A skeptical and wealthy security expert and former cop turns to a sexy psychic with a shady past to solve a cold case Adirondack mystery, where they face off against the ghosts of an old house with a dark past, a maniacal killer who'll do anything to stay hidden, and their own lethal and unplanned attraction. Ex-cop turned private security consultant Sam Tyler made a deathbed promise to uncover the truth behind the murder of his friend’s wife at a remote Adirondack lodge, and his sense of duty won’t let him fail. Sam fast concludes the case is at a dead end, a restless ghost plagues the old house, and despite his wealth and skills, he has no way of figuring out who killed his friend's wife. Out of options, he realizes his only hope of making good on that promise is Emma Bishop, a psychic with a shady past. Rubbing elbows with the spirit world and sexy Emma makes him see her less as less as an enemy, and a means to an end and more a threat to his heart and his resolve. Psychic Emma Bishop grew up in a family full of grifters where the ‘sight’ ran hand and hand with the long and short con. At eighteen she broke free and went legit, using her psychic skills to solve cold case crimes. Falling for her employer and throwing herself into an affair with the wealthy man is not an option and yet she can’t resist his powerful charm. As the cold case Adirondack mystery deepens, and her attraction to Sam becomes inescapable, Emma realizes she’s way in over her head, and her heart will pay the price. The dead demand justice and she can’t turn away, even with a murderer drawing a target on her back. As old secrets and fresh bodies turn up, Emma and Sam race against time to bring the truth to light. Neither plans on the attraction they share kicking into overdrive, but when danger and passion heat to the flash point, life, and love are put to the ultimate test.
It was a good story and I liked that the psychic stuff played a large role and was done positively instead of charlatan. I liked the characters but felt the chemistry came on a little strong for having just met; though I do believe in the love at first sight stuff.
Unfortunately, the author made the same mistake many do. After the proofreaders have done their job the author changes some stuff and doesn’t let the proofreaders have another go at it (making changes with tracking on makes it so the proofreader doesn’t have to read the entire story yet again).
Kindle version: only 4% in and already a typo, ‘they’ instead of ‘the’. At 6% ‘you’ instead of ‘you’re’ or ‘you are’. Definitely needed another proofreading (i.e. “I’m dying to ask where you from the skill came from, or how you learned it.”). 40% “Probing it at brought more of the same…” 45% “I don’t know who with the man was, but…” 46% “…and more chances that it a web of lies…” There’s more, but not necessary to show. There were enough typos and extra words thrown in/left out to jar one out of the story.
Nice story. More of a ghost story with a bit of mystery and murder than an actual love story, though there was a little of that thrown in as well.
Emma is a psychic brought in by Sam, an ex cop, to try to figure out who killed his late best friend's wife 5 years prior. The lodge (where the murder took place) is haunted. The ghost angle was a little strange but it came together well. Sam and Emma's relationship was kind of back and forth and was eventually resolved at the end, though I would have liked to have seen more happen in that regard.
I would probably rate this higher had I not figured out way early on who the killer was. There were some surprises thrown in but to me the killer was obvious very early on, though the reasoning behind it was not. Also, there were some major editing issues..... words not where they should have been, sentences that did not quite make sense. It was not enough to detract from the story.
This is my first by this author. I'm sure it will not be my last.
Awesome, twists and turns everywhere in this story. The underlying lust between the 2 main characters had me dying to read more! The sexual tension was crazy! Definitely a twist on the "who-done-it" in the murder(s)!!
This was a free Kindle book so I had very few expectations. But I quickly fell in love with the story and the characters. A good ghost story with a touch of romance.
Not a bad story overall..though I did figure out the villain pretty close to the beginning of the book. I have to say, the grammar errors (lose, loose) detracted from the book.
I actually loved how the psychic investigation was an integral part of the book and was well described. Unfortunately the book came across somewhat clinical and definitely needed another edit.
