecy #5

The Ascension: A Super Human Clash

Rate this book
They'd done it. Not only had Roz, Abby, Lance, and Thunder survived their first battle with a super villain, they'd defeated him. Krodin was dead, and they had saved the world. Now everything could go back to normal-good old, boring normal. School. Parents. Friends. But three weeks later, the world suddenly changes. The United States is under martial law, the people are little more than drones, and where Central Park should be there now stands a massive glass-and-steel building, home to the all-powerful Chancellor. In Michael Carroll's follow-up to the acclaimed Super Human, the world has been remade in the Chancellor's image, and it's about to get much much worse. Only this young band of heroes has a chance of stopping him, but can they return the world to what it was, or will they be stranded in this alternate world forever?

This book was almost as good as the first, with a great plot twist having to deal with time travel, which I liked.

The Ascension
Micheal Carroll

Lance is flying home with Paragon and he sees police cars surround his house. He immediately gets scared of what happened. He wants to land immediately. He lands with Paragon and rushes inside the house, but then gets stopped by the officer. He then sees a stretcher carrying a dead body covered in a bag. He later finds out that his whole family was killed. Slaughter had snapped their necks. 3 months later after Lance had been living secretly so no one could find him he is said to be relocated into a prison. Then he is exactly in another dimension which is the exact same as his but one key thing has changed, the U.S.A.'s chancellor is Krodin. Yes, he died in their realm, but now he is in the United States government.

The books main theme is that you should never give up. Even though Lance's parents are dead, he still wants to help fight Krodin. Roz is a woman that can control steel with super human strength. She Never loses hope in the cause. She isn't a killer but will still do what she has to to get things done. That just proves that you should never give up. Even the bad guy, Krodin won't give up on his dreams of ruling the world.

What it's about: After seemingly destroying the unstoppable tyrant Krodin, young heroes Abby, Lance, Roz, and Thunder try to return to their lives. But things have changed.

Lance's world has been completely turned upside-down, as he no longer has a family. But while the others try to figure out how to move forward with what they've learned about their abilities, something strange happens. Suddenly, all the heroes who fought Krodin experience an odd sensation, and the world changes around them. Suddenly there is surveillance everywhere, people are marching in silent lines down the streets, a paramilitary force seems to be enforcing strict rules.

And the person in charge is Krodin.

As the group tries to find each other and work out what has happened, they find themselves in a race against time. The United States is about to be invaded by a coalition of other nations bent on defeating Krodin. The death toll will be catastrophic if the heroes can't figure out a way to take Krodin down.

But how do you stop someone who is undefeatable?

What I thought: This installment of the series was pretty entertaining. But there was one moment that kind of took me out of the story. Carroll tends to fit the pieces of his puzzles together pretty carefully, and there's this one passage in the book where there's a bit that feels like I skipped a page. I backed up and re-read the section a few times to see if I was missing some detail that would make it more logical, but I couldn't find anything, and it kind of took me out of the story; I spent a good part of the rest of the book keeping one eye peeled for further disjunctions.

I am a bit ambivalent about how Carroll is addressing death and killing in this particular book. There's one death that just seems to come out of nowhere for no particular reason; it's completely unnecessary. And there are several discussions among the characters about whether it's okay to kill for a greater purpose, or even accidentally. I appreciate that several of these teens are not willing to take a life - I think that's a good choice. But to put the characters into literal life-or-death situations and have them react by carefully considering how they need to avoid casualties doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the realism of the story.

The end of this story also sets up another half a dozen possible storylines for future installments, depending on which way Carroll decides to go with things. But it seems like it's going to reintroduce some issues from the last book, if the story continues to unfold in a way that follows a semi-logical path. So I'm curious to see what happens.

Why I rated it like I did: This book had some more obvious flaws that the previous installment. I also realized in looking this book up on Goodreads that there actually seem to be several prequels and at least one sequel. I may try to track them down to see where things start and where they went from here.

My book that I read is part of the series “ A Super Human” It’s the second book called “The Ascension”. The Author that wrote “ The Ascension” is Michael Carroll. I really do love this book
It one of the books that hook you in to reading it. The only complain That i have with this book Is That it a different character book which means that it will change it point of view to the other person and that will leave you with a hook. Which drives me crazy. Michael writes so good it makes you feel like you are a part of the book. The themes of this book is good vs evil, Courage and heroism, and so much more. My favorite character is Abby why cause she a firecracker and she is so invested to help others, also I love how she talks to herself. My favorite quote from Abby is when she is talking to herself self and it relates to how I talk to myself and it goes something like this “Stupid, stupid, stupid! I shouldn’t have snapped the cable. Cord was right: That just told them where I was”(109). I like that because it shows that she make mistakes and that this character can relate to others and that why in this book I like Abby. One of my favorite quotes from the book was when lance had to calm down Abby so it goes like this. “You!” Abby screamed, pushed between Rob and Cord “Slaughter!” Lance grabbed her wrapped his arms tightly around her. “It not her, Abby. This woman just is …..She’s not Slaughter.” I like that because she was going flight this woman cause she knew that she thought that it was the person that killed lance family. This is why I love this book why cause It a cool adventure it has lots of hooks and it make you feel like your apart of it.

I loved the second book in the superhuman series! It kept the same characters and further fleshed out their personalities and character. The beginning was slow, but the middle and end were spectacular, but the end left me slightly confused, but excited to read the last book in the trilogy at the same time.

This book was relatively boring honestly. This might have been because I accidentally read the third one already. Even so, I think everyone should read this to get to the third book because I enjoyed that one more. This book was somewhat predictable and the only "plot twist" wasn't built up to well and was barely explained. So, now go and read.

2.5/5 and that’s generous! this book was not even close to its predecessors. Carroll’s great with beginnings and ends, but the middle fluff in this one was all one dimensional dialogue. TERRIBLE! Characters don’t grow to ANYTHING! Idk if I’ve been nostalgia blind to the rest but i’m hoping the next one is better.

"The Ascension: A Super Human Clash" by Michael Carroll is the continuation of a series of books. This book takes place after the actions on his other book "Super Human." Although it is a good book, it did not live up to my expectations. Having sent Krodin back in time instead of actually killing him, has caused him to cause an alternate reality. In this reality, America is way more high tech and krodin is the leader. It is once again up to Paragon, Abby, Lance, Roz, Max, and James/Thunder to save the day. Some of the main strong points in this book are the amazing amount of description and the constant action.

...

Going even back to "Super Human," Michael Carroll shows that he knows how to fully explain any situation, person, or even inanimate object that appears in one of his books. Throughout The ascension, there is much new terrain and many new objects that have to be explained. Things such as the hovercrafts that roam the street and the way that people walk in single file down streets like they are lifeless. This description gives people a better understanding of what the environment is like and how it is so much different from what it used to be.

...

Going deeper into the category, The ascension shows many fighting scenes. These fighting scenes are well written and actually capture the attention of the people that are reading it. What makes them so good is the way that you can imagine what is happening in your head based on just what you read. There is no need to stop and think about what it may have looked like because when the book explains the joints in someones arm bending to do an attack, or someones hand reaching back swiftly to grab an arrow, there is no more description needed.

...

All together, "The ascension:A Super Human Clash" is a good book, but I do not think that it matches up the the quality of "Super Human." It follows the same formula as superhuman with its writing and description, but misses more of the quirkiness from the original. I would recommend this book to anyone who actually likes action books or someone who is interested in a more descriptive read.

Probably the best installment in the series since the 2nd book. Story telling was cool and it was nice seeing some sort of character development. This one seems like the optimization of the author’s formula and it won’t get lost in the crowd. Only reason it isn’t a 5 for me is because there isn’t really anything new.

They thought Krodin was gone. Burned up by Pyrokine's ultimate sacrifice. But then reality shifts and nothing is the same anymore. The United States is under martial law---and has been for years. And Krodin is somehow in charge. Lance, Abby, and the rest of the superhumans need to unravel this mystery fast, and figure out how to put down Krodin for good.

I couldn't make it through this one, due to the extreme totalitarian government going on, that looked like it was going to be in place throughout the book. I don't like dystopias. And I couldn't buy the timeframe (only five years?) and the sheer number of people who were quietly submitting without secretly rebelling. It was more, this America? Five years? And Krodin wouldn't have time to go after everyone himself, which means his plans should've been more open to sabotage. Which is why I dislike dystopias---I start thinking of all the ways it would fall apart before it got that bad, or all the ways such a "total" hold is really very fragile, because people don't like falling in line, especially not in a country where everyone involved would be able to remember something better.

Also, bringing Krodin back felt like cheating. I would've much preferred a new villain. Krodin's abilities just don't make him much fun to fight, either, since basically nothing is effective, which means even people with superpowers are going to need some deus ex machina rather than being able to work up to it with their own abilities.

So. I made it far enough in to tell I was disliking the experience and quit. I rate this book Neutral.

This is not a perfect book but I give it my five stars because it is a book that is right up my alley. I really enjoyed the first book and would've hated it to be a standalone. I was so excited to see that there was a second that I bought it, the third and the forth all together to save me time chasing them down later.
This one continues the adventure from book one. It takes place only a few weeks later and the heroes are still recovering. Abbey is testing her limits with the help of Paragon, Roz and Max are getting back to business, Thunder is focusing on civilian life with the family and no one has seen Lance since they fought Krodin and he was placed in protective custody.
Brawn comes back and gets a great moment to shine. Thunder has to learn really quickly what his power can actually do. Even Slaughter returns but in a really enjoyable way that I hope gets flushed out later. My one real unanswered question involves her and a kind of "how did she become bad then?"
Long story short, I like Superheroes. This series and this book are fun for me. Could you find better somewhere else? Sure but I don't want to. I like these characters and I'll continue to follow their story.

These have grown on me. I like the characters a lot. They get a little violent--people killed in cold blood or for revenge, but it's not the focus...it's just realistic in fitting with the theme of teen superheroes (and thus their families) being inappropriately thrust into desperate situations because of their powers, and also being used and/or abused by the powers that be. So the 4 stars is partially from the enjoyment I'm getting from my investment in the characters. This is not quite as good as Superhuman.

This is a time travel/alternate reality book, and their is one aspect that I LOVED in the story. I loved the completely different roles and even personality development that some major characters displayed in the alternate reality, while other characters' core strengths/FLAWS stay the same (Max!), and what the change or non-change indicates about the character. The end little deal with Max is so quick that I missed it the first time through despite being confused by the exchange. As I thought about it, I realized it was the exact same as the end of Superhuman and got both awed and mad.

I think I read that these are prequels to the first three Quantum Prophecy books, which kind of makes sense with Josh Dalton's age. I remember him, but forget exactly what was the deal with Max in those...

But the cliffhanger in #3 is still then very much unresolved. I'll have to keep reading and see if the confusing chronology gets sorted out.

The book the ascension by Michael Carroll is a great book. This book was one of the few book that keep me entertain the whole time I read it. The book is about a group of superhuman who not too long ago save the world from Krodin. Krodin was the first superhuman from the past who a group of people who thought that he was god. Then a group of superhuman fought him and thought they kill him but he since him back in time and Krodin took over the USA in a matter of 6 year and was close to take over the world. At first the group of superhuman were pull out of their time zone and put in this one. Not having a clue to what happen the superhuman have to find each other and take Kordin down before he take over the world. Some of the bad guys from the past will turn to good guys to help defeat Kordin. Also in this time zone there more technology in this time zone because Kordin turn a really smart in to a superhuman. So now they have hover cars and a teleported. The other country came together to form a big group in order to stop Kordin and the USA from taking over the world. I think that the author wrote this book to entertain people. I think that this book excel in this part I could not put the book down. There five other books and I already read one more in a matter of days and I start on another book already. These books were one of the only books I truly like.

As a comic book geek who reads a lot of YA, this was a book that I was obviously going to read. I liked Carroll's preceding "Quantum Prophesy" trilogy a lot. I was less sold on the first title in this trilogy (Super Human). I do like the design of the ancient Assyrian "villain" brought to our time, Krodin...he is very demigod-y.

This book could definitely have been slimmmed down by about fifty pages, with the streamlining of one of the numerous parallel plots. I did appreciate the way that the young hero Thunder's power (sound wave control) was developed, making him a serious threat, where he was previously kind of a support player. The ulimate handling of the story's "big bad" was also fairly clever.

It can be so hard to find accessible YA books for boys, so I am always on the lookout for titles to recommend to my buddy the school librarian, and this book fits the bill for superhero loving dudes (And dudettes). I know several students who will dig this series. But, if you're not into the genre, I'd skip it.

The Ascension by Michael Carroll is a book of deep philosophical thinking. Though on the outside, it may seem to be a fictional story of an epical adventure of 4 characters, which once again was thrown together after an unexpected turn of events. Now Roz, Abby, Thunder, and Lance have to once again face their enemy Krodin, in a completely new world, with new friends, and new enemies. They will face hardships along their journey, and their friendships will be tested to its limits.
This book is the sequel to Super Human, but I believe that this book is simply more fascinating, because it further explores the concept of being a superhuman, and the responsibilities that the power brings. “We’re all superhuman and we can’t help that, but we do have a choice as to whether we’re heroes or villains. People are going to try to make you into a bad guy because of how you look, but don’t let them. “ (p.264) So I highly recommend this book, because of its examination of human nature, and the concepts of being a hero, or a villain.

This books are easy to read, I'll give them that. I just don't have the energy or feel the need to write a long review for this book. It was basically the same events as the first books. Oh no we have to stop Krodin! Then they only end up stopping him for a short time. I did appreciate how you can see the characters growing and their powers growing. In all honesty, the thing that has me the most intrigued is Abby's secret. She's told Lance what it is, and I had a guess, but someone who has read all the books said I was wrong so I really have no idea. I'm kind of semi in love with Solomon Cord so there's that. I think Abby and Thunder would be adorable together as well. I'm not really looking forward to the next book which is all about Brawn mostly because I just don't see how it will fit into the timeline, but I'll read it because I can't stop now. I'm really just reading for Abby, Thunder, and Cord, and to see if Max ever stops being a giant jerk. Overall good book. Reads almost like a comic book but with book length and detail.

The second Super Human novel from Carroll sees the return of Krodin and the teen superhero team. After Krodin's defeat, Lance, Paragon, Roz, and the rest of the teens expect life to resume normally. However, a greay cloud soon envelopes them, and they all awaken in an alternate world, where Krodin is in charge of national security, where martial law is in full effect, and most super humans have been killed. As the interlopers attempt to defeat the Chancellor, they will learn each other's true identities and weaknesses in a desperate battle to defeat an unstoppable villain. Carroll's world building has drastically improved, and the super human team seems much more at ease with each other in this sophomore work. Lance and Roz are especially well done, and the futuristic technology smacks right against the necessary suspension of disbelief. An excellent ending leaves readers at peace but also open to additional narratives. - CS

Another good actioney book. It has the same problems as the first, eg. Stupid decisions moving on the plot. And added into the mix is a theme that seems to be getting pretty common these days: jerk characters that are so unlikable that they distract you from the story. Really don't get that.

The bad aside, this is still a ton of fun to read. The author is extremely creative with the superpowers and especially with his solutions to when I think normal writers would say they have written themselves into a wall. And Lance and Brawn? Yes please. Can we just get books about them? And can the other characters start listening to them since they seem to be more intelligent than all the others combined?

A nifty thing the author did was show his research. His alternate reality really rang true. Kind of scary actually.

If you haven't read Super Human yet, do that first. If so, you are in for a superhuman treat. If you have read the book and enjoyed the fast-paced superhuman action, then you will love Ascension even more. The characters are all back for some reality bending adventure against over-whelming odds. The plot structure is rather similar because the characters are all split up (again) and this leaves us jumping from one member or a duo and then back again. There isn't anything deep, but it is good popcorn fun, and you're left thinking if only the producers and writers of the show Heroes had given Michael Carroll a call, then we would have been in for a long-running mega-hit. Perhaps Carroll's books aren't featured in many lists of the best superhuman fiction because it is labelled YA, but they should be on every list. They certainly are on mine.

The book "The Ascension: A Super Human Clash" was a great book which fell perfectly in line with the first. There are very few sequels books that are better than the original book and this is one of them. In this book you follow the same hero's but they some how have altered time when they thought they killed the fifth king. he was sent back five to six years in the past and was able to rise to power and is waging a war on the world. The fifth king was able to get rid of most of the super humans by putting them all in one place and blowing them up with a col-bolt bomb and blaming it on one of the last super villains. This book (like that last) was a great read and I couldn't put the book down. The writing style was amazing and the way the suspense would build kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I Rate this book 10/10 for making me feel my emotions while I read.

This was the best book I read so far. it has so much action and adventure. every chapter had me on the edge of my seat. when I first picked the book up i couldn't put it down. i am in love with book.

I have never would have thought that little lance would rise up and become his own super hero. this book has thought me that you don't need super powers to defeat a villain. it has opened my eyes to see that police officer and firefighters are all super heroes in their own unique way. this is what made me fall in love with this book. the only book i ever read that i can get a clear message from.

I cant forget about the only super villain i like krodin. he is the best at what he does and is power is amazing. the man has concurred nations with out breaking a sweat . this book just has it all with the characters i creates. so you should read this book it is the best book ever.

What happened in this book is. after Roz,Lance,Thunder, and Abby have stopped Krodin they think everything should go back to normal, but it did they actually just sent krodin back in time and he changed everything. in there new world krodin has taken over america and he is the chancelor. krodin has a plann and he wants to take over the world so Roz,Lance,Thunder, and Abby have to make a plan to stop krodin for good. but this time they have the help from the other super humans because there is no plauge.
The reason i gave this book a 5 star rating is. It is a very action packed book and it had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. i feel like this book would be a good read for anyone from the ages 9-19. i would recomend this book to anyone because i thought it was a very good book and i think other people will think the same thing.

the showdown at the end of the first book caused a parallel universe to come about. Krodin is Chancellor and the U.S. is separated from the rest of the world. the super powered teenagers from Super Humans have their conscious minds transported into this parallel world with knowledge of Krodin that no one else holds. They are set and ready to take him down again and their are even cooler technologies to help them. Identities are revealed and even annoying Lance can be the hero in this thrilling second book of the Super Human series.

re-read: Super Human was more of an origin story for our young superheroes. Ascension is a questioning story. What makes a bad guy/ an evil guy? Is forgiveness truly possible? what makes a super hero? Does Lance count/should he? Questions must be asked and an 'evil' must be overcome. Is Krodin the 'big bad' here or is there someone worse else out there?

I thought this was an awesome, realistic superhero novel. I actually give it a 3.8 only because it was not the best book in the series. Other than that it was incredible! I am really starting to like Lance as a character. Smart , witty and clever to the point of extreme. I am liking Roz as well just because she doesn't trust her brother. Really no one should.
I know that this series is probably going to end tragically, but I hope with all my being it doesn't. (Even though it will.)

What?! I continually love this series! The action was great, storyline was interesting enough, and the characters were phenomenal. It was great to see the alternate world. I like how even they didn't know why Krodin was sent back six years and how they were different from it all. Sometimes there doesn't need to be an explanation. Especially with time travel. It's all just a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey-whimey stuff anyway. The only thing is...if you can send Krodin anywhere, why not send him to the Sun or Jupiter or even Neptune! Why send him next door to Mars?! But oh well. Overall, wonderful book. Excited to continue the series.

The second book in the Super Human series, this one exceeds the first. Without having to dedicate much time to expose, the pace is more brisk and the action is plentiful. The story incorporates elements of time travel, and the impacts of the events that ended the first book, which help make the setting and storyline convincing, for a fantasy story. Again, each of the characters in the diverse group of heroes has their chance to shine none of them particularly saving the day, but each contributing in their own way. My 12 year old loved this series, and I can see why. My eight year old will probably feel the same when he reads them.

I read the first one in this series and I liked it. This second book in the series is just not very good. The narrative whips back and forth between so many different characters (and realities) that you begin not to care whether or not characters are good or bad; you just want them to stay on the page long enough to develop a full thought about what they may or may not be doing. And, frankly, you don't really know which reality is the desirable reality, so you just keep reading hoping in the end it will make sense.

This was an anjoyable book to read and I had fun reading it. The book is very odd in the beginning due to how the book is set in another demension, and the beginning transfers between the two. The rest of the book is very good, and though it may seem imposible it has a good ending, it is one of few book endings that I was happy with, especially if you read the magazine clip in the end of the book. I highly recommend this book to people who read and enjoyed the first book in the series, Super Human.
